Located on the east side of University Park Campus on Figueroa Street across from the Galen Center, it features three courts with sand from the U.S. Olympic Training Center. The palm tree-encircled stadium also has bleachers and a grass berm for spectator seating, a scoreboard and audio system, lighting, restrooms, showers, and multiple team storage areas. Ground was broken to build the new venue in July of 2012 under the generous donations of Jack and Helen Nethercutt and John and Me- linda Muller, and a large sum from an anonymous donor. The Mullers have a daughter (Erica) on the 2013 squad. A USC alumnus, Jack Neth- ercutt served as vice president of marketing and later President of Merle Norman Cosmetics in 1973. He left the company to pursue other ventures but returned to his presidency in March of 2002 and now serves as Chairman of the Board with his wife Helen as Vice Chairman. The stadium is named for Nethercutt’s great aunt and namesake of the cosmetics corporation, Merle Nethercutt Norman. Jack and Helen are active in Los Angeles non-profits and charities and are Galen Founders, Scholarship Club members, and Conquest supporters of the USC Trojan Marching Band. On Thursday, March 7, 2013, USC officially opened and dedicated Merle Norman Stadium in conjunction with the beach volleyball pro- gram’s alumni match. The Nethercutts were on hand to cut the ribbon with first Trojan head coach Anna Collier and athletic director Pat Haden. USC All-America alumnae and Olympic beach volleyball silver medalists Jennifer Kessy and April Ross christened the sand in their return to campus for the special match.

    Pro Beach Brothers in Arms 20 digbeachvolleyball.com | 2020 #1 Brothers in Arms In the long lineage of notable sibling beach teams, teenagers Marcus and Miles Partain are up there with the best hen it comes to discussing the greatest brother combinations in beach volleyball history, much of the oxygen in the room gets sucked up by the Crabb brothers. And rightfully so. They keep adding to their resumes with significant honors – most recently, Taylor’s 4-Star FIVB tournament with Jake Gibb (November in Chetumal,W Mexico) and Trevor’s sublime triumph at the Manhattan Beach Open last August. But while Taylor and Trevor won a few NORCECAs playing together, they could never capture an AVP or FIVB title, which, in part, led them to seek different partners. The Crabbs are not the only elite brother combo (see page 22) to seek the pro beach volleyball limelight. In fact, the most intriguing set of siblings may be the Partains, 19-year-old Marcus and 18-year-old Miles. Together, they were the youngest team to make an AVP main draw, which they achieved in Hermosa Beach, California, in July of 2017. Separately, Miles, at 15 years and seven I do (get excited when Miles months, became the youngest individual to ever make an AVP main draw. “ But it wasn’t until this past fall that Miles really broke out. The 2016 FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour schedule features four FIVB Grand Slams, four Swatch FIVB Major Series, the Swatch FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Finals, the Continental Cup Finals, the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games, 14 FIVB Open events, and two FIVB Age Group World Championships. The 2015 portion of the schedule was played in October and November and the 2016 portion of the schedule began in February in Iran and concludes in October with the World Tour Finals in a site to be determined. 2016 marks the 30th anniversary of the first FIVB Beach Volleyball event held February 17-22, 1987 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. · The double-gender $800,000 FIVB Gstaad Major is the 17th event on the 2016 portion of the 2016 FIVB Beach Volleyball calendar and 20th overall, and the third of the four Major Series. The FIVB returns to Switzerland for the 17th-straight season and 17th in Gstaad.
