Phuket Thailand Open Fédération Internationale de Volleyball [email protected] Telephone +41-21 345 35 35 Today (Sunday, November 5) is the sixth of six days competition on Karon Beach for the US$200,000 Phuket Thailand Open, the 15th and final women’s stop on the 2006 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour calendar. The men’s international Beach Volleyball season ended a week earlier in Acapulco where Mexico hosted the final double gender of the season (October 24-29). · The Phuket Thailand Open is the 149th women’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Beach Volleyball events (open, grand slam, Olympic and Goodwill). The first women’s SWATCH-FIVB World Tour event was played August 14-16, 1992 at Almeria, Spain. · A total of 50 women’s teams from 22 countries have competed in the Phuket Thailand Open, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Cuba, the Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand and the United States. The 2005 Phuket stop served as a prelude to the 2006 season-finale where the competition was part of the Andaman Festival to mark the first anniversary of the Tsunami of 2004. Jennifer Kessy (now Boss) and Heather Lowe won the 2001 Pattaya events for the United States while China’s Linjun Ji and Whenhui You captured the Bangkok stop. Lijun Ji was 18 years old when she won the event to become the youngest player ever to win “any” international Beach Volleyball event. Eiko Koizumi and Shinako Tanaka captured Japan’s first-ever international Beach Volleyball gold medal by winning the 2005 Phuket event. The teams of Rattanaporn Arlaisuk/Manatsanan Pangka and Namphon Intuan/Yupa Puklongploy posted Thailand's best women's finishes on the SWATCH circuit with ninths at the 2000 China Open in Dalian and the 2003 Indonesia Open in Bali, respectively. Arlaisuk and Pangka competed in the most international Beach Volleyball events for Thailand with 30 starts, including 26 SWATCH events. Thailand women have compiled seven "final four" finishes at FIVB Challenger/Satellite events with four podium placements. Kamoltip Kulna posted 2005 Thailand Challenger/Satellite silver medal finishes with Usa Tenpaksee at the Bangkok Satellite stop and with Jarunee Sannok at the Phuket Challenger. Host Thailand entered six teams in the SWATCH competition with the teams of ninth-seeded Kamoltip Kulna/Jarunee Sannok and 32nd-seeded Yupa Puklongploy/Usa Tenpaksee both placing 17th in the FIVB’s women’s season-finale. Two women’s teams from Thailand have now each competed in four SWATCH stops in 2006. Kulna and Sannok will finish the season ranked 70th while Puklongploy and Tenpaksee are listed 75th. In the previous 14 seasons of SWATCH women’s play starting in August 1992, China had compiled only eight medals (2, 1, 5). · Today’s gold medal match will be the third-time that two Chinese teams have competed for a FIVB title this season. All three finales pitted Tian Jia/Wang Jie against Xue Chen/Zhang Xi. Xue Chen and Zhang Xi won the Shanghai gold medal May 28 while Tian Jia and Jie captured the title September 3 in Warsaw, Poland.
