William Ewart Gladstone Collection, The Huntington Library, San Marino, California. Provenance Gift of John A. Schutz, May 5, 2006. Processing/Project Information 1. The cataloging of this collection was begun by Mary L. Robertson in 2008, and completed by Gayle M. Richardson in 2010. Regardless of the cataloger, the standard authorized form of the names has been used on the folders and in the Finding Aid. 2. A large number of the letters and postcards were originally pasted down or mounted into albums by previous owners. The letters and postcards, in most cases, have been removed from the original pages and mountings; but, some evidence of the original locations (old glue, tabs, etc.) remain on the letters. It was decided that, unless it was a paper mounted letter, this original evidence would not be noted on the folders. 3. A large number of letters, by W.E. Gladstone, were written by his various secretaries and only the date, address, salutation, and signature were actually written by Gladstone. It was decided to note this on the folders but not in the Finding Aid. The letters and postcards which were written in the third person, and not signed, are noted on the folders and in the Finding Aid. 4. It was decided to leave the red gilt album (see Scope and Content Note, Item 5 below), intact and not disbind it in order to be able to distribute the manuscripts, letters, and photographs into the material in Boxes 1-15. Therefore, in order to locate all of the manuscripts and letters by Gladstone and other authors, it will be necessary to do a key word search of the Finding Aid to locate all material for an individual person. Related Material in the Huntington Library The Papers of James Bryce, Viscount Bryce, 1838-1922, complementary to the Gladstone collection, were donated to the Huntington Library in 2008, by John A. Schutz’s sister, Rosemary Di Salvo. Prof. Schutz also gave a small number of colonial American documents to the Library, now cataloged as part of the John A. Schutz Miscellany Collection. Biographical Note on John A. Schutz John A. Schutz (1919-2005), was a professor, author and long-time Huntington Library reader in colonial American history. Schutz began his teaching career in 1945 at the California Institute of Technology, followed by Whittier College, and, from William Ewart Gladstone mssGLA 1-759 2 Collection: Finding Aid 1965 to 1991, at the University of Southern California. After Schutz's death, the material he had collected over the years was donated to the Huntington Library, on May 5, 2006, as part of the John A. Schutz Bequest. The Bequest included the William Ewart Gladstone Collection, Henry Cabot Lodge Collection, and the John A. Schutz Miscellany Collection. Biographical Note on W. E. Gladstone William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), prime minister and author, was born in Liverpool, England, on December 29, 1809; the fifth child and youngest son of Sir John Gladstone and Anne Mackenzie Gladstone. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, in preparation for a future in the British political world. He married Catherine Glynne, whom he met in Rome, in 1839, and together they had eight children. Gladstone was first elected to Parliament in January 1833, and over the next sixty years was involved in the political life of Great Britain as an M.P., Chancellor of the Exchequer, Leader of the Opposition, and, four times as Prime Minister (1868-1874, 1880-1885, 1886, 1892-1894). He retired from politics on Mar. 3, 1894, to live mainly at his home, Hawarden Castle in Flintshire (now Clwyd), Wales, as well as to travel and write. In March 1898, Gladstone was diagnosed with cancer of the palate, and on May 19, 1898, he died from the disease at Hawarden. Scope and Content The collection consists of correspondence and a small number of manuscripts by and about British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, as well as photographs, engravings, prints and ephemera, collected by Professor John A. This series includes later reproductions of printed engravings of Gladstone, misc. material concerning Catherine Glynne Gladstone, John Neilson Gladstone, and Catherine and Henry Holiday. Also included are the provenance records retained by John A. Schutz during the acquisition of his collections; please note, these acquisition records include both Gladstone and Henry Cabot Lodge material. 5. Sr., while he was Ambassador to England, to give to his son, Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., supposedly to help him develop an interest in English history; the volume remained in the Kennedy family until 1996, when it was sold after the death of Rose Kennedy. The material in the album is arranged in chronological order, beginning with manuscripts and letters by W.E. Gladstone, then followed by letters by various Gladstone family members. The Economic Rape of America - Chapter Eight HISTORY AND THEORY OF TAX AND STATE You have sown much, and harvested little; you eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill; you clothe yourselves, but no one is warm; and you that earn wages earn wages to put them into a bag with holes. -- Haggai 1, verse 6 "... [W]hen it is no longer worth the producers' while to produce, when they are taxed so highly to keep the politicians and their friends on the public payroll that they themselves no longer have a reasonable chance of success in any economic enterprise, then of course production grinds to a halt... When this happens, when the producers can no longer sustain on their backs the increasing load of the parasites, then the activities of the parasites must stop also, but usually not before they have brought down the entire social structure which the producers' activities have created. When the organism dies, the parasite necessarily dies too, but not until the organism has paid for the presence of the parasite with its life. It is in just this way that the major civilizations of the world have collapsed." -- Professor John Hospers, 1975 The history of taxation is also the history of the rise and fall of civilization. It is the history of economic rape. From the history of taxation we can learn... TAX IN EGYPT, ROME, AND THE MIDDLE EAST Charles Adams wrote a superb book, Fight, Flight and Fraud: The Story of Taxation. It is a comprehensive analysis of the history of taxation in the context of the rise and fall of civilizations.

  • How British Colonizers Both Caused and Benefitted from the Irish Potato
“To Hell or Connaught:” How British Colonizers Both Caused and Benefitted from the Irish Potato Famine The Irish potato famine is well-known for the suffering and death it inflicted upon the masses of Irish peasantry between 1845 and 1848. The famine is often remembered and mourned as the tragic but unavoidable result of natural circumstances, and the blight that swept through the potato crop year after year is attributed as the sole cause of starvation. This misrepresentation of the famine’s history ignores the role of the British colonizer state in establishing conditions in Ireland that led to famine and exacerbating the suffering of the Irish through neglect. This paper explores the role of the British colonial government in Ireland in causing and amplifying the negative impacts of the Irish potato famine. Lewis 2 “To Hell or Connaught:” How British Colonizers Both Caused and Benefitted from the Irish Potato Famine Ruby Lewis PSU Challenge History of Modern Europe April 15, 2021 The Irish potato famine is undeniably one of the greatest tragedies in Ireland’s turbulent and bloodstained history. One million people—roughly one-eighth of Ireland’s Lewis 3 population—perished of starvation between 1845 and 1848, and another two million were forced to flee the country in search of a safer life elsewhere.1 Those who remained piled into disease-ridden, overcrowded workhouses or scraped out a living on meager plots of land. Too frequently, the famine is portrayed by historians as the inevitable outcome of population increase and unfortunate natural circumstances. In reality, the Great Hunger was the result of British conquest and subsequent neglect.

  • New Perspectives on the Eastern Question(S) in Late-Victorian Britain, Or How „The Eastern Question‟ Affected British Politics (1881-1901).1
Stéphanie Prévost. New perspectives on the Eastern Question(s) New perspectives on the Eastern Question(s) in Late-Victorian Britain, Or How „the Eastern Question‟ Affected British Politics (1881-1901).1 Stéphanie Prévost, LARCA, Université Paris-Diderot Keywords: Eastern Question, Gladstonian Liberalism, social movements, Eastern Question historiography. Mots-clés : Question d‘Orient, libéralisme gladstonien, mouvements sociaux, historiographie. In 1921, in the preface to Edouard Driault‘s second edition of La Question d’Orient depuis ses origines jusqu’à la paix de Sèvres, a work originally published in 1898, French historian Gabriel Monod postulated that ―the Eastern Question was the key issue in European politics‖ (v). In his 1996 concise introductory The Eastern Question, 1774-1923, Alexander L. Macfie similarly stated that ―for more than a century and a half, from the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-74 to the Treaty of Lausanne of 24 July 1923, the Eastern Question, the Question of what should become of the Ottoman Empire, then in decline, played a significant, and even at times a dominant, part in shaping the relations of the Great Powers‖ (1). Undoubtedly, the Eastern Question has always been deeply rooted in the intricacies of European diplomacy, more obviously so from the Crimean War onwards. After an almost three-year conflict (1853-6) first opposing Russia to the Ottoman Empire, then supported by France, Britain, Sardinia, Austria and Hungary, belligerents drafted peace conditions. The preamble to the 30 March, 1856 Treaty of Paris made the preservation of Ottoman territorial integrity and independence a sine qua non condition to any settlement – which was taken up in Article VII of the treaty as a collective guarantee.
