Growth in body length in terms of adult size in Scotinomys ......... 41 INTRODUCTION A systematic synopsis of Scotinomys in 1972 (Hooper, 1972) summarized the inform ation on morphology, ecology and distribution of the genus. The known populations were found to represent two species, S. xerampelinus and S. teguina, the latter polytypic. The species were shown to be allopatric, but there was evidence that where their ranges abutted they might be locally sympatric. Relation- ships of the populations in those areas were not understood. The data then available suggested that the two species were insectivorous, diurnal, communicated by high frequency sounds, and that they contrasted in several anatomical and behavioral traits. That systematic synopsis posed questions and set the basis for subsequent research. In areas of contiguous sympatry, are the species occupying different microenvironments? Do they compete, and if so, for what resources? How do interspecific anatomical and behavioral differences (e.g., in aggressiveness, thermoregulation, voice (Fig. 1 ), size of eye, and number of mammary glands), relate to altitudinal segregation of the species, reproductive strategies, and possible inter- specific competition? Information on some of the interspecific differ- ences is detailed elsewhere: temperature regulation (Hill and Hooper, 197 1); orbital region and size of eye (Hooper, 1975); karyotypes and accessory reproductive glands (Carleton, Hooper, and Honacki, 1975); and high frequency vocalization (Anderson and Hooper, ms.). CARLETON The present report is concerned principally with four aspects of the biology of Scotinornys reproduction, postnatal growth and development, behavior and food habits, and distribution and habitats. Secondly, it discusses factors and selection pressures whicli possibly were involved in the evolution of different reproductive regimes, behaviors, and ecologies of the species. MATERIALS AND METHODS The animals used in the laboratory werc obtained in Sher~nan live traps baited with peanut butter and rolled oats, and then shipped by air to facilities in the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology. They are from the following Middle American localities. Nicaragua: Matagalpa, 9 km N Matagalpa, Santa Marii, de Ostuma, 1300-1400 m, May 1969, 5. Panama: Chirqui , Rio Chirqui Viejo, 1800 m, May 1969, 1. S. .xerampelirzus. Costa Rica: Cartago, Volciin Irazd and Volcin Turrialba, 2700-3000 in, April 1969, 13; Aug~~st1972, 19. The animals were housed in polycarbonate cages (Maryland Plastics Inc.) of two sizes: 26.7 cIn x 48.3 cm x 15.5 cm for mated pairs and 21 cm x 28 cm x 16 cm for single individuals. White pine shavings covered the cage bottom to a depth of 4 cm, and cotton batting and small metal cans were provided for nesting materials.     AN EVALUATION OF HABITAT SELECTION AND AN ABUNDANCE ESTIMATE FOR THE ENDANGERED KEY LARGO WOODRAT by CHRIS WINCHESTER (Under the direction of Michael T. Mengak and Steven B. Castleberry) ABSTRACT The Key Largo woodrat (KLWR; Neotoma floridana smalli) is an endangered species endemic to the island of Key Largo. Despite protection of its remaining habitat from development, the population continued to decline over the last 20 years. Information on KLWR habitat preferences required to effectively manage the population is lacking, as is a means to monitor abundance. The objectives of this study were to examine habitat selection by KLWR at two spatial scales, the macro and micro-scales, and identify an efficient sampling design that can be used to monitor this rare population. Results of habitat and nest site selection suggest KLWR is limited by the availability of quality nest habitat and would benefit from the addition of artificial nest substrate and the continued protection of the forested uplands of Key Largo. Stratified random sampling was the most effective design and can be used to monitor the status of KLWR. Jensen Department of Biological Sciences, Emporia State University, 1200 Commercial Ave, Emporia, KS 66801 Oak savanna, once widespread across central North America, has functionally vanished from most of its range. Our objective was to quantify avian habitat associations across a gradient from open-canopy oak savanna to closed-canopy forest in the Cross Timbers region of southeastern Kansas. Using 2012 point-count data, we modeled species-specific detection (p) and occupancy (ψ) probabilities against vegetative variables using program Presence. We first established the best p predictors and then used these when modeling ψ. Of 28 species modeled, ψ for 7 was strongly associated with vegetative variables. Occupancies of Contopus virens, Polioptila caerulea, and Passerina cyanea peaked at intermediate tree densities or canopy coverages. Icterus spurius, Spiza americana, and Spizella pusilla occupancies were highest at low tree densities or canopy coverages. These species might benefit from reductions in tree density within otherwise closed-canopy forest. Moderate habitat relationships with ψ were found for three other species. Point counts will resume in 2013. Quantifying bird habitat use in oak savanna will be useful in guiding future savanna restoration for avian conservation. This determination was based on widespread declines of this species across the northern one third of its range. Numerous islands and corridors of rock in eastern, central and northwestern Pennsylvania that had supported woodrats no longer do so. This report includes working definitions for: suitable habitat, den site, survey site, rock island (habitat patch), colony area (patch cluster), and metapopulation area. Between 18 June 1999 and 15 June 2000, 74 potential woodrat sites (rocky islands) were surveyed for the presence or absence of woodrat signs. Of these sites, 60 had no evidence of use by woodrats, 8 had been used but are now inactive, and 10 were active with recent evidence of use by woodrats. Currently, the Game Commission woodrat database contains 950 records comprising 686 sites. Through 18 June 1999, PGC surveyors visited 431 sites with evidence of current (263 sites) or past (168 sites) woodrat use. These sites belong to 47 active and 55 inactive (locally extinct) colony areas. Based largely on topography and spatially related colony areas, 21 metapopulation areas have been designated.
