T: 01554 758171 e:[email protected] | www.stradeyparkhotel.com Mr Ian M. Smith Pastoral Letter Dear Friends, There is a lot of change, a lot of alteration and adjustment going on in our nation, our society, in our culture and the way we look at the world and our impact on our environment. There is a lot of shifting and changes in British and international politics at this present time. Some people find this exciting, some are worried, some try to ignore it, others want to run away from it all and some just let it all wash over them and pass them by, while others like to analyse the behaviour patterns of the different groups involved, hoping to be able to forecast future events from what they learn, from what is happening now and from what has happened before. May you live in interesting times" is an English expression purported to be a translation of a traditional Chinese curse. While seemingly a blessing, the expression is normally used ironically, with the clear implication that "uninteresting times" of peace and tranquillity are more life-enhancing than interesting ones, which, from a historical perspective, usually include disorder and conflict. Despite being so common in English as to be known as the "Chinese curse", the saying is apocryphal, and no actual Chinese source has ever been produced. The most likely connection to Chinese culture may be deduced from analysis of the late-19th-century speeches of Joseph Chamberlain, probably erroneously transmitted and revised through his son Austen Chamberlain. Just like this expression that has come into common usage without people really knowing its’ origins or why it was first written many quotes are taken from the Bible and misused. Many of the stories that we Christians treasure are misquoted and misunderstood in everyday conversations, often totally out of context and often to the detriment of our faith and to ourselves as believers. Not that long ago most people in Britain had a Christian education, even if they were not regular church attenders. Most children had Religious Education taught to them in school and that education was based on the Judaeo-Christian message of the Bible. Sadly, that is not so in 2019, our grandchildren can spend their lives almost entirely unaware of Jesus Christ except maybe as the baby born at Christmas (that’s a strange co-incidence isn’t it!), or they hear the words New & Second-Hand Scooters Bought & Sold inc. Like the child that asked its mother why God would name his Son after a swear word. We cannot assume that the people around us automatically know what we are about and what we are doing when we say that we are “Going to Church”, or that we are praying for someone who is ill, or in a bad situation. We need to help people to understand what it is we do and why we do it. Messy Church is an open and friendly space where people are doing familiar things like drawing, painting, and all types of crafts in order to make things that reflect the stories that we tell. Those stories are always Bible stories, some from the Old Testament, most others from the New Testament. We also sing together, pray together and eat together, just like the first Christians did. It is not what many of you would recognise as “Church” but the church is the people gathered together in worship, not the building and not a set type of service. On the last Sunday of July we made our own change, as we Baptised three people in the sea at Ferryside. The Venerable Denis White played his guitar as we anointed them with oil and then took them down to the water and each of them received new life in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Reverends Will & Heidi were there to support us and the following Sunday they had Worship on the same beach and that event was also well attended. Will & Heidi have been doing good work with a group of young people meeting in their Vicarage each month as well as taking assemblies in the school at Ferryside. St Maelog’s Llandyfaelog has just had a very successful Afternoon Tea which was a great fundraiser as well as very happy social event in the village. There has also been change at St Maelog’s itself with the electrical work being upgraded and the extensive work being carried out on and under the floor. At St Teilo’s New Electric heaters are planned and we hope to have new heaters for St Mary’s Parish Room before the winter comes in. We continue to fundraise for the work on St Mary’s Parish Room. The Friends of St Mary’s have been doing a marvellous job, but much more money needs to be found if we are to get the work done and it really does need doing. If anyone is able to help with fundraising or grant applications, we would be most grateful. So, you see we do live in interesting times, and these interesting times may seem stressful, may seem scary, may seem uncertain, and all that is true to some Renault Clio Kia Sportage New Renault Koleos Dacia Stepway extent but with our Lord on our side all is possible. As Saint Julian of Norwich wrote: “In my folly, before this time I often wondered why, by the great foreseeing wisdom of God, the onset of sin was not prevented: for then, I thought, all should have been well. This impulse [of thought] was much to be avoided, but nevertheless I mourned and sorrowed because of it, without reason and discretion. But Jesus, who in this vision informed me of all that is needed by me, answered with these words and said: It was necessary that there should be sin; but all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.” Amen. Your Priest-in-Charge Trevor St. Mary’s News PCC meeting, 17th July. Main Points Ministry share has increased considerably and it is becoming impossible to balance the books. Finances are a concern. Some preliminary work has been done on the organ. Wonderful fundraising efforts by the Friends towards work on the Parish Room but more is needed. Grants being sought but success is difficult compared with just a few years ago. Electrical testing done in St. Mary’s, Parish Room and St. Teilo. Wall mounted heaters needed for Parish Room and St. Teilo. Bequest money in memory of Mrs Enid Walters is to be used for a new lectern at St. Teilo. Nevin has drawn up a design and oak has been sourced. Hopefully, it will be ready for Harvest and a plaque fixed to acknowledge the bequest. From October 2nd, it is hoped to use the Parish Room, every Wednesday, for a Youth Cafe. A Youth Minister has been funded by the Methodist Church. St. Mary’s is to provide the venue and helpers. We have some volunteers but more are needed. N.B. The evening for the Youth Café has changed to Tuesday. • Upset digestion • Poo eating • Bad breath • Full anal glands • Itchy skin/ears/feet • Weight problems • Tear staining • Body odour • Persistent moulting • Lack of vitality • Fussy eating • Behaviour problems • Stiness • Tooth tartar For the best advice service in the business, call our in-house nutritionists on freephone: 08000800 083 6696 Developed by Veterinary Surgeon BVMS MRCVS www.burnspet.co.uk St Mary’s Church Floodlighting We thank all our sponsors 04/09/19 Loving and cherished memories of a very dear mother and grandmother on the anniversary of her death.
