Dante Gabriel needs Erin Hamilton's blood. The hunger is all-consuming, but flashbacks of his time in captivity, as well as his quest for answers, leave him questioning everything. With the help of his cousin, his father's ghost, and a Shakespeare-quoting voodoo priestess, he's determined to decode the book his grandfather claims will lead him only to darkness. Erin loves Dante and has finally accepted him for what he is, but she feels like she's been transported into another world. Ghosts, werewolves, and vampires are all real? Even her best friend might not be what she seems. In addition, the mystery at the hospital deepens—a doctor is now missing —and Erin fears there may be a connection to Dante. John Paul Getty III Death and the Getty Family Tragedies. John Paul Getty III’s recent death brings to a close a tragic chapter in the wealthy family’s decades-long drama of strife and eccentricity. Anthony Haden-Guest reports on their woe. Anthony Haden-Guest. The death on February 5 of John Paul Getty III at Wormsley, his estate in the English county of Buckinghamshire, where he had long been watched over by his mother, Gail, and a round-the-clock team of caregivers, writes finis to a story as terrible as it is gripping. It is in its essentials a tale of the family lives of the hugely rich so we might as well begin at a peculiarly high or low point which is with his kidnapping at the age of 16 by a gang of mobsters at 3 a.m. on July 10, 1973 on Rome’s Piazza Farnese. Two days later Gail Getty received a ransom demand for $17 million. The police were at first dubious and there was a persistent rumor that the rebellious, counterculture youth had planned a fake kidnapping which had turned real. At any rate, Gail Getty, who was divorced, had nowhere near that sum. Nor had the boy’s father, John Paul Getty, Jr. His grandfather, John Paul Getty, whom Fortune had named as the richest American in 1957, was appealed to. Getty Sr., who had been living in the U.K. since the 1950s, summoned the press to Sutton Place, his Tudor mansion in Surrey, and told them, “I have 14 other grandchildren and if I pay one penny now I’ll have 14 kidnapped grandchildren.” So his grandson was in captivity—it would later emerge that he had been chained to a stake in a cave in Calabria—for three months when the Rome-based newspaper, Il Messaggero, received a package containing a clump of blond hair and a left ear. A note informed the world that both had been taken from the young Getty and more would follow unless the ransom was paid. John Paul Getty, Jr. borrowed the money from his father and his son was released that December. The ransom had reportedly been bargained down to $2.7 million, a loan upon which the father charged the son 4 percent interest. Getty Sr.’s attitude to money is of interest here. When partygoers attending an extremely unusual event, a dance at Sutton Place, found that there was a pay- phone and the private phones had been locked, this was seen as a rich man’s joke-that-wasn’t-quite-a-joke. Michael Pochna, a New Yorker, whose father worked for Getty, has told me of being taken by his father to meet him as a child in the early 1950s. Pochna says he had a small suite in the Ritz and spoke extremely slowly. "Would you like a glass of milk?" he asked. Getty opened the window and brought a milk bottle in off the ledge, then rinsed a glass in the basin. "Room service is very expensive here," he explained. Pochna added: "He wasn't cheap. He just liked tweaking people." John Paul Getty, Jr. was married to Gail Harris, a former water polo champion. John Paul III was born in 1956 and a daughter, Aileen, the following year. Getty Jr. was sent to run the Getty interests in Rome but the allure of the city proved too much for him. His marriage soon unraveled and he and Gail divorced in 1964. He was introduced to Talitha Pol, the ravishing daughter of a Dutch artist, at a dinner given by Claus von Bulow, who had worked for his father. She had expected to be seated next to Rudolf Nureyev but the dancer was a no-show. She wound up with the oil heir and they were married two years later. John Paul Getty, Jr. was left a quarter of the Getty Trust, worth $1.3 billion, but blaming his son for his condition, he refused to foot the bill for his care. Talitha Pol truly lit up a room. They had a child they called Tara Gabriel Galaxy Gramophone Getty—it was those times, David Bowie called his son Zowie—and the couple took off on a heroin-fuelled magical mystery tour with such constellations of the time as Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithfull. Talitha died in Rome of a heroin overdose on July 14, 1971 in the 12-month period that also saw the deaths of Edie Sedgwick, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Janis Joplin. Her husband’s wild days were over. He became a semi-recluse, devoted to cricket to which he was introduced by Jagger, and to building a collection of rare books, which he kept in a tower in Wormsley and included the first, second, third, and fourth Shakespeare folios and a first edition of Chaucer. The Getty horrors were not close to being done with. The same year that John Paul III was kidnapped, George Getty, Paul Getty Senior’s son by his first marriage, died a curious death. “He fell twice on a barbecue fork,” von Bulow told me some time ago. “Well, we don’t know. He went to the bathroom. They broke down the door. And they got an ambulance. And he was taken to the hospital. They took him to a discreet place, which was out of the way, where they could put him in under a false name or something. And they just looked at the perforations of his stomach. They didn’t look at anything else. And he was lying there with a massive overdose of sleeping pills. And died of them.” John Paul III was released that December. He called his grandfather to thank him but, Getty Sr., refused to take the call. He spent a couple of weeks at a clinic, and went on a skiing holiday. Less than a year later he married Martine Zacher, who was six years older, in Sovicille, Italy. The bride wore black. Incensed at the match, his grandfather cut off his income from the family trust. In the mid-'70s John Paul Getty III and Martine relocated to Los Angeles, with occasional trips to New York, where, Vincent Fremont of the Warhol Foundation says, he often came by the Factory to see Andy Warhol and Fred Hughes. Indeed, there is a photograph of him at a Warhol party in 1976, poignantly labeled. In 1977 he was studying Chinese history at Pepperdine. But he was massively depressed and addicted both to hard drugs and to the spirits his kidnappers had given him to keep him sedated, and in April 1981 he OD’ed on methadone, Valium, and alcohol. He had massive liver failure and his brain was deprived of oxygen. He wound up a quadriplegic with restricted vision who could only communicate by screaming. It was estimated that his medical expenses would be $25,000 a month. John Paul Getty, Sr. had died on June 6, 1976. John Paul Getty, Jr. was left a quarter of the Getty Trust, worth $1.3 billion, but blaming his son for his condition, he refused to foot the bill for his care. So the family’s obsessiveness about money continued. John Paul Getty, Jr. was a major philanthropist, to a slew of causes, and he was not stingy. “He had left three or four telephone messages on my machine in New York,” says von Bulow, speaking of the period between his two trials for attempted murder. "A mutual friend in New York called and said Paul wants to speak to you. I said, yes, but I’ve got quite a lot on my plate. And that sort of thing. They said, yes, but I think it’s in your interest. “That was after the first trial. That was, in other words, when I had been sentenced. I don’t know whether maybe he hadn’t seen it before, or whatever. He immediately offered to pay and stand bail. And did, for a million, and ultimately advanced some $2.7 million. And with the elegance that is his forte said, it’s what my father would have wanted. You know . don’t thank me. And, happily, the way things turned out, I was able to repay him once it was all over. But he never asked for it.” John Paul Getty III sued his father in Los Angeles, won, with the judge handing down a stinging rebuke to the father, and moved into a house in Beverly Hills that had been turned into a five-star pushbutton clinic, complete with a bloodbank, but worked strenuously toward a partial recovery, upon which he relocated to Europe. His marriage dissolved in 1993. When his father, now an honorary knight and a British citizen, died in 2003, he was living in a Victorian lodge in County Tipperary. Among his survivors are his half-brother Tara, who has shed his third and fourth names, and is now a highly regarded ecologist, working in Africa. Perhaps the Getty demons have been exorcised at last. Anthony Haden-Guest is the news editor of Charles Saatchi’s online magazine. Blood Bond Saga, Book 1. Vampire Dante Gabriel is starving. As the popularity of beach volleyball grew around the globe, many stars began to emerge. Sand or beach volleyball was invited back in 1915 on the majestic shore of Waikiki Beach, Hawaii. By 1924, inter-club contest were being held in places like California. By the time 1996 rolled around, the sport had been officially added to the Summer Olympic Games and thus garnered mainstream attention. As the popularity of the sport grew around the globe, many stars began to emerge. Female players like Gabrielle Reece, Misty May-Treanor, and have become some of the most popular athletes in the world. Despite its popularity, the sport has also received some criticism for skimpy uniforms which are commonly associated with the game’s female competitors. Some of the more culturally conservative countries believe that the skin tight , which often leave little to the imagination, are inappropriate. That being said, competitors like Olympian Holly McPeak have told outlets (such as ABC news) that they prefer the bikinis, which she said are practical for a sport played in the sand in the hottest months of the summer. The appropriateness of bikinis in beach volleyball is certainly up for debate. However, one thing that isn’t debatable, is that the women wearing them often look smoking hot. With that in mind, here are 15 hot pictures of beach volleyball player you HAVE to see! 15 Kerri Walsh-Jennings. 6-foot-3 beach volleyball legend Kerri Walsh Jennings is one of the greatest competitors to ever set foot on the sand. Her gorgeous blonde hair and upbeat personality have earned her the nickname, “Six Feet of Sunshine.” The 39-year-old native of Santa Clara, California has won well over $2.5 million in prize money over the course of her career thus far. Jennings shows of her impressive 6-foot-3 frame in this stunning black . The Californian displays the type of physique that requires countless hours of training in order to obtain. Kristyna Kolocova (seen on the right) is another outstanding player from the Czech Republic. She is also 29 years of age and was born in Nymburg. She achieved her greatest success when she was paired with Slukova at the 2012 Summer Games. The two blonde beauties qualified for group C in the Summer Olympics, which were held in London in 2012. They placed 5 th overall and were defeated by Jennifer Kessy and of the United States. 13 Gabrielle Reece. While Gabrielle Reece was without question an outstanding volleyball player, her undeniable beauty certainly helped to heighten her profile. She has modeled for several magazines over the years including Outside Shape and Elle , the latter of which named her one of the five most beautiful women in the world in 1989. In fact, the 6-foot-3 stunner even posed for Playboy back in 2001. She is married to professional surfer Laird Hamilton and has two daughters. 12 Misty May-Treanor. Misty-May Treanor is the Michael Jordan of women’s beach volleyball. When she retired from the sport back in 2012, she had captured 112 individual championships, which is the most by any female player. The 5-for-9 brunette who was born in Los Angeles, California was the face of women’s volleyball throughout much of her career. That very same year, she also captured a bronze medal at the European U20 Championships. These days she often competes with her partner, fellow Lithuanian, Ieva Dumbauskaite. In fact, the two ladies were nominated for Lithuanian Sports Person of the Year in 2014. However, they would end up losing to a couple of rowers named Donata Vistartaite and Milda Valkiukaite. In this photo, the young volleyball star’s 5-foot-9 physique is on full display as she lounges about in her figure-flattering bikini. Povilaityte will be a name to watch in the years to come. 10 Rachel Wacholder Scott. Rachel Wacholder Scott first rose to prominence back in 2005 when (along with her partner ) she defeated the legendary duo of Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings at the Huntington Beach Open. Volleyball experts consider her to be one of the few players who was able to hang with (and even defeat) the team of May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings. However, despite winning five events with Youngs, the two athletes parted ways in 2006. Interestingly enough, the reason for the break up was never made public. She would go on the pair with another well-known star in Jen Kessy. At 5-foot-8, Scott she is actually somewhat short by pro volleyball standards. That being said, she is clearly able to pack quite a bit of beauty into her relatively small frame, as one can see from this photo. 9 Shauna Mullin & Zara Dampney. Shauna Mullin (pictured on the left) is a British beach volleyball player who also competed in indoor volleyball. The 5-foot-10 blonde is currently 32 years of age. Mullin is best known for her appearance at 2012 Olympic Games where she represented her home country in London. Zara Dampney was born Christchurch, Dorset back in June of 1986. She is 5-foot-10 and among the most beautiful athletes that England has ever produced. Like her partner Mullin, the tall beauty is also best known for her appearance at the 2012 Summer Games. While the two ladies weren’t able to qualify from Group F at the Olympic Games, they did make it to the lucky loser match. Unfortunately, for Mullin and Dampney at least, they were defeated by a team from Austria. 8 Becchara Palmer & Louise Bawden. Becchara Palmer (the woman lying down the photo) is a 29-year-old Australian beach volleyball player who competed in the 2012 Summer Olympic Games. The 6-foot-tall Aussie star shows off her long slender physique in this breathtaking photo. In 2018, Palmer will be attempting to transition her career into a different sport. In June of 2017, she signed to play with the Adelaide Football Club. As a result, she is a part of the 2018 Australian Rules Football League rookie list. Louise Bawden (the blonde in a sitting position) is a 36-year-old Australian who represented her country in both the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games. The gorgeous 6-foot-tall blonde is among the most beautiful athletes her country has ever produced. The team of Palmer and Bawden had little success at the 2012 Olympic Games and failed to qualify for the pool stages. However, Bawden would go on to make it to the quarterfinal in 2016 with a different partner. 7 . 27-year-old Marta Menegatti is one of Italy’s hottest beach volleyball players in more ways than one. The 5-foot-11 brunette is a two-time Olympian who competed in both the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. The native of Rovigo, Italy teamed up with Greta Cicolair for the 2012 Games and had a very good showing. They won three matches in group F, before ultimately losing in the quarter finals to the Americans Kerri Walsh Jennings and Misty May-Treanor. Menegatti would return to the Olympic Games in 2016 and was originally supposed to team with fellow Italian Victoria Orsi. However, Orsi was unable to compete in the games, allegedly due to the use of a banned substance. Laura Giombini stepped in as a last-minute replacement. The pair made it to the round-of-16 before once again being eliminated by Walsh Jennings, this time with her new partner April Ross. 6 Doris & Stefanie Schwaiger. Doris Schwaiger, at 32 years of age, is the eldest of the Austrian duo known as the Schwaiger Sisters. She is 5-foot-8 and played with her sister Stefanie Schwaiger from 2002 until announcing her retirement in May of 2014. Stefanie Schwaiger is youngest of the two sisters and is currently 31-years-old. At an even 6-feet-tall, Stefanie is the larger of the two women. The Schwaiger sisters competed in both the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics. While they were never able to capture an Olympic medal, the sisters played well in both games. In 2008 the Austrians finished 5 th overall after losing to Wang Jie and Tian Jia of China in the quarter finals. In 2012 they were once again finished 5 th, after being eliminated by another team from China, Xue Chen, and Zhang Xi. 5 Katrin Holtwick & Ilka Semmler. Katrin Holtwick (shown on the right) is one of the best things to come out of Germany since beer and bratwurst. The native of Berlin, Germany has won an eye- popping two FIVB gold medals as well as five silvers from 2008 to 2014. She is arguably best known internationally for her playing in the 2012 Olympics. Aachen, Germany’s Ilka Semmler (pictured on the left) stands at 6-feet tall and is a great beauty in her own right. She is has teamed with Katrin Holtick since 2012. The two teamed together during the 2012 Games in London. Sadly, their Olympic experience didn’t last long. They were eliminated in the 1 st round by fellow Germans Laura Ludwig and Sara Goller. 4 Misty May-Treanor And Kerri Walsh. Anyone who has watched women’s beach volleyball, for any length of time, likely knows the names, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings. The duo is without question one of the greatest teams ever assembled. The two women first teamed up back in 2001. They spent two years on FIVB tour before signing with AVP in 2003. They went 39-0 in their first AVP season and were named “Team of the Year.” Walsh Jennings and May-Treanor are best known for dominating the Olympic Games from 2004-2012. During that span, they captured three gold medals and established themselves as the greatest team in Olympic history. After the team captured their 3 rd gold in the 2012 games, May- Treanor announced her retirement from the sport. Walsh Jennings would go on the capture a bronze medal with her new partner April Ross in the 2016 Olympic Games. 3 Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig. 5-foot-11 Laura Ludwig (on the left) is among the greatest female athletes the country of Germany has ever produced. The 31-year-old blonde captured the World Championship in Vienna this year (2017). She spent the early portion of her career paired with Sara Goller (pictured on the right side of the photo) and appeared in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. They finished 9 th overall in 2008 and were eliminated in the quarterfinal round in 2012. Ludwig would return to the Olympics in 2016 with a new partner Kira Walkenhorst. This time the German team would go all the way and capture Olympic gold in Rio de Janerio. Sara Goller is a retired German volleyball player who made a name for herself in the Olympic games back in 2008 and 2012 respectively. The 5- foot-11 beauty also captured several European Championships over the course of her career. 2 Jennifer Kessy. Jennifer “Jen” Kessy is an American who originally hails from San Juan Capistrano, California. The gorgeous 6-foot-tall blonde has had numerous partners over the course of her career. She has paired with big names like Rachel Wacholder, Holly McPeak, and Jenny Pavley. However, she is probably best known for teaming with April Ross from 2007 to 2013. The highlight of Kessy’s career came at the 2012 Olympics Games which were held in London, England. Along with fellow American April Ross, Kessy captured an Olympic silver medal. Interestingly enough, the pair lost in the gold medal round to another American team, Kerri Walsh Jennings, and Misty May-Treanor. Kessy’s partner April Ross would actually go on to team with Walsh Jennings in the 2016 Olympic Games. 1 April Ross. Costa Mesa, California native April Ross is probably the best American female volleyball player not named Kerri Walsh Jennings or Misty May- Treanor. She took the gold at the 2009 World Championship in and Silver in 2017 (in Vienna). The 6-foot-1 blonde is also a very accomplished Olympic athlete who has earned her nickname, “The Boss.” At the London Games in 2012, along with her partner Jennifer Kessy, Ross captured the silver medal. She would return to the Olympic Games in 2016 with her new partner Kerri Walsh Jennings. The two ladies would go on to capture a bronze medal, thus making Ross a two-time Olympic medalist. At 35 years of age, it is unlikely we will see Ross compete in the 2020 Games, but stranger things have happened in the world of sports.
