When i thought of flights to Space, i immediately thought of doutzen Kroes, who will be the first model to go to Space in 2014. i’m excited to bring you her story in this magazine. Space is a captivating place. galileo, the maya, the Egyptians - they all looked at the stars and used them as guides. the maya were also very interested in time. Birgitte rasine (who was introduced to me by top model and regular OYL contributor, anne-marie van dijk) is an expert on the maya people and their calendar. She offers some insight into this subject, especially WELCOME! regarding the “doomsday” 2012 prophecy. Should we find shelter? his is issue #6 and we are all that we should protect these go travel somewhere and hide? set to talk about one of my amazing spots. -

H A MEMORIAL M HONORING THE MEMORY OF THE SEVEN ASTRONAUTS WHO SERVED ON THE 7 P SPACE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA. a g e WHEREAS, the members of this chamber are grief-stricken at the loss of the 1 space shuttle Columbia and her seven astronauts on Saturday, February 1, 2003; and WHEREAS, the women and men who perished aboard Columbia embodied the very best qualities of mankind. Their intelligence, diligence and valor led to their selection for the space program and their presence on Columbia; and WHEREAS, today we pause not only to remember this tragedy, but we also pause to honor the achievements of seven exemplary people; and WHEREAS, let us recite the names of the seven astronauts: Rick D. Husband, age forty-five and the commander of Columbia. Commander Husband was a colonel in the United States air force. He was selected as an astronaut in 1994 and prior to this mission had logged two hundred thirty hours in space. His home was Amarillo, Texas; William C. McCool, age forty-one and the pilot for the mission. He was a commander in the United States navy and a former test pilot. Commander McCool became an astronaut in 1996, and this was his first space flight. His home was Lubbock, Texas; Michael P. Anderson, age forty-three and the payload commander for Columbia. Lieutenant Colonel Anderson was an air force man who grew up as the son of an air force man. Selected as an astronaut in 1994, he had previously logged over two hundred eleven hours in space. -

National Aeronautics and Space Administration Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center Houston, Texas 77058 Biographical Data TAYLOR G. WANG PAYLOAD SPECIALIST PERSONAL DATA: Born June 16, 1940, in Mainland China. He is a Physicist at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, and is a U.S. citizen. He is married, and has two sons. EDUCATION: Received a bachelor of science degree in physics in 1967, a master of science degree in physics in 1968, and a doctorate in physics in 1971, from the University of California at Los Angeles. ORGANIZATIONS: Member, American Physical Society, Materials Research Society, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Sigma Xi, and a Fellow in the Acoustical Society of America. EXPERIENCE: After completing his doctorate, Dr. Wang joined the California Institute of Technology Jet propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in 1972, as a senior scientist. He is currently Program Manager for Materials Processing in Space. At JPL he was responsible for the inception and development of containerless processing science and technology research. He is the Principal Investigator (PI) on the Spacelab 3 mission NASA Drop Dynamics (DDM) experiments, PI on the NASA SPAR Flight Experiment #77-18 "Dynamics of Liquid Bubble," PI on the NASA SPAR Flight Experiment #76- 20 "Containerless Processing Technology," and PI on the Department of Energy Experiment "Spherical Shell Technology." Dr. Wang has been conducting precursor drop dynamics experiments for the DDM in ground-based laboratories employing acoustic levitation systems, neutral buoyancy systems and drop towers, and in the near weightless environment provided by JSC's KC-135 airplane flights and SPAR rockets. These flights have helped to define the experimental parameters and procedures in the DDM experiments to be performed on Spacelab 3. -

Over 25 years of active service, he completed seven space missions and spent over 1,600 hours in space. After retiring, he founded Ad Astra Rocket, an aerospace engineering company that is researching electric propulsion engines and applying these advances to public transportation in his native Costa Rica The start of your space career dates back to the 1980s. What was the situation back then and what prospects were available? It was the start of the space shuttle era. Flights began in 1981, but they were very infrequent, as the technology was still under development. In 1980, there were only American astronauts at NASA, except for two Europeans (Claude Nicollier from Switzerland and Wubbo Ockels from the Netherlands) who entered the program in my group, marking the start of collaboration with the European Space Agency, which had just been established. My first space flight was in January 1986. During my 25 years at NASA, I participated as an astronaut on seven missions, sharing the world record for space flights with my colleague Jerry Ross. -

From this vantage point, the Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science (ATLAS) payload can view the Earth, the sun, and their dynamic interactions against the background of space. Earth is prominently displayed and is the focus of the mission's space plasma physics and Earth sciences observations. The colors of the setting sun, measured by sensitive instruments, provide detailed information about ozone, carbon dioxide, and other gases which determined Earth's climate and environment. Encircling the scene are the names of the flight crew members. The additional star in the ring is to recognize Charles R. Chappell and Michael Lampton, alternate payload specialists, and the entire ATLAS-1 team for its dedication and support of this "Mission to Planet Earth." The NASA insignia design for space shuttle flights is reserved for use by the astronauts and for other official use as the NASA Administrator may authorize. Challenger Accident in a Rogers Commission Hearing at KSC

Aldrich Former Program Director, NSTS August 27, 2008 Recently, I was asked by John Shannon, the current Space Shuttle Program Manager, to comment on my experiences, best practices, and lessons learned as a former Space Shuttle program manager. This project is part of a broader knowledge capture and retention initiative being conducted by the NASA Johnson Space Center in an “oral history” format. One of the questions posed was to comment on some of the most memorable moments of my time as a Space Shuttle program manager. Without question, the top two of these were the launch of Challenger on STS‐51L on January 28, 1986, and the launch of Discovery on STS‐26 on September 29, 1988. Background The tragic launch and loss of Challenger occurred over 22 years ago. 73 seconds into flight the right hand Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) broke away from the External Tank (ET) as a result of a burn‐ through in its aft most case to case joint and the Space Shuttle vehicle disintegrated resulting in the total loss of the vehicle and crew. The events leading up to that launch are still vivid in my mind and deeply trouble me to this day, as I know they always will. This paper is not about what occurred during the countdown leading up to the launch – those facts and events were thoroughly investigated and documented by the Rogers Commission. Rather, what I can never come to closure with is how we, as a launch team, and I, as one of the leaders of that team, allowed the launch to occur. -

Gillette NASA History Office Code JCH NASA Headquarters Washington, DC 20546 MONOGRAPHS IN AEROSPACE HISTORY Number 1 December 1992 PREFACE Since the idea of a reusable rocket-plane was first seriously-studied by Eugen Sänger in the 1930s, the concept has e xerted s trong i nfluence o n t he d evelopment o f human s paceflight. I n t he U nited S tates, detailed proposals for a reusable space vehicle were developed as early as the 1950s, and several projects reached the design and test stage in the 1960s. Initially, the Space Shuttle was envisioned as a fully reusable, commercial spaceplane. During the early 1970s, however, its development faced considerable obstacles, budgetary shortfalls, some congressional opposition, increasing public apathy, and design difficulties. What emerged was a smaller, semi-reusable vehicle, advertised as an economical and efficient means of space transport. Whether the Shuttle has fulfilled these goals is a topic of some controversy. Even so, the Space Shuttle has been the cornerstone of the U.S. space program, and the driving force behind much of the budget and programs of NASA for over two decades. Throughout the long history of the Space Shuttle concept, numerous books, studies, reports, and articles have been written. This selective, annotated bibliography discusses those works judged to be most essential for researchers writing scholarly studies on the Space Shuttle's history. A thematic arrangement of material concerning the Shuttle will, it is hoped, b ring clarity and simplicity to such a complex subject.
