This may include completing that outstanding Master’s or doctoral degree, preparing a paper for presentation at an academic conference, writing a book or chapter in a book, authoring or co-authoring a publishable article to submit to an accredited journal, registering a research project or continuing with researching their respective study fields for new developments, new initiatives and new cutting-edge theories that will pave the way for lecturers and students to gain the knowledge and understanding needed to survive in an ever-changing and increasingly resources-challenged world. Educators may also plan to revisit their study guides and notes with ideas of improving on their performance in class, presenting paying students with more professional and up-to-date study material, and to attend to a number of in-service training courses to bring about a higher level of personal growth and development. If one considers the background of the real needs of our growing society, and the lack of skills and qualified individuals, then it is imperative that a positive attitude towards research has to be a first requirement for all educators. Such a mindset will result in action that will follow purpose with results that may boggle the mind. The National Research Foundation often laments the dearth of researchers in South Africa. All educators clearly have a responsibility to the country at large – and the people in it and the institutions they work for – to contribute to the research status of higher-education institutions to be at the forefront of research achievements in South Africa. Considering South Africa’s national and international research status, it is imperative that local research outputs are increased dramatically by all educators, which means that each and every higher-education staff member in this country should strive to produce at least one publishable and accreditable research article per year and, if possible, more. The research cause will only be advanced if leadership in higher education encourages and supports their academic and other staff members, including heads of departments, to initiate and organise their staff members into article-writing teams in order to give effect to a broad-based thrust to increase research outputs, initially by joint article-writing efforts, and later individually, which means that research per se will have to be prioritised as an essential function of all academics and educators, and all those involved in higher education. The JBMD is a vehicle for the advancement of research from a multidisciplinary perspective. Academics and other contributors who submit articles for publication in the JBMD will access infinite opportunities for personal growth and development that will also benefit our local higher-education research profiles in South Africa, as well as our international research standings compared to the rest of the world. As the Editor-in-Chief of the JBMD and this December 2008 edition being the last of the year, I wish all academics and researchers a successful academic and research year in 2009.     Notes and References 1 The Invisible Migrants There have, however, been several short articles on exiled and other South Africans in Britain which have appeared in journals and news­ papers such as Race Today, New Society, Third World, the Guardian and the Independent on Sunday (Kozonguizi, 1969; Lapping, 1969; de Gier, 1987; Cunningham, 1988). 2 Apart from the plethora of autobiographies and two Hollywood films (Cry Freedom and A World Apart), a series of interviews with South African exiles appeared in the British press: with Hugh Masekela (Johnson, 1990), Peter Hain (Keating, 1991) and articles on South Africans in Britain by Freedberg (1990), Sher (1991) and Fathers (1992) . In addition, Anthony Sher appeared in a film written by Alan Cubitt for 'Screen Play' on BBC2, The Land of Dreams (transmitted 8 August 1990), and Christopher Hope (1990) presented a Kaleido­ scope programme on exile for Radio Four (transmitted 16 February 1990). 3 There have, of course, been exceptions. In a book published in 1994, Robin Cohen traced the relationship between Britain and Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa and Rhodesia (Cohen, 1994). 4 None of these archives have been fully catalogued. Indeed, the mate­ rial in the IDAF and AAM collections will not be easily accessible for several more years. 5 The choice of 75 interviews seemed a reasonable compromise between my desire to obtain detailed accounts and a series of resource and time constraints. It is our pleasure to document all of the research and allied activities including journal articles published and, undertaken by the REGENT Business School for the period 2002 to December 2016 (A period of 14 Years). It was a difficult task to assemble the data because, this exercise was conducted for the first time and, some of the data was not easily accessible going back to the year 2002, or was not on record within the school. The initial years saw the school finding its feet and, it was a period when research was at a very rudimentary stage and level of development and engagement. i In spite of the difficulties encountered in assembling the data, it was an exercise and, effort that achieved the desired effect of obtaining the maximum data of most of the research conducted by the institution, including allied research activities, over a period of nearly two decades. It was a grueling exercise and we are happy with our efforts of creating a more than adequate data base for scrutiny by management, staff, and outside organizations and formations, including the regulatory authority in the form of the Council on Higher Education (CHE) and the Department of Higher Education.

    A Dialectic of Talking Forests: Trotskyist Ecology Through Afghan Sufi Cosmology Bilal Zenab Ahmed (SOAS, University of London (PhD)) This paper argues that a Trotskyist understanding of dialectics is well-suited to be combined with a few different intellectual mechanisms present in Pashto literature, oral storytelling, and Naqshbandi Sufi cosmology, to pursue a properly Marxist understanding of ecology and climate change. Such a model of understanding is highly appropriate to the local context of Northwest Pakistan and Southern Afghanistan, and can also potentially inspire new forms of dialectical understanding, elsewhere.I focus on the Afghan poet and refugee Pir Muhammad Karwan, who wrote a collection of work about the Soviet-Afghan War while living in Pakistani refugee camps during Taliban rule in the 1990s. Karwans poetry can be roughly classified as neoplatonist, due to its reliance on local Sufi concepts like maanavi and the imaginal plane. Perso-Arabic Sufi cosmology enables Karwan to work through an intellectual matrix that both abolishes and retools concepts like the self and other, technology and organic beings, human and nonhuman species, living and nonliving objects, embodied and cognitive knowledge, and sentient and non sentient natural processes. This is clear from works like The Chinar Tree Speaks, which discusses the Soviet-Afghan war from the perspective of human and tree, and The Talking Forest, which goes further to describe a forest not just in terms of its material content, but as a network of physical and emotional processes that feels, thinks, and speaks in its own spoken and embodied language.While Karwan is explicitly discussing the Soviet-Afghan War, its possible to use his perspective as a springboard for discussing the various impacts and processes involved in climate change.
