Roma 22 febbraio 2013. Arte, Religione e Film. Questi sono i tre elementi chiave che da sempre caratterizzano Francesco Vezzoli sin dall’inizio della sua carriera. Tre universi interconnessi che Vezzoli articola in una serie di intense allegorie ricche di elaborati riferimenti che abbracciano le sue video installazioni, i ricami a piccolo punto, le fotografie e le sue performance, mescolando diversi linguaggi e generi.
MAXXI, MoMAPS1 e MOCA collaborano per la prima volta per questo nuovo e ambizioso progetto, intitolato appunto THE TRINTY.
Si tratta della prima ampia retrospettiva internazionale di Francesco Vezzoli, che espone 15 anni di lavoro in tre mostre separate ma connesse, ognuna delle quali esplora in profondità gli aspetti fondamentali delle sue opere. Gli spazi fluidi del MAXXI di Roma, progettati da Zaha Hadid saranno trasformati in un museo dallo sfarzoso stile ottocentesco. La mostra intitolata GALLERIA VEZZOLI (29 maggio – 24 novembre 2013) sarà incentrata soprattutto sull’auto celebrazione artistica con una sezione molto approfondita dedicata agli auto ritratti.
Una chiesa sconsacrata del XIX secolo, costruita in origine nel Sud Italia sarà smontata e rimontata nel cortile del MoMAPS1. Questa installazione gigantesca e affascinante, ospiterà opere relative al tema del culto nel percorso artistico di Vezzoli.
Infine il MOCA inaugurerà CINEMA VEZZOLI, una mostra che sottolineerà la predilezione di Vezzoli a utilizzare il mondo del Cinema classico europeo e il mondo delle star Hollywoodiane, per rappresentare l’ossessione di oggi per la fama, la politica e l’ostentazione pubblica della vita privata.
Le mostre apriranno a breve distanza l’una dall’altra, svelando per la prima volta, in modo graduale fino a quando non saranno eccezionalmente aperte tutte nello stesso momento, la complessità del mondo di Vezzoli.
Nato nel 1971 Francesco Vezzoli è cresciuto artisticamente a Londra, dove ha studiato arte alla St. Martin School of Art. Ha partecipato ufficialmente tra le altre alla 49, 51 e 52 Biennale di Venezia, Performa 07 la Biennale del Whitney del 2006, la sesta biennale di Shangai, la 26 Biennale di S. Paolo e la 6 Biennale internazionale di Istanbul. I suoi lavori sono stati esposti tra gli altri al Moderna Museet (Stockholm), Tate Modern (London),The Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), New Museum of Contemporary Art (New York), Fondazione Prada (Milan), Palazzo Grassi-François Pinault Foundation (Venice), Whitechapel Art Gallery (London), Pinakothek der Moderne (Munich), Kunsthalle (Wien), The Power Plant (Toronto), Le Consortium (Dijon), MuseuSerralves (Porto), Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), Museum Ludwig (Köln), Jeu de Paume (Paris), The Garage CCC (Moscow), MAMBo (Bologna), Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art (Rotterdam) and Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea (Turin).

Art, Religion and Movies. These are the three key elements which have always been the main characters in artist Francesco Vezzoli’s work since the beginning of his career. Three intertwined universes that Vezzoli wove in a series of strong allegories with a rich subtext of elaborate references, involving video installations, petit-point embroideries, photography and live performances, mixing heterogeneous languages and genres.
Maxxi, MoMAPS1 and MOCA are now for the first time collaborating on this new over-ambitious project, aptly titled “TheTrinity”.
The first extensive international retrospective show of Francesco Vezzoli, displaying 15 years of work in three separate but related exhibitions, each one examining in depth the fundamental aspects of his body of work.
The futuristic spaces of MAXXI in Rome, designed by Zaha Hadid, will be transformed into a over-decorated 1800’s style museum.The exhibition, titled “Galleria Vezzoli” (28 May – 24 November 2013), will focus especially on Vezzoli’s vocation to artistic quotation, with a specific section dedicated to the artist’s self- portraits.
A real deconsecrated XIX century church, originally built in the south of Italy, will be deconstructed and re- located in the yard ofMoMAPS1. This giant and spellbinding installation will host the evidences of Vezzoli’s own artistic cult.
Lastly, MOCA (LA) will open CINEMA VEZZOLI, an exhibition which will outline Vezzoli’s attitude in playing with the world of classic European cinema and contemporary Hollywood stardom as a way of mirroring today’s obsession with fame, politics and the public exposure of private issues.
Each exhibition will open at short distance one from the other, unveiling for the very first time the whole complexity of Vezzoli’s world step by step, continent by continent, until the three shows will be exceptionally open at the same time. --- Born in 1971, Francesco Vezzoli grew up as an artist in London, where he studied Fine Art at Central St. Martin’s School of Art.
He officially participated, among others, at the the 49th, the 51th and the 52th Venice Biennial, Performa07, 2006 Whitney Biennial, the 6th Shanghai Biennial, the 26th São Paulo Biennial and the 6th International Istanbul Biennal.
