From award-winning novelist Mary Morris comes the remarkable story of a remote New Mexican town coming to grips with a dark history it never imagined.

In 1492, the Jewish and Muslim populations of Spain were expelled, and Christopher Columbus set sail for America. Luis de Torres, a Spanish Jew, accompanies Columbus as his interpreter. His journey is only the beginning of a long migration, across many generations. Over the centuries, de Torres’ descendants travel from Spain and Portugal to Mexico, finally settling in the hills of New Mexico. Five hundred years later, it is in these same hills that Miguel Torres, a young amateur astronomer, finds himself trying to understand the mystery that surrounds him and the town he grew up in.

Entrada de la Luna is a place that holds a profound secret--one that its residents cannot even imagine. It is also a place that ambitious children, such as Miguel, try to leave. Poor health, broken marriages, and poverty are the norm. Luck is unusual. When Miguel sees a flyer for a babysitting job, he jumps at the opportunity, and begins work for a Jewish family new to the area. Rachel Rothstein is not the sort of parent Miguel expected. Interwoven throughout the present-day narrative are the powerful stories of the ancestors of Entrada's residents, highlighting the torture, pursuit, and resistance of the Jewish people.

APRIL 7, 2020 @ 10 AM “The Aleppo Codex” by Matti Friedman

Winner of the 2014 Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature A thousand years ago, the most perfect copy of the Hebrew Bible was written. It was kept safe through one upheaval after another in the Middle East, and by the 1940s it was housed in a dark grotto in Aleppo, Syria, and had become known around the world as the Aleppo Codex.

Journalist Matti Friedman’s true-life detective story traces how this precious manuscript was smuggled from its hiding place in Syria into the newly founded state of Israel and how and why many of its most sacred and valuable pages went missing. It’s a tale that involves grizzled secret agents, pious clergymen, shrewd antiquities collectors, and highly placed national figures who, as it turns out, would do anything to get their hands on an ancient, decaying book. What it reveals are uncomfortable truths about greed, state cover-ups, and the fascinating role of historical treasures in creating a national identity.

How often do you get to hear music and then have a high-energy conversation about its role in historical traditions, its cultural influence, and its style and technique? Until the early twentieth century, the fiddle was the centerpiece of American folk music and folk culture. In this interactive session, Dr. Matthew Backes explores the origins and history of American fiddle music – covering a range of styles and modes of expression – and raises along the way big questions about musical tradition and music making.

Dr. Matthew Backes is passionate about stringed instruments; he started playing at 15 years old. When he’s not fiddling, singing, or picking mandolin or guitar, Dr. Backes teaches American Studies at Rutgers University. A historian who holds a Ph.D. in American History, Dr. Backes combines his passion for fiddling with his fascination with historical studies as often as he can. He also performs regularly with his bluegrass band, The Magnolia Street String Band.

Please register early ART TOPICS Sofonisba Anguissola and Lavinia Fontana

Presenter: Barbara Tomlinson, Ph.D.

To celebrate its 200th birthday the Prado in Madrid mounted an exhibition of the work of two prodigious female painters from the 16th century. Widely celebrated in their lifetimes, Sofonisba Anguissola and Lavinia Fontana were rudely forgotten after their deaths. Comparison of the work of these two extraordinary women reveals much about the possible career paths for women in their day. It also reveals the innate qualities that make one artist more compelling for us today. You will love Sofonisba and Lavinia.

Barbara Tomlinson, Ph.D. is an Art Historian who lectures frequently on a This program is partially sponsored by Jewish Federation broad range of art topics. She has been lecturing at the JCC for in the Heart of New Jersey approximately 20 years.

A Guided Tour at the Brooklyn Museum

Studio 54: Night Magic traces the radiant history, social politics, and trailblazing aesthetics of the most iconic nightclub of all time. Behind the velvet rope, partygoers of all backgrounds and lifestyles could come together for nights of music, dazzling lights, and the popular song and dance “The Hustle.”

Following the Vietnam War, and amid the nationwide Civil Rights Movement and fights for LGBTQ+ and women’s rights, a nearly bankrupt New York City hungered for social and creative transformation as well as a sense of joyous celebration after years of protest and upheaval. Low rents attracted a diversity of artists, fashion designers, writers, and musicians, catalyzing the invention of new art forms, including musical genres such as punk, hip-hop, and disco. In a rare societal shift, people from different sexual, sociopolitical, and financial strata intermingled freely in the after-hours nightclubs of New York City. No place exemplified this more than Studio 54.

Organized chronologically, Studio 54: Night Magic uses photography, fashion, drawing, and film, as well as never-before-exhibited costume illustrations, set proposals, and designs, to place the nightclub within the wider history of New York, from Prohibition through the 1970s. Blueprints and architecture models illustrate the club’s innovative development and creation, This program is partially while documentation of extravagant theme parties traces its thirty-three month run. The sponsored by Jewish Federation in the Heart of New Jersey exhibition continues through the years after the nightclub’s closure, showing the ongoing influence of Studio 54 aesthetics. Thursday, March 26, 2020 Bus leaves JCC at 9:00 AM; Returns approx. 4:00 PM $69/ JCCMC Member; $79/ Non-member Includes transportation, admission, guided tour and lunch on your own in the museum.
