The play explores 200 years of the West's relationship with oil, as well as 200 years of feminism, told through the story of a working mother and her relationship with her daughter. The play will be directed by Tracy Brigden and performed at the Mulitz-Gudelsky Theatre Lab. Professional artists Malika Coletta, Josanne Francis, Linda Krakaur, and Miriam Machado-Luces will engage K-12 students in arts programming. Coletta will teach workshops about steel pan instruments and their cultural connection to Trinidad and Tobago. As a guest artist-in-residence, Francis will bring music instruction to the International High School at Langley Park. Linda Krakaur will offer drama lessons and provide students with an opportunity to perform in front of their peers. Machado-Luces will teach students the process of filmmaking, including dialogue writing, storyboarding, final editing, and voice overlays. The residencies will be curriculum-driven, cultivating literacy skills among the students. Playwright Morgan McGuire and Dramaturge Susan Einhorn will assist in casting and directing a staged reading at Bowie State University of the play. The script, is based on an archive of video conferencing communications among teacher candidates from Maryland and Ohio as part of a research project. Topics of discussion covered in the conferences included perceptions of Africa, immigration, homophobia, bias, and religious intolerance. The playwright will use transcripts, audio and video recordings, and other artifacts to create the play. The resulting script will be further developed through a staged reading by a professional cast. The students will explore the museum's permanent collection and exhibitions through critiques, analysis, and in-depth discussion. Portfolio development will include critiques on portfolio strengths and weaknesses from educators, feedback from other students during gallery classes, and the installation of the students' artwork in one of the museum's galleries. The program will include a teacher training component that combines writing activities and reading comprehension with visual literacy.
