Stradey Park Hotel & Spa, Llanelli, SA15 4HA. T: 01554 758171 e:[email protected] | www.stradeyparkhotel.com Mr Ian M. Smith Pastoral Letter Dear Friends,

There is a lot of change, a lot of alteration and adjustment going on in our nation, our society, in our culture and the way we look at the world and our impact on our environment. There is a lot of shifting and changes in British and international politics at this present time. Some people find this exciting, some are worried, some try to ignore it, others want to run away from it all and some just let it all wash over them and pass them by, while others like to analyse the behaviour patterns of the different groups involved, hoping to be able to forecast future events from what they learn, from what is happening now and from what has happened before.

May you live in interesting times" is an English expression purported to be a translation of a traditional Chinese curse. While seemingly a blessing, the expression is normally used ironically, with the clear implication that "uninteresting times" of peace and tranquillity are more life-enhancing than interesting ones, which, from a historical perspective, usually include disorder and conflict. Despite being so common in English as to be known as the "Chinese curse", the saying is apocryphal, and no actual Chinese source has ever been produced. The most likely connection to Chinese culture may be deduced from analysis of the late-19th-century speeches of Joseph Chamberlain, probably erroneously transmitted and revised through his son Austen Chamberlain.

Just like this expression that has come into common usage without people really knowing its’ origins or why it was first written many quotes are taken from the Bible and misused. Many of the stories that we Christians treasure are misquoted and misunderstood in everyday conversations, often totally out of context and often to the detriment of our faith and to ourselves as believers. Not that long ago most people in Britain had a Christian education, even if they were not regular church attenders. Most children had Religious Education taught to them in school and that education was based on the Judaeo-Christian message of the Bible. Sadly, that is not so in 2019, our grandchildren can spend their lives almost entirely unaware of Jesus Christ except maybe as the baby born at Christmas (that’s a strange co-incidence isn’t it!), or they hear the words New & Second-Hand Scooters Bought & Sold inc. (est. 2012) used when one of their parents gets angry and it comes out as a curse. Like the child that asked its mother why God would name his Son after a swear word.

We cannot assume that the people around us automatically know what we are about and what we are doing when we say that we are “Going to Church”, or that we are praying for someone who is ill, or in a bad situation. We need to help people to understand what it is we do and why we do it. Messy Church is an open and friendly space where people are doing familiar things like drawing, painting, and all types of crafts in order to make things that reflect the stories that we tell. Those stories are always Bible stories, some from the Old Testament, most others from the New Testament. We also sing together, pray together and eat together, just like the first Christians did. It is not what many of you would recognise as “Church” but the church is the people gathered together in worship, not the building and not a set type of service. On the last Sunday of July we made our own change, as we Baptised three people in the sea at Ferryside. The Venerable Denis White played his guitar as we anointed them with oil and then took them down to the water and each of them received new life in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Reverends Will & Heidi were there to support us and the following Sunday they had Worship on the same beach and that event was also well attended. Will & Heidi have been doing good work with a group of young people meeting in their Vicarage each month as well as taking assemblies in the school at Ferryside.

St Maelog’s Llandyfaelog has just had a very successful Afternoon Tea which was a great fundraiser as well as very happy social event in the village. There has also been change at St Maelog’s itself with the electrical work being upgraded and the extensive work being carried out on and under the floor. At St Teilo’s New Electric heaters are planned and we hope to have new heaters for St Mary’s Parish Room before the winter comes in. We continue to fundraise for the work on St Mary’s Parish Room. The Friends of St Mary’s have been doing a marvellous job, but much more money needs to be found if we are to get the work done and it really does need doing. If anyone is able to help with fundraising or grant applications, we would be most grateful.

So, you see we do live in interesting times, and these interesting times may seem stressful, may seem scary, may seem uncertain, and all that is true to some Renault Clio Kia Sportage

New Renault Koleos Dacia Stepway extent but with our Lord on our side all is possible. As Saint Julian of Norwich wrote: “In my folly, before this time I often wondered why, by the great foreseeing wisdom of God, the onset of sin was not prevented: for then, I thought, all should have been well. This impulse [of thought] was much to be avoided, but nevertheless I mourned and sorrowed because of it, without reason and discretion. But Jesus, who in this vision informed me of all that is needed by me, answered with these words and said: It was necessary that there should be sin; but all shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well.” Amen.

PCC meeting, 17th July. Main Points

Ministry share has increased considerably and it is becoming impossible to balance the books. Finances are a concern.

Some preliminary work has been done on the organ.

Wonderful fundraising efforts by the Friends towards work on the Parish Room but more is needed. Grants being sought but success is difficult compared with just a few years ago.

Electrical testing done in St. Mary’s, Parish Room and St. Teilo. Wall mounted heaters needed for Parish Room and St. Teilo.

Bequest money in memory of Mrs Enid Walters is to be used for a new lectern at St. Teilo. Nevin has drawn up a design and oak has been sourced. Hopefully, it will be ready for Harvest and a plaque fixed to acknowledge the bequest.

From October 2nd, it is hoped to use the Parish Room, every Wednesday, for a Youth Cafe. A Youth Minister has been funded by the Methodist Church. St. Mary’s is to provide the venue and helpers. We have some volunteers but more are needed.

N.B. The evening for the Youth Café has changed to Tuesday. • Upset digestion • Poo eating • Bad breath • Full anal glands • Itchy skin/ears/feet • Weight problems • Tear staining • Body odour • Persistent moulting • Lack of vitality • Fussy eating • Behaviour problems • Sti ness • Tooth tartar

Harvest this year in St. Mary's is a week earlier than usual on Sunday 29th September. We will meet on Saturday 28th September at 10.00am to decorate church. Do come along and help us. Friends of St. Mary

The “Friends” 9th A.G.M. held on Monday 12th August 2019 in the Parish Room was opened with a reading and prayers by the Rev. Trevor. The honorary officers who were re-elected are our chairman Mr. Ieuan Hughes, the treasurer Mr. Brian Lewis, and Christine Hughes Publicity Officer. Mrs. Kath Nicholas offered her services as secretary, and she was duly appointed. C.C. Jeanette Gilasbey has been our acting secretary, providing all the necessary printing work required for our committee meetings and activities, for which we have been eternally grateful in considering the amount of work it also entails in her commitment as our County Councillor. Thankyou Jeanette for your contribution to the “Friends” over the years, very much appreciated. The remaining five executive committee members were re-appointed. We would warmly welcome new additional members to join our committee in facilitating our aims for the benefit of the Church of St. Mary. The chairman reported we have 41 paid up members, mostly non residents of our parish. The treasurer furnished us with copies of the Financial Report, showing us a very healthy balance. The A.G.M. concluded with the Lords' Prayer. The ordinary meeting followed with the chairman commenting on the good response in the sales of the Harvest Raffle Tickets. The Grand Draw will be on the night of the Harvest Supper at the White Lion, Cydweli on Friday, 4th October 2019 at 7.00pm. Our appreciation to all who have donated prizes to this annual event, your support inspires us to fulfil our goal. The meeting closed with the “Grace”. D . E . Messy Church and Sunday School.

July’s Messy church was a very special occasion indeed, with Kieran, Gary and James being baptised in the sea at Ferryside. This was followed by crafts and games, a Rainbow Pinata full of sweets and a delicious bring and share buffet. The enthusiastic singing was led by Dennis Wight and friends; Bible readings from Revd. Heidi and Gaynor. There were at least 150 people joining in this joyous event. What an amazing witness! Sunday school has continued throughout the summer despite me having to go away so often. Thank you to Heidi and Olga and to all the amazing volunteers who make our children’s work possible. We will be holding our next Messy Church on Sunday 29th September. The story is about Jesus welcoming the children - Mark 10: 13-16 and the theme is ‘Listening and learning’. Why not join us fun and worship, all finished off with a meal together. Dee Friends of St. Mary's Church

Would you be interested in becoming a Friend Friends of St. Mary’s are attempting to contact people who have either a connection with the Church or would like to support its work. The minimum annual subscription of £15 Anyone can become a Friend. Kidwelly Senior Citizens

A speedy recovery is wished to any members who are not well at the moment and Happy birthday wishes to those with birthdays this month.

We had quite a full month in July. Thank you to all who donated to our carnival stall. It was a great success and we made £100 for member’s entertainment, which is very much appreciated. We all enjoyed a trip to Abergavenny on a lovely warm day, which always helps to boost our spirits. This year our Summer Buffet changed from lunch to Afternoon Tea with delicious sandwiches, cakes, strawberry and cream scones and trifle, catered for by Heldor of Mynydd Y Garreg. Our entertainment had unfortunately double- booked so Bobbie stepped into the breach by reading some cheeky jokes, always entertaining and everyone had an enjoyable afternoon.

For our August meeting our speaker was Janet Knott, a Queen’s nurse, who spoke to us of nursing through the ages. “In 1859 a Mr. Rathbone of Liverpool employed a Mrs. Robinson to care for his dying wife. After his wife’s death he retained her services so that people who could not afford to pay for nursing could be cared for in their homes. Having good results for home caring, he and Florence Nightingale tried to develop the service but found too few trained nurses. He then set up and paid for a school for nursing which covered the 18 ‘districts’ in Liverpool. This was the beginning of ‘District Nursing’. In 1887 a grant of £70,000 was received from Queen Victoria’s Jubilee Fund and in 1889 a royal charter renamed the institute after her” Janet brought with her some old instruments and medicines she had collected over the years and, after learning what they had been used for, we are glad to be living in modern times! A very interesting and entertaining talk. We gave a donation for Janet’s chosen charity - Cruse Bereavement Care.

We have planned a trip to Aberglasney Gardens and Newcastle Emlyn for 18th September. Our next meeting will be on 4th September, 2pm at the Rugby Club.

Ail Gyfle Second Chance Cancer Appeal

A sponsored bike ride in aid of the above appeal, from Caernarfon Castle to conclude at Cydweli Castle on the afternoon of Sunday 1st September 2019 when the cyclists will be met by members of the committee, the Town Mayor, “Hen fenyw fach Cydweli”, the Press, and possibly S4C. Come and join us to give the riders a good welcome on their arrival at 3.30pm; to be followed with a Pig Roast at the Rugby Club Mynydd-y-Garreg.

Ty-Golau

Although Ty-Golau have been on their summer break, we have not been idle. We have sent letters, posters and flyers to 14 G.P.surgeries and 16 pharmacies within our catchment area informing them of the work being carried out at Ty-Golau. Also, 4 new sessions have been prepared.

At the end of August we plan to deliver a power point presentation to the Mental Health Team at Prince Phillip hospital explaining the work being carried out at Ty-Golau. We haven’t been resting on our laurels, there has been plenty to do and lots to think about. Our 1st session after our break will be on Wednesday 4th September.

Public Surgery County Councillor Jeanette Gilasbey will be holding a public surgery for anyone in the community to come and speak to her with issues that they would like her to address. Hosts for September are Brian and Caryl Morris. Our speaker for July was retired community nurse Janet Knott who displayed instruments and medical equipment used on her rounds in days gone by. Her talk was very interesting. Thanks to our Secretary Mrs Regina Morgan for organizing the speakers for each month. The outing in July to the Aberaeron Fish Festival and Aberystwyth was thoroughly enjoyed. In August we visited the Italian Church in Henllan and the Celtic Winery nearby for our afternoon tea. There is an opportunity on Thursday 12th September for club members to attend the free exhibition and workshops put on by the Carmarthenshire 50+ Forum at the National Botanical Gardens. Transport will be provided by the Club. Next meeting will be Wednesday 4th September.

Neuadd Mynyddygarreg's Annual Family Event /Carnival this year was in the form of a Fete, due to the forecasted bad weather. The committee decided on this format rather than disappoint the community in not staging an event and joy of joys, the day turned out to be a fine sunny one and brought the crowds out. The Neuadd was filled to capacity and the happy crowd were entertained by members of KAMPS and the duo, Gareth and co. The theme was a western one and fancy-dress competitions for children and adults were held. There were various stalls to suit young and old, with teas and cakes and a BBQ stall. It was a delight to welcome Helen Mary Jones, AM, who took time out of her busy schedule to visit and in her Twitter account stated it was good to see so many people having fun and such an active community. Chairperson Chris Peters Bond thanks everyone for coming along and for the big support as always and to the committee who once again worked tirelessly. There were many visitors to the area present and it was so rewarding to hear how welcome they have been made to feel in the village and how impressed they are with where we live, somewhere we may often take for granted. It is vital that we support whatever goes on locally because we are so fortunate to have a safe community and the Neuadd plays a big role in this. A Grand Concert will be held at the Neuadd on Friday 6th September led by Daisy Owens of Trimsaran, a well-known singing talent in the Llanelli area. It promises to be a delight of entertainment from young people and tickets are for sale at £10 including light refreshments. Advertise your business here

Local news is very sparse this month, hopefully everyone is keeping well and have been enjoying the nice few weeks of sunshine we had recently. If the beautiful display of flowers to be seen throughout the village is anything to go by, then a lot of people have spent many hours in their gardens. A joy to behold indeed.

Ysgol Mynyddygareg News

News taken from last term's Newsletter tells us that the Foundation Phase were learning about insects, sorting them and finding which ones had many legs or no legs., Studying caterpillars, "The Hungry Caterpillar" was read and in the story, it has to eat lots of food to make a cocoon and turn into a butterfly. There was great excitement when Mrs Davies brought caterpillars into the classroom and saw them turn into butterflies. It was a long process but worth it seeing them fly around outside. Key Stage 2 had an interesting time with a technological and scientific theme running alongside a number of physical and open-air activities. The theme looked at rollercoaster systems, with examples from America, Spain, Dubai, Japan, China and Italy studied. The Reception pupils attended a biking session at Llanelli Leisure Centre organized by Carmarthenshire County Council. Years 5 and 6 visited Ysgol y Strade and the National Botanical Gardens for Science Workshops. They also visited Pendine Residential Centre and had an opportunity to abseil and paddle boat, follow the extreme stream and much more. The school choir and dancers went along to Parc y Bocs to entertain and promote the Welsh language. The event was organized by Menter Cwm Gwendraeth. Speaking personally, this little school, which wasn't always little, opened its’ doors to my mother, myself and my brother, my two children, and lastly, two grandchildren, spanning a total of almost one hundred years, providing each one with the happiest and safest of days and good grounding for life to come. CYLCH MEITHRIN's theme was 'Homes', with children drawing their homes, learning where they live and acted the story of 'The three little pigs'. The Cylch's sports day raised £248, an excellent effort. Thank you to Delia Daniels for helping to plant flowers and vegetables in the small garden once again. The children have so enjoyed eating the tomatoes and strawberries. The paramedics visited and showed their work and inside of the ambulance, with thanks to Chloe and Phil Lancey. As the children ( and staff ) enjoy the lovely long summer break and refreshed, start the new school year, the Value of the month / Gwerth y mis of Sept/Medi will be RESPECT / PARCH, a wonderful value that young and old should practise at all times towards people, creatures and life in general.
