Son mi fuente de inspiración y conocimiento principal como profesor de yoga y formador de profeso­ res, y les dan una expresión y un significado concretos al entrenamiento formal y a la instrucción como profesor de yoga que recibí en Yoga Works de principios a mediados de los años noventa. Lo que al principio era solo «ejercicio físico» y un reto de un amigo que pensó «mofarse de mí», se transfor­ mó en un ritual que me situó en la senda hacia una mayor comprensión de mí misma. Me llevó a honrar mi cuerpo y mi espíritu como nunca antes lo había hecho. Aprendí lo que significaba escuchar mi movimiento conectado con mi respiración. Sacó a la superficie cosas que me hicieron tomar más conciencia de mí misma a un nivel profundo. Antes del yoga estaba siempre yendo de un lado a otro muydeprisa y me sentía empujada a conseguir objetivos, a alcanzar una meta y a ganar (de niña hacía carreras montaña abajo). Luego llegó el yoga, y me llevó a un lugar en el que la respi­ ración y el movimiento me hacían ser quien era cada día. No era un movimiento físico que suscitara juicios y críticas hacia mí misma, al contrario, era un dulce amante de mi ser. Aprendí a través de las asanas de yoga que el cuerpo es un mapa para el alma y que el mío habla un lenguaje que ha sido creado para que lo oiga y aprenda de él. El cuerpo y la práctica de cada uno son diferentes en el sentido de que el lenguaje que el cuerpo habla es completamente distinto de una persona a otra, pero el modelo es el mismo. Cuando conocí a Mark Stephens ya llevaba casi veinte años practicando yoga, y sin embargo sabía que Mark sería un maestro importante en mi vida. Era, y sigue siendo, una inspiración para mí por su comprensión tan arraigada de los principios del yoga y de la relación del cuerpo con la asana. Pero lo que realmente me emociona de Mark es su relación con el espíritu del yoga y la profundidad de comprensión de la ciencia que subyace bajo la tradición yóguica. Comprende el modelo de lo que se requiere para llegar a ser lo mejor a lo que puedes aspirar como practicante y, especialmente, como maestro. Mark me ayudó a crear mi primer libro, Finding My Balance y gracias a esa expe­ riencia nos hicimos amigos íntimos. Me ayudó con las secuencias de yoga de mi libro, 9 y también con las fotos, y me proporcionó un espacio para tomar las maravillosas fo­ tos de las asanas en su nuevo estudio de yoga que estaba abriendo por aquel entonces en Los Ángeles. Nos reímos y nos divertimos muchísimo. Yo le ayudé a elegir los co­ lores para las paredes y el mejor lugar para una estantería de libros o para una estatua de Natrajasana mientras él me orientaba a entender que aquello que mencionaba en la secuencia de mi libro tenía una impresión más profunda de lo que había pensado. La profundidad de lo que estaba haciendo al dar a conocer el yoga con mi libro excedía el simple hecho de limitarse a mostrar las posturas de una rutina de yoga. Era un regalo que consistía en compartir con los demás la persona que yo era en aquel tiempo, quizá más de lo que comprendía. Estoy segura de que hoy habríamos elegido una secuen­ ciación diferente ya que soy distinta de quien era en 200 3. Aun así, Mark me ayudó a descubrir la maestra que había en mí y a compartirla a través de las asanas en sintonía con mi ser de esa época. Además de hacer lluvias de ideas para decidir la imagen del estudio y de cumplir con mis propios requerimientos personales para el libro que estaba escribiendo, tam­ bién tuvimos tiempo para hacer yoga. Con frecuencia permanecíamos callados durante horas con objeto de dejar que la experiencia de nuestra propia práctica individual hi­ ciera lo que fuera necesario para el cuerpo y el alma. Mark entiende la danza de lo físico con lo espiritual en relación con elyoga. Es un científico y, al mismo tiempo, un hombre espiritual guiado por su pasión por el yoga y la enseñanza. Es un maestro de maestros. Les da confianza a los estudiantes haciéndoles sentir que saben más de lo que creen y al mismo tiempo se asegura de que aprendan todo lo necesario sobre la ciencia, la historia y el misterio del yoga.

Now I am devoted to my Ashtanga/Vinyasa Yoga practice and my Pilates work to keep my body in shape and to add a spiritual component to my life. It has been very interesting to compare a movement practice that has been around for 2000 years with one that has been around for only about 80 years.     Meditation Interview Sarah Powers Interviewed by Timothy McCall, MD March 2004 TM: I am taping. Let me just start off – what is meditation? That’s maybe not an easy one to answer. SP: Right – we’ll just start off with the simplest one. I think it is both a practice and a state of mind. So it’s something that one can deliberately train in as well as developing a capacity to be more spontaneous in digesting the various levels of one’s experience in a non-reactive and yet very connected, responsive way. So as a practice it’s taking a posture that is mostly still, so that you minimize distractions and can then pay attention, not so much to the multitude of content around you, but to the way that your organism responds to all of the content, to the sense doors, as well as through memory and associative thought patterns. It is is a multifaceted training that is different in different wisdom traditions, but I think the similar thread in all of them is that it leads to a place of both restive calmness and a potent alertness. And in that state one can inquire into not only what they assume to be true, but to what is actually going on underneath our perceptual preferences and prejudices. We learn to pay attention with a kind of interest that is not resting on what one already knows, but is open to the unknown. So I think the practice moves one towards what we call meditative awareness, which needn’t be confined to a posture or a particular lineage, but is a way of being.

    “The History of Hatha Yoga in America: the Americanization of Yoga” Book proposal By Ira Israel Although many American yoga teachers invoke the putative legitimacy of the legacy of yoga as a 5000 year old Indian practice, the core of the yoga in America – the “asanas,” or positions – is only around 600 years old. And yoga as a codified 90 minute ritual or sequence is at most only 120 years old. During the period of the Vedas 5000 years ago, yoga consisted of groups of men chanting to the gods around a fire. Thousands of years later during the period of the Upanishads, that ritual of generating heat (“tapas”) became internalized through concentrated breathing and contrary or bipolar positions e.g., reaching the torso upwards while grounding the lower body downwards. The History of Yoga in America is relatively brief yet very complex and in fact, I will argue that what has happened to yoga in America is tantamount to comparing Starbucks to French café life: I call it “The Americanization of Yoga.” For centuries America, the melting pot, has usurped sundry traditions from various cultures; however, there is something unique about the rise of the influence of yoga and Eastern philosophy in America that make it worth analyzing. There are a few main schools of hatha yoga that have evolved in America: Sivananda, Iyengar, Astanga, and later Bikram, Power, and Anusara (the Kundalini lineage will not be addressed in this book because so much has been written about it already). After practicing many of these different “styles” or schools of hatha yoga in New York, North Carolina, Florida, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Paris as well as in Thailand and Indonesia, I became so fascinated by the history and evolution of yoga that I went to the University of California at Santa Barbara to get a Master of Arts Degree in Hinduism and Buddhism which I completed in 1999.

    VENUS SERIES- VEGAS HOT Cat & Cow Pose: 1.Start on your hands and knees with your wrists directly under your shoulders, and your knees directly under your hips. Point your fingertips to the top of your mat. Place your shins and knees hip-width apart. Center your head in a neutral position and soften your gaze downward. 2. Begin by moving into Cow Pose: Inhale as you drop your belly towards the mat. Lift your chin and chest, and gaze up toward the ceiling. 3. Broaden across your shoulder blades and draw your shoulders away from your ears. 4.Next, move into Cat Pose: As you exhale, draw your belly to your spine and round your back toward the ceiling. The pose should look like a cat stretching its back. 5. Release the crown of your head toward the floor, but don't force your chin to your chest. 6. Inhale, coming back into Cow Pose, and then exhale as you return to Cat Pose. Pranayama Breathing: 1. Stand with your feet together. 2. Inhale deeply through your mouth. Feel the air of your inhalations passing down through your windpipe. 3. Now slightly contract the back of the throat, as you do when you whisper, and exhale. Imagine your breath is fogging up a window. 4. Keep this contraction of the throat as you inhale and exhale, then gently close your mouth and continue breathing through your nose. 5. Concentrate on the sound of the breath, which will soothe your mind. It should be audible to you, but not so loud that someone standing several feet away can hear it.

Just because something was written as an “ancient text” does not always mean it has merritt . and in just the same way -- because some study proves some scientific “fact”, does not mean it is truth. For example all those years we thought saturated fat was bad for us . it is not! Studies were mis-read, mis-leading, politically adjusted, and “interpretations” seem to benefit some benefactor more than mankind. However I like this little blip from David Life on the very first sutra, in my simple words it basically says: From now on, just allow the yoga to arise naturally in you :) Excerpts from David Life's January 2014 focus of the month -- Jivamukti Yoga Atha yoga-anushasanam (Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra 1:1) Now this is yoga as I have perceived it in the natural world. Atha means “now.” But it’s more than just “now”; it means now in terms of “hereafer,” or “going forward.” The importance of that nuance is that it implies that whatever has been happening will now, hereafer, be different. The word shasanam can be understood as a set of rules, a discipline applied to us from the outside, a set of instructions for what we’re supposed to do next. But when we put the word anu, which literally means “atom,” in front of it, it means the instructions or ways to act that come from the inside.

Early teachings on yoga were recorded on fragile palm leaves which got lost or damaged in course of time. Yoga practice is believed to have its origin with the very dawn of civilization. Long before the religions or beliefs were created the science of yoga has its origin as believed. Prevedic yoga, Vedic Yoga, Preclassical Yoga, Classical Yoga, Postclassical Yoga and Modern period. Attempt has been made to discuss the concept, origin and history of yoga in this article.
