William Ewart Gladstone Collection, The Huntington Library, San Marino, California. Provenance Gift of John A. Schutz, May 5, 2006. Processing/Project Information 1. The cataloging of this collection was begun by Mary L. Robertson in 2008, and completed by Gayle M. Richardson in 2010. Regardless of the cataloger, the standard authorized form of the names has been used on the folders and in the Finding Aid. 2. A large number of the letters and postcards were originally pasted down or mounted into albums by previous owners. The letters and postcards, in most cases, have been removed from the original pages and mountings; but, some evidence of the original locations (old glue, tabs, etc.) remain on the letters. It was decided that, unless it was a paper mounted letter, this original evidence would not be noted on the folders. 3. A large number of letters, by W.E. Gladstone, were written by his various secretaries and only the date, address, salutation, and signature were actually written by Gladstone. It was decided to note this on the folders but not in the Finding Aid. The letters and postcards which were written in the third person, and not signed, are noted on the folders and in the Finding Aid. 4. It was decided to leave the red gilt album (see Scope and Content Note, Item 5 below), intact and not disbind it in order to be able to distribute the manuscripts, letters, and photographs into the material in Boxes 1-15. Therefore, in order to locate all of the manuscripts and letters by Gladstone and other authors, it will be necessary to do a key word search of the Finding Aid to locate all material for an individual person. Related Material in the Huntington Library The Papers of James Bryce, Viscount Bryce, 1838-1922, complementary to the Gladstone collection, were donated to the Huntington Library in 2008, by John A. Schutz’s sister, Rosemary Di Salvo. Prof. Schutz also gave a small number of colonial American documents to the Library, now cataloged as part of the John A. Schutz Miscellany Collection. Biographical Note on John A. Schutz John A. Schutz (1919-2005), was a professor, author and long-time Huntington Library reader in colonial American history. Schutz began his teaching career in 1945 at the California Institute of Technology, followed by Whittier College, and, from William Ewart Gladstone mssGLA 1-759 2 Collection: Finding Aid 1965 to 1991, at the University of Southern California. After Schutz's death, the material he had collected over the years was donated to the Huntington Library, on May 5, 2006, as part of the John A. Schutz Bequest. The Bequest included the William Ewart Gladstone Collection, Henry Cabot Lodge Collection, and the John A. Schutz Miscellany Collection. Biographical Note on W. E. Gladstone William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), prime minister and author, was born in Liverpool, England, on December 29, 1809; the fifth child and youngest son of Sir John Gladstone and Anne Mackenzie Gladstone. He was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, in preparation for a future in the British political world. He married Catherine Glynne, whom he met in Rome, in 1839, and together they had eight children. Gladstone was first elected to Parliament in January 1833, and over the next sixty years was involved in the political life of Great Britain as an M.P., Chancellor of the Exchequer, Leader of the Opposition, and, four times as Prime Minister (1868-1874, 1880-1885, 1886, 1892-1894). He retired from politics on Mar. 3, 1894, to live mainly at his home, Hawarden Castle in Flintshire (now Clwyd), Wales, as well as to travel and write. In March 1898, Gladstone was diagnosed with cancer of the palate, and on May 19, 1898, he died from the disease at Hawarden.
