Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts announce the 32nd annual Artscape on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20 from 11am to 9pm and Sunday, July 21 from 11am to 8pm on Mount Royal Avenue and North Charles Street. The theme for Artscape 2013 is international, highlighting the No Passport Required: A Cross Cultural Arts Experience installation on North Charles Street. Throughout the festival’s offerings of visual and performing arts, more than 30 countries are celebrated, including Afghanistan, China, Germany, India, Jamaica, Mexico, the United States of America and Zimbabwe. America’s largest free arts festival features live music of various genres on four outdoor stages, a full schedule of theater, dance and opera performances, in addition to classical, folk and experimental music, street theater, fine art and crafts from more than 135 artisans in the Artists’ Market, world famous art cars, the Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize Semi-finalists Exhibition, film, children’s activities, exhibitors and an assortment of food and beverages. New: the Artscape Mobile App is now available for Apple and Android devices. Artscape visitors can download the free app to easily access up-to-date information on programming, as well as alerts on special activities at the festival. In addition, the Baltimore Artists Spotlight recognizes the talent, creativity and hard work of area artists. Throughout promotional material, the festival app and online, local artists are indentified with the asterisk (*) icon. After the festival closes, visitors can continue the celebration with Artscape After Hours on Saturday, July 20 from 9pm to 11pm. The 1700 and 1800 blocks of North Charles Street are transformed into an outdoor dance club with top local DJs, lasers, lighting and special effects. -more- Artscape, page two LOL@Artscape returns with some of the region’s funniest comedians. Held in conjunction with Artscape After Hours, festival-goers can enjoy comedic appearances by Larry Noto, Ben Rosen and Sara Armour. The event is hosted by comedian Jason Weems at Single Carrot Theatre. The Wells Fargo Main Stage features national and international singers and musicians each day of the festival. On Friday, July 19, performances include R&B singers Bridget Kelly at 6pm and Kem at 7:30pm. Highlights for Saturday, July 20 are The Dirty Dozen Brass Band at 6pm and the North Mississippi Allstars performing southern blues/rock at 7:30pm. On Sunday, July 21, folk-rock singer Anuhea performs at 5pm, followed by legendary reggae band The Wailers at 6:30pm. The Festival Stage showcases the talents of local and regional performers. Plus, Sound Off Live! bands take center stage. The winners of the annual band competition are 3UllNevaNo, Allie The Cats, Basement Instinct, Bill O’Connell & The Latin Jazz Allstars, Don Trunk, Greasy Hands, iLyAIMY, J Pope & Funk Friday, Reesa Renee, Reina Williams, Sojourne, Straight Up Tribal, The Booby Traps, The Control, The Rez and Yellow North. Indie bands from the region add to the musical excitement on one of the festival’s most lively stages: the Station North Stage. Weekend highlights include Matmos, Dead Melotron, Wild Honey and Red Sammy. Back by popular demand, Squonk Opera returns with GO Roadshow on the festival’s fourth outdoor stage. The show features a 34-foot long monster truck retrofitted with a truck-horn calliope, wall made of rotors and spinning grand piano that is played while it wheels around. This year, GO Roadshow adds an international flair to its appearance by featuring parades with local bands before every performance. No Passport Required: A Cross Cultural Arts Experience celebrates unique cultural differences, inspiring travel, exploration and instilling a greater acceptance and understanding of the unknown and unfamiliar. The installation encompasses North Charles Street with various art exhibitions, large-scale sculptures and interactive performances. Additionally, the 20th Annual Art Car Show, Crazy Ray’s Art Car Lounge and Art Car Parade, presented by GEICO are centered on North Charles Street between Lanvale Street and Lafayette Avenue. This year’s show includes an Art Cart Derby with gravity powered art carts from -more- Artscape, page three residents, artists and businesses of the Highlandtown Arts & Entertainment District (ha!). On Saturday, July 20, the Art Car Parade travels from the American Visionary Art Museum and through the festival at 11am. Festival-goers can work alongside Baltimore’s top visual artists to paint 10 miniature murals for the 10,000 Brushes & The Baltimore Mural Experience. The installation in Pearlstone Park allows festival visitors to experience the process and act of creating their own murals, which later travel to various locations in Baltimore as short term “pop-up” mural displays. In addition, all painters receive a souvenir brush courtesy of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service who generously donated the 10,000 paintbrushes. The Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize at MICA Semi-finalists Exhibition expands on the finalists’ exhibition at the Walters Art Museum by exhibiting the remaining artists whose work was reviewed in the second round of the Sondheim review. The exhibition includes artists working in all mediums imaginable and is located in the Decker Gallery and Meyerhoff Gallery of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). The winner of the eighth annual Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize competition and the $25,000 fellowship is announced during an award ceremony and reception on Saturday, July 13 at 7pm at the Walters Art Museum, located at 600 North Charles Street. The finalists are Gabriela Bulisova, Larry Cook, Caitlin Cunningham, Nate Larson, Louie Palu and Dan Steinhilber. Additionally, the second annual M&T Bank Sondheim Finalists’ Awards provides a $2,500 honorarium for each of the remaining finalists not selected for the fellowship. The Artscape Gallery Network connects two-dozen galleries throughout Baltimore to a wider audience through a promotional campaign sponsored by M&T Bank. The festival component provides those interested in the visual arts with an opportunity to enjoy the works of talented artists before, during and after Artscape. The Artscape Gallery Network exhibitions highlight the 2013 Janet & Walter Sondheim Artscape Prize applicants, along with artists working throughout the region. Five participating venues have been selected as Showcase Galleries: the Bromo Seltzer Arts Tower Gallery, Center for the Arts Gallery, Towson University, The Gallery at CCBC, Catonsville, MAXgallery @ Maxine Taylor Fine Arts, and The Wind Up Space. -more- Artscape, page four Gamescape returns for its third year at the festival in the Pinkard Gallery of the Bunting Center at MICA. The interactive visual arts exhibition showcases video games and the talented artists, developers and designers who create them. Gamescape lets festival-goers control the screen and includes classic arcade machines, video game demonstrations and panels on game development and design. New this year, the exhibition has a costume component. The festival celebrates dance from around the world with dynamic performances by renowned artists and dance companies. Dancescape takes place at The Patricia and Arthur Modell Performing Arts Center at The Lyric and the Theatre Project. Highlights include Lil Buck, Taikoza, Charm City Movement Arts, Full Circle Dance Company, Teelin Irish Dance Company, Tehreema Mitha Dance Company (TMDC) and The Clothesline Muse. Artscape visitors can also take in an eclectic offering of theater, opera, folk and classical music and organ concerts from regional artists and companies. Highlights for the Theatre Project include G. Davis Productions, Baltimore Improv Group, Circus of Wonders and Final Fantasy Rock Opera. The Falvey Hall in The Brown Center of MICA features Musicians of Mercy, Ruby Weston, Lyric Opera of Baltimore, Tarvo Music, Bharati Soman, Soprano and César Orozco Trio. Corpus Christi Church hosts 12 concerts throughout the weekend by talented local and visiting musicians, including Quintaero, Larksong A Cappella Ensemble, Simple Gifts and New Wave Singers. Single Carrot Theatre showcases performances from their theater, along with Stillepointe Theatre Initiative, PBJamz & Friends!, Effervescent Collective, EMP Collective and Parallel Octave Chorus. Kidscape is now located in the Corpus Christi Church Parking Lot near the corner of Lafayette Street and Mount Royal Avenue. The area offers hands-on activities for children with international-theme crafts. While there, children can decorate chopsticks, turn maps into bags and create mini piñatas. Local attractions also take young festival-goers on an educational journey with displays and craft projects highlighting their current exhibits. The 32nd annual Artscape is presented by Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and produced by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts.
