ORTHOFLASH - ST.GEORGE MONTRÉAL YOUTH MINISTRY THEOPHANY THEOPHANY (from GR theophania) means shining forth or manifestation of God. The Old Testament contains many stories demonstrating God’s immense love for His creation and the extent to which He is willing to go in order to bring human beings into fellowship with Himself (God manifested Himself to Abraham, Jacob and Moses). In the New Testament, THEOPHANY marks the Baptism of Christ by the glorious Prophet and Forerunner John the Baptist. Christ’s baptism in the Jordan was “theophany” because it was the beginning of our Lord’s public ministry. It was also a “theophany” in that the world was granted a revelation of the Trinitarian nature of God: the Father's voice is heard from Heaven, the Son of God is incarnate and standing physically in the Jordan, and the Holy Spirit descends on Him in the form of a dove (Mt. 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22; John 1:31-34.) The Icon of the Feast tells the story from the Gospels in images and color. The theme of “manifestation” or “revelation” is also expressed with the symbolism of light. In the hymn of the Feast we sing, “Christ has appeared and enlightened the world.” The Church celebrates on this day the illumination of the world by the light of Christ. THEOPHANY is one of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, celebrated on January 6. In mystic commemoration of the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan, the Great Blessing of Water is performed. As the Troparion of the Feast is sung, the celebrant immerses the Cross into the water three times and then proceeds to sprinkle the water in the four directions of the world. The holy water so blessed is used by the priests to bless the homes of the faithful.

A NOTE FROM THE PASTOR FR. JOSEPH PURPURA AND THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PARISH COUNCIL ALAN ROSSY

In the 5th Ode of the Canon of Theophany, we hear these beautiful and powerful words of great hope and life, “Verily , the Originator of life, comes to unravel the fall of Adam, the first of creation; and He Who needs not purification, since He is God, granted to the fallen one (Adam) purification in the Jordan. And as He abolished in Him the enmity, He thereby granted safety transcending all intelligence.” In this Canon, we hear of the mighty good works that God has done for each of us. God who was from before all time, the very creator of this world, becomes one of us, so that He might purify us and undo the fall of Adam. In the last Feast (the Nativity of Christ [Christmas]), we celebrated God becoming one of us (incarnation – becoming man). Today, in this Feast of Theophany, we celebrate Christ’s Baptism in the Jordon, not because He needed purification, but because Adam and all of humanity needed purification and restoration to God. Therefore, in this Feast, we celebrate that God has broken down the wall that separates man and God. God becomes one of us, so that we might become one with Him. He purifies Adam, the Jordan, all the waters of the world and all of creation in this great event. Thus, we take the blessed water of this feast, and we bless our Church and our homes, restoring us and them to God. If you would like your home blessed this year, please see the back page of this bulletin for more information, or call the Church office 514-276-8533 ext. 200 to schedule your home blessing. ﺭﺳﺎﻟﺔ ﺍﻷﺏ ﺍﻟﺭﺍﻋﻲ ﺟﻭﺯﻳﻑ ﭘﻭﺭﭘﻭﺭﺍ ﻭﺁﻻﻥ ﺭﻭﺳﻲ (ﺭﺋﻳﺱ ﻣﺟﻠﺱ ﺇﺩﺍﺭﺓ ﻛﻧﻳﺳﺔ ﺍﻟﻘﺩﻳﺱ ﺟﺎﻭﺭﺟﻳﻭﺱ)

SCRIPTURE READINGS—THE MORE YOU READ THE BIBLE, THE MORE YOU LOVE THE AUTHOR

THE EPISTLE

(For the Sunday before the Theophany of Christ) O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance. Unto Thee, O Lord, will I cry, O my God.

The Reading from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to St. Timothy. (4:5-8)

My child Timothy, be watchful in all things, suffer hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. For, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the season of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, and I have guarded the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will reward me at that day, and not to me only, but also to all those who have loved His appearing.

THE GOSPEL

(For the Sunday before the Theophany of Christ)

The reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark. (1:1-8)

The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.” John the Baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, and had a leather girdle around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, “After me comes He Who is mightier than I, the strap of Whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

THE SYNAXARION

Today in the Holy Orthodox Church is the Paramon (Eve) of the Theophany (Epiphany) of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ. On January 5, we commemorate the holy Martyrs Theopemptos, bishop of Nicomedia, and Theonas the former magician.

Verses That Theopemptos might die, let him say: Contesting, I die, my head by the sword severed. Martyr Theonas cried out with the Psalter: They laid me in the lowest pit, as saith David. On the fifth, Theopemptos left life with a sword’s help.

Theopempos was among the first to suffer martyrdom under Emperor Diocletian, who threatened Theopempos with death if he did not deny Christ. The courageous bishop responded to the emperor: “It stands written, ‘Do not be afraid of those who kill the body’ (Luke 12:4), ‘but cannot kill the soul’ (Matthew 10:28).” Theopempos suffered from hunger and was tortured in various ways. Finally, the emperor summoned the magician Theonas to outwit this Godly man through magic. Theonas dissolved the most potent poison in water and gave it to Theopempos to drink. Theopempos traced the sign of the cross over the glass and drank the poison. Theonas, upon seeing that the poison had no effect on Theopempos, turned to the emperor and shouted, “I, too, am a Christian and bow down before the Crucified One.” Theopemptos died by the sword, and Theonoas was buried alive. Both entered the Kingdom in 298.

On this day, we also commemorate Venerable Syncletica of Alexandria and Venerable-martyr Romanos of Athos. By their intercessions, O Christ God, have mercy upon us. Amen.

ORTHOFLASH – St. George Montréal Youth Ministry THEOPHANY THEOPHANY (from GR theophania) means shining forth or manifestation of God. ﻋﻳﺩ ﺍﻟﻅﻬﻭﺭ ﺍﻹﻟﻬﻲ (ﻋﻳﺩ ﺍﻟﻐﻁﺎﺱ) ﺗَ ﱡﺷﺗﻖ ﻛﻠﻣﺔ THEOPHANY ﺍﻹﻧﻛﻠﻳﺯﻳﺔ ﻣﻥ ﻛﻠﻣﺔ "theophania" ﺍﻟﻳﻭﻧﺎﻧﻳﺔ ﻭﺗﻌﻧﻲ ﺇﺷﺭﺍﻕ ﺃﻭ ﻅﻬﻭﺭ ﷲ. ﻳﺣﺗﻭﻱ ﺍﻟﻌﻬﺩ ﺍﻟﻘﺩﻳﻡ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻗﺻﺹ ﻋﺩﻳﺩﺓ ﺗُﻅﻬﺭ ٌﺣ ﱠﺏ ﷲ ﺍﻟﻔﺎﺋﻖ ﻟﺧﻠﻳﻘﺗﻪ ﻭﻣﺩﻯ ﺍﺳﺗﻌﺩﺍﺩﻩ ﻟﻠﻌﻣﻝ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺇﻋﺎﺩﺓ ﺑﻧﻲ ﺍﻟﺑﺷﺭ ﺇﻟﻰ ﺣﺿﺭﺗﻪ . In the Orthodox Church, there are a CHURCH ETIQUETTE lot of customs and traditions that (SOURCE: WWW.ANTIOCHIAN.ORG) are important parts of our worship. Some are cultural; some are pious customs. Some are essential; some are not. From time-to-time, we need to address some of these various etiquette issues to inform our communities how we can best understand each other and work together to worship the all-holy Trinity. ATTIRE ‐ USING GOOD JUDGMENT

Remember the time when people put on their "Sunday best" to go to church? In fact, dress clothes were often referred to as 'Sunday clothes." This is not all that common today; in fact all too often the dress in our temples has become too casual. In all the areas of our lives, we should offer Christ our best; and the same is true of our dress. We should offer Christ our "Sunday best," not our everyday or common wear. And we should dress modestly, not in a flashy way that would bring attention to ourselves - and certainly not in a provocative or alluring way. Our dress should always be becoming to a Christian - especially in the temple. Here are some general guidelines:

 Children: Only young children (under 10) can wear shorts to the services - and then only dress shorts. Athletic shoes, cut-offs, spandex shorts, etc., are never appropriate for wear in the temple (for children or adults!). Shoes or sandals should be clean and tied. No one should wear a T-shirt with any kind of writing on it.  Women: Dresses should be modest. No tank tops (or dresses with only straps at the shoulders), no short skirts (mini-skirts), and no skin-tight dresses. Dresses should have backs and should not be low-cut in the front. If women wear pants to the services, they should be dress pants (not jeans or leggings). Shorts of any type are inappropriate.  Men: Men should also dress modestly. Coats and ties are not mandatory, but certainly always appropriate. Shirts should have collars and be buttoned to the collar (the actual collar button may be undone, but two or three buttons undone is inappropriate). Trousers should be clean. Blue (or black, or khaki, etc.) jeans are usually too casual for wear at the services (especially those with patches or holes).

Again, shorts of any type are inappropriate. If you are going someplace after the services where you need to dress casually, bring a change of clothing with you and change after the fellowship hour. Remember to use your best judgment and good taste when dressing for the services. After all, you do not need to be seen by everyone else - you go to meet and worship God.
