The Old Testament contains many stories demonstrating God’s immense love for His creation and the extent to which He is willing to go in order to bring human beings into fellowship with Himself (God manifested Himself to Abraham, Jacob and Moses). In the New Testament, THEOPHANY marks the Baptism of Christ by the glorious Prophet and Forerunner John the Baptist. Christ’s baptism in the Jordan was “theophany” because it was the beginning of our Lord’s public ministry. It was also a “theophany” in that the world was granted a revelation of the Trinitarian nature of God: the Father's voice is heard from Heaven, the Son of God is incarnate and standing physically in the Jordan, and the Holy Spirit descends on Him in the form of a dove (Mt. 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22; John 1:31-34.) The Icon of the Feast tells the story from the Gospels in images and color. The theme of “manifestation” or “revelation” is also expressed with the symbolism of light. In the hymn of the Feast we sing, “Christ has appeared and enlightened the world.” The Church celebrates on this day the illumination of the world by the light of Christ. THEOPHANY is one of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, celebrated on January 6. In mystic commemoration of the Baptism of Christ in the Jordan, the Great Blessing of Water is performed. As the Troparion of the Feast is sung, the celebrant immerses the Cross into the water three times and then proceeds to sprinkle the water in the four directions of the world. The holy water so blessed is used by the priests to bless the homes of the faithful. JOSEPH PURPURA AND THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PARISH COUNCIL ALAN ROSSY In the 5th Ode of the Canon of Theophany, we hear these beautiful and powerful words of great hope and life, “Verily Jesus, the Originator of life, comes to unravel the fall of Adam, the first of creation; and He Who needs not purification, since He is God, granted to the fallen one (Adam) purification in the Jordan. And as He abolished in Him the enmity, He thereby granted safety transcending all intelligence.” In this Canon, we hear of the mighty good works that God has done for each of us. God who was from before all time, the very creator of this world, becomes one of us, so that He might purify us and undo the fall of Adam. In the last Feast (the Nativity of Christ [Christmas]), we celebrated God becoming one of us (incarnation – becoming man). Today, in this Feast of Theophany, we celebrate Christ’s Baptism in the Jordon, not because He needed purification, but because Adam and all of humanity needed purification and restoration to God. Therefore, in this Feast, we celebrate that God has broken down the wall that separates man and God. God becomes one of us, so that we might become one with Him. He purifies Adam, the Jordan, all the waters of the world and all of creation in this great event. Thus, we take the blessed water of this feast, and we bless our Church and our homes, restoring us and them to God. If you would like your home blessed this year, please see the back page of this bulletin for more information, or call the Church office 514-276-8533 ext. 200 to schedule your home blessing. ﷲ ﺍﻟﺫﻱ ﻛﺎﻥ ﻣﻥ ﻗﺑﻝ ﻛﻝ ﺍﻟﺩﻫﻭﺭ ﺧﺎﻟﻖ ﺍﻟﻌﺎﻟﻡ ﻳﺻﺑﺢ ًﻭﺍﺣﺩﺍ ﻣﻧﺎ ﻟﻛﻲ ﻳﻧﻘﻲ ﻭﻳﻣﺣﻲ ﺳﻘﻭﻁ ﺁﺩﻡ. ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﻌﻳﺩ ﺍﻷﺧﻳﺭ (ﻣﻳﻼﺩ ﺍﻟﻣﺳﻳﺢ) ﺍﺣﺗﻔﻠﻧﺎ ﺑﺗﺟﺳﺩ ﷲ ﻟﻳﺻﺑﺢ ًﻭﺍﺣﺩﺍ ﻣﻧﺎ (ﺃﻥ ﻳﺻﺑﺢ ﺇﻧﺳﺎﻧًﺎ). ﺍﻟﻳﻭﻡ ﻓﻲ ﻋﻳﺩ ﺍﻟﻅﻬﻭﺭ ﺍﻹﻟﻬﻲ ﻫﺫﺍ ﻧﺣﺗﻔﻝ ﺑﻣﻌﻣﻭﺩﻳﺔ ﺍﻟﻣﺳﻳﺢ ﻓﻲ ﻧﻬﺭ ﺍﻷﺭﺩﻥ ﻻ ﻷﻧﻪ ﻛﺎﻥ ﺑﺣﺎﺟﺔ ﺇﻟﻰ ﺗﻧﻘﻳﺔ ﻭﻟﻛﻥ ﻷﻥ ﺁﺩﻡ ﻭﺍﻹﻧﺳﺎﻧﻳﺔ ﺟﻣﻌﺎء ﺍﺣﺗﺎﺟﻭﺍ ﻫﺫﻩ ﺍﻟﺗﻧﻘﻳﺔ ﻭﺍﺳﺗﻌﺎﺩﺓ ﺍﻟﻌﻼﻗﺔ ﺑﺎ. ﻟﺫﻟﻙ ﻓﻲ ﻫﺫﺍ ﺍﻟﻌﻳﺩ ﻧﺣﺗﻔﻝ ﺃﻥ ﷲ ﻗﺩ ﺃﺯﺍﻝ ﺍﻟﺟﺩﺍﺭ ﺍﻟﺫﻱ ﻳﻔﺻﻝ ﺑﻳﻥ ﺍﻹﻧﺳﺎﻥ ﻭﷲ. ﷲ ﻳﺻﺑﺢ ﻭﺍﺣﺩ ﻣﻧﺎ ﻟﻛﻲ ﻧﺻﺑﺢ ﻭﺍﺣﺩ ﻣﻌﻪ. ﻳﻁﻬﺭ ﺁﺩﻡ ، ﻧﻬﺭ ﺍﻷﺭﺩﻥ ﻭ ﻛﻝ ﻣﻳﺎﻩ ﺍﻟﻌﺎﻟﻡ ﺑﻝ ﻭﻛﻝ ﺍﻟﺧﻠﻳﻘﺔ ﻓﻲ ﻫﺫﺍ ﺍﻟﺣﺩﺙ ﺍﻟﻌﻅﻳﻡ. ﻭﻟﺫﻟﻙ ﻧﺄﺧﺫ ﺍﻟﻣﺎء ﺍﻟﻣﺑﺎﺭﻙ ﻟﻬﺫﺍ ﺍﻟﻌﻳﺩ ﻭﻧﺑﺎﺭﻙ ﻛﻧﻳﺳﺗﻧﺎ ﻭﻣﻧﺎﺯﻟﻧﺎ ، ﻭﻧﺟﺩﺩ ﻋﻼﻗﺗﻧﺎ ﺑﺎ. ﺇﺫﺍ ﻛﻧﺕ ﺗﺭﻏﺏ ﻓﻲ ﺗﺑﺭﻳﻙ ﻣﻧﺯﻟﻙ ﻫﺫﺍ ﺍﻟﻌﺎﻡ ﻓﻳﺭﺟﻰ ﺍﻻﻁﻼﻉ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺍﻟﺻﻔﺣﺔ ﺍﻟﺧﻠﻔﻳﺔ ﻟﻬﺫﻩ ﺍﻟﻧﺷﺭﺓ ﻟﻣﺯﻳﺩ ﻣﻥ ﺍﻟﻣﻌﻠﻭﻣﺎﺕ ، ﺃﻭ ﺍﺗﺻﻝ ﺑﻣﻛﺗﺏ ﺍﻟﻛﻧﻳﺳﺔ ٥١٤٢٧٦٨٥٣٣ ﺛﻡ ﺍﻁﻠﺏ ٢٠٠ ﻟﺗﺣﺩﻳﺩ ﻣﻳﻌﺎﺩ ﻟﺗﺑﺭﻳﻙ ﻣﻧﺯﻟﻙ ﺑﺎﻟﻣﺎء ﺍﻟﻣﻘﺩﺱ Sunday, January 05, 2020 www.saintgeorgemontreal.org 3 The color prinng of this bullen is made possible thanks to a generous donaon Divine Liturgy Variables for Sunday, January 5, 2020 During the Little Entrance, chant the Resurrectional Apolytikion.
