Inside Ecumenism
Volume XVI, No. 3, August 2009 Ecumenism by Sri Swami Satchidananda Ecumenism is Integral Yoga. Though we follow one teacher, we learn to respect all other teachers. The teachings may vary, but the central teaching is always the same—to know our True Self. That is the first and foremost goal. Once we know the Self, then it is easy to know all other things. Until we “know” our Self, all our knowing will be a big “no.” Because we try to know everything through our conditioned minds, all our knowing will be conditioned, prejudiced, limited, and colored. Real knowing is only with the pure, neutral, and unconditioned mind. We should have that clear and uncolored vision, and that is the purpose underlying all these practices—to remove all the coloring. The mind should be freed from all these limitations and preconditioned ideas. We literally should wash the brain. Wash it clean of all colors and conditions. Don’t merely switch from one prejudice to another; simply see clearly for yourself. That is the purpose behind all the teachings—whether they originated from Moses, Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, Shankara, Krishna, Rama, or Siva—to keep the mind clean. With all that, even though all the religions teach essentially the same message, we still can appreciate the differences—just as we would want a good garden to have a variety of flowers. If you have only chrysanthemums for acres and acres, you wouldn’t even call it a garden; you would call it a farm. Even if the garden is small and doesn’t have that many flowers, if it has a variety, you call it beautiful. -

Yoga Journal - When Yoga Becomes Psychotherapy 12-08-31 2:35 PM
Yoga Journal - When Yoga Becomes Psychotherapy 12-08-31 2:35 PM When Yoga Becomes Psychotherapy Learn to spot the boundary between guiding poses and guiding emotions. By Dan Charnas My mother is a psychotherapist. I became a yoga teacher out of that same desire to heal. I was intrigued by yoga's ability to deal simultaneously with body and mind: Emotional issues that might take years to tease out in conventional therapy were instead brought to the surface physically, and causes of physical disease could often be deduced through conversation. For me, the union of yoga and psychotherapy was natural. Students would come to my class not just in need of a physical workout, but often in great emotional pain. For those who stayed after class to talk, I'd spend time listening to their problems and trying to guide them on their healing path. Most times those remedies would be an exercise or meditation. But at other times, I'd speak to them with the bluntness of my teacher, Yogi Bhajan, the Master of Kundalini Yoga, who would often not even let his students finish their sentences before reading their energy and dispensing instructions. I've never gone quite as far as that, but venturing into "therapeutic talking" with my students scares me a bit, partly because it comes to me so easily. I am, after all, just a yoga teacher, trained only in the effects of certain sets of exercises on the body, mind, and spirit. I am not a psychotherapist. I don't have an advanced degree in psychology or social work, nor do I have any training in the clinical detachment that therapists use to guard the people in their care. -

Shanti Yoga Teacher Training Relax Deeply, Heal Completely with Yoga’s Quiet Practices: Restorative, Yin & Yoga Nidra & Moving Meditation by Debbi Murphy, PhD, ERYT500 Restorative Yoga The Goal is to tap into the Relaxation Response so your body can heal. Physiologic Aspects of Relaxation ⁃Roger Cole “It’s inborn, just needs to be triggered.” ⁃Our mission is not to create relaxation, but to allow it. ⁃Judith Lasater “people need at least 15 min to relax, it takes that long to get rid of stuff.” ⁃Secret is to set up the circumstances for relaxation. ⁃Goal to quiet the sympathetic “flight or flight” response/activate the parasympathetic…..both need to be addressed. ⁃Educate about basic health habits (caffeine, tv, etc) ⁃Stress = acidic blood which leeches calcium, savasana helps ameliorate. ⁃Stretch first. ⁃Timing…warm, safe, quiet, lying down (baroreceptors kick in when we lay down, sense pressure goes up so receptors feed back to lower blood pressure). ⁃Breathing - extended exhalation (4-8, inhale to exhale)….stimulates the relaxation response. ⁃Passive attitude, try to go 10% slower. ⁃Awareness - not aware we hold tension, with practice we can become more so. This is why we should always include some restorative practice in our daily routine. Judith Lasater’s Basic Sequence ⁃ Ground Rules: - Advance not by going further but by releasing deeper - Maintain soft, inward attitude throughout, especially in transitions - Although we’re trying to move into stillness, it’s ok to readjust - Maintain normal breathing throughout - Gentle Backbend “Savasana” - Supta Badha Konasana - each person’s will look different, support thighs, especially super flexible folks, this is not a deep stretch, it’s all about the release, even the core, pubic bone lower than navel, chin lower than forehead. -

The best yoga book I have HGJAzFUYP found.By Ruth Henriquez LyonThis book is excellent for a number of reasons. iVLqQU2RM The detailed descriptions of how to do the postures are wonderful. There are 1iH7tI0Mt excellent hints for progressing through difficult postures, including some really hL4HtVx4h helpful exercises for helping you get your hip joints in shape to do the lotus 7BMn0mEof pose. Erich really understands how the different poses affect the physical body JBiN4oHMu and the energy field, and imparts this knowledge clearly and eloquently. There is xFQsUJ0uU a whole section on breathing with the postures which I've not seen done so well NB0ohyisq in any other book. Also, he explains his concept of "lines of energy" which LbxJARCcm really bring the postures alive. A line of energy is a directional path of force EkMWIRfMU that moves through your body during a pose. For instance, when you are doing 8vwHRxmuY the Mountain (basic standing) pose, you allow two lines of energy to develop: jV28xP7hr one which starts at the navel and runs down through your legs and feet, txxA5x3Ke anchoring you down into the earth; the other lifting you from the navel upwards lzQ5QfZJs through the crown of your head.
