  • Leadership Is a Team Sport
Edited August 12, 2008 Leadership Can’t Be Done Alone Rich Nathan August 9-10, 2008 The Making of a Leader: Lessons Learned from the Life of Moses Exodus 18 Several years ago I was in the Netherlands where I gave a television interview about Christianity in America. The Dutch found it really exotic that we had all these large churches in America and especially that one of them was led by a person of Jewish descent. While I was at the TV station a corporate executive shared with me a marketing study of over 100 nations and the social orientation of those nations. So, for example, they ranked nations based on that nation’s view of authority. Some nations were extremely authoritarian and other nations tended to be very egalitarian. One of the social scales that they measured people by was on individualism versus collectivism. Individualism vs. Collectivism Some nations exalt the individual. It is all about my rights. I need to express myself. It doesn’t matter whether what I say or do affects you or your children. Other nations are far more community oriented. The individual is subordinated to the good of the whole. Well, you can guess where America ended up on this individualism vs. collectivism scale. We were #1! We were the gold medal winners in the global competition on individualism. No one in the entire world, according to this marketing study, was more me-centered than Americans. Now, part of this may be our genetic history. Many of our ancestors came to this continent by leaving family, friends, and traditions behind.

  • Messianic Judaism in Antiquity and in the Modern Era
CHAPTER 1 Messianic Judaism in Antiquity and in the Modern Era David Rudolph When we speak of Messianic Judaism in antiquity and in the modern era, we are referring to a religious tradition in which Jews have claimed to follow Yeshua ( Jesus) as the Messiah of Israel while continuing to live within the orbit of Judaism. Com- munities of such Jews existed in the first four centuries of the Common Era and then reappeared in the eighteenth century. The aim of this essay is to survey this history up until the present day. Messianic Judaism in the New Testament Period During the New Testament period, Messianic Judaism existed in the Land of Israel, Syria, and beyond. Here I will focus on two communities that practiced Messianic Judaism: Matthew’s community and the Jerusalem community. In his published dissertation Community, Law and Mission in Matthew’s Gos- pel, Paul Foster describes an emerging “new consensus” in New Testament studies concerning the social identity of Matthew’s community.1 An increasing number of scholars are now identifying Matthew’s community as a “deviant movement operating within the orbit of Judaism.”2 The case for this view is made by Anthony Saldarini, J. Andrew Overman, Phillip Sigal, Daniel Harrington, Joel Willitts, and Anders R unesson, among others.3 Roland Deines, who disagrees with this perspective, none- theless acknowledges the existence of a new consensus emerging over three points: 1. The Matthean community in the last third of the first century CE is composed of mainly Jewish believers in Christ. 1. Paul Foster, Community, Law and Mission in Matthew’s Gospel (Tübingen: Mohr Siebeck, 2004), 78, 253.

  • Who Do You Say That I Am? Rich Nathan Christmas Eve – December 24, 2012 Advent: Questions Jesus Asks Mark 8:27-29
Who Do You Say That I Am? Rich Nathan Christmas Eve – December 24, 2012 Advent: Questions Jesus Asks Mark 8:27-29 People Magazine has its 50 Most Beautiful People in the World; Time Magazine has its Person of the Year; and Mental Floss Magazine claims to have something that trumps them both. In typical Mental Floss Magazine’s understated way, a recent cover reads: The 25 Most Important Questions in the History of the Universe. You ask: What could those 25 most important questions in the history of the universe be? Are they questions like: what is the nature of God? Is there life after death? Does life exist on any other planet other than planet Earth? But if you’re asking these kinds of questions, friends, according to Mental Floss Magazine, you’re thinking too small. The questions being asked by this magazine are the really important questions, questions such as: Why can’t you tickle yourself and make yourself laugh? Wouldn’t that be fun? You’re a little down and so you just tickle yourself. The problem is because your brain controls your movement, you know where you’re going to be tickling and how hard, so it’s just not that much fun. Or how about this most important question in the history of the universe: Why does Hawaii have Interstate Highways? The answer is that Interstate Highways is something of a misnomer.
