Mariners Winter League Report SEATTLE MARINERS WINTER LEAGUE UPDATE Games of November 10, 2014 GETTING HIS GROOVE ON: C John Hicks has hit safely in 4 of his last 5 games with 3 multi-hit contests. During this stretch, since Oct. 27, he is batting .529 (9x17) with 6 runs scored, 3 doubles, 2 home runs, 6 RBI, 4 walks and 1 stolen base. Overall Hicks is batting .333 (14x42) with 9 runs scored, 4 doubles, 2 home runs, 11 RBI, 6 walks and 2 stolen base in 12 games with the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League. Hicks has also been solid behind the plate, throwing out 8 of 17 attempted basestealers (.471), which is the 3rd- highest caught stealing percentage in the Arizona Fall League among catchers with at least 15 attempts (Pedro Severino, Mesa – 9 CS, 17 ATT/Justin O’Conner – 11 CS, 21 ATT). He also T2nd among all catchers in the league with 14 assists and has not committed an error in 105 total chances. BEAM ME UP SCOTTY: LHP Scott DeCecco has allowed only 1 hit (.077 AVG/1x13), while walking 4 and striking out 2 in 4.2 innings over 4 relief appearances with the Surprise Saguaros in the Arizona Fall League. DeCecco was a late addition to the Saguaros roster replacing RHP Taijuan Walker. LET’S GO STREAKING: LHP Mayckol Guaipe has allowed only 1 earned run over his last 9.0 innings in relief, loweing his season ERA from 3.18 to 1.84. During this 7-game stretch, he has limited opponents to only 1 hit (.037/1x27), while walking 0 and striking out 8. Overall Guaipe is 0-0 with a 1.84 ERA (3 ER, 14.2 IP) in 13 relief appearances with Caribes de Anzoategui in the Venezuelan Winter League. LEADER OF THE PACK: INF Carlos Rivero is batting .313 (21x67) with 11 runs scored, 2 doubles, 6 home runs, 11 RBI and 7 walks over 18 games with Cardenales de Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League. Rivero is currently tied for the Venezuelan Winter League lead in home runs (6), while also ranking 2nd in slugging percentage (.612) and 1st in home runs per at-bat ratio (1/11.17). JIMMY JIMMY COCO POP: LHP James Gillheeney is 2-2 with a 2.37 ERA (8 ER, 30.1 IP) in 6 starts with Naranjeros de Hermosillo in the Mexican Winter League. He has limited opponents to a .223 (25x112), while walking 5 and stirking out 21. Gillheeney currently ranks 7th in the league with a 2.37 ERA, while also ranking T5th in innings pitched (30.1) and 4th in WHIP (0.99). Also among starters in the Mexican Winter League he ranks in 2nd in lowest walks per 9.0 inning ratio (1.48) and 5th in fewest baserunners per 9.0 innings (9.49). NOT A BAD DEBUT: RHP Erasmo Ramirez made his 2014 Venezuelan Winter League debut recording a no decision in Lara’s 5-4 win over Magallanes on November 9. Ramirez allowed 2 runs (0 ER) on 5 hits, while walking 2 and striking out 3 over 6.0 innings in relief. Magallanes scored a unearned run off Ramirez in the 2nd and 5th innings. AROUND THE WORLD: INF/OF Patrick Kivlehan currently ranks T3rd with 18 RBI and 4th in runs scored (16) in the Arizona Fall League. Overall Kivlehan is batting .256 (21x82) with 16 runs scored, 3 doubles, 4 home runs, 18 RBI and 12 walks with the Surprise Saguaros. RHP Emilio Pagan is 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA (1 ER, 7.0 IP) in 3 relief appearances with Gigantes de Carolina in the Puerto Rican Winter League. He has limited opponents to a .160 (4x25) average, while walking 0 and strinking out 5. RH Victor Sanchez, who recorded his first Winter League loss on Nov. 9 at La Guaira (3.1,6,3,2,3,3), is 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA (8 ER, 26.1 IP) in 6 starts with Leones del Cadacas in the Venezuelan Winter League. LHP Kyle Hunter is 0-0 with a 3.38 ERA (2 ER, 5.1 IP) over 10 relief appearances with the Tigres de Aragua in the Venezulan Winter League. The NBA lockout is in its 139th day. By contrast, baseball's collective bargaining agreement expires Dec. 11, but a new settlement through 2017 is expected soon. That means MLB, which had eight strikes/lockouts from 1972 to 1995, now is envisioning 22 years of labor peace. I asked Bill Gould, emeritus professor at Stanford Law School who was instrumental in ending baseball's 1994-95 strike, why basketball can't figure out, like baseball, how to peacefully divide the wealth. Few know sports labor like Gould, whose new book, "Bargaining With Baseball: Labor Relations in an Age of Prosperous Turmoil" illustrates law's impact on baseball history. He pointed to three differences between the sports. 1. The baseball union has maintained more aggressive stances than the basketball union. "The lack of which in basketball led (Commissioner David) Stern, who's a lawyer, to believe he could push the union around, and he's been right, until now at least," Gould said. "Baseball owners learned they can't push these (players) around." 2. The NBA has more "marginal franchises with economically perilous circumstances" than MLB - including Sacramento, Toronto and Memphis. "I don't think baseball has any teams like that," Gould said. I mentioned the A's, and he called them "an aberration. They seem to be calculating that they can go elsewhere." 3. Race. "Look at who comes to NBA games and who has the money," said Gould, who's African American.

Due to renovations to the Peoria Sports Complex, Surprise is hosting 2 teams in this season. Both the Surprise Saguaros and the Peoria Javelinas will call Surprise Stadium home. A total of 30 games will be played in Surprise by the end of the season on November 14th. Surprise Stadium will also be hosting the 2013 Fall Stars Game which will take place on November 2nd. Tickets to games are $7 for adults and $6 for seniors and youth. The Arizona Fall League teams are comprised of the top prospects in minor league baseball. Each Major League team sends their top 6 prospects to participate. The Surprise Saguaros are made up of prospects from the Brewers, Indians, Orioles, Rangers, and Red Sox. The Peoria Javelinas are made up of players from the Astros, Mariners, Padres, Phillies, and Royals. Adaptive Recreation CRS will host the Arizona Special Olympics Fall Games for the 9th consecutive year, next Friday and Saturday, October 18th and 19th. The swimming competition will take place at the Surprise Aquatic Center, softball will be held at Surprise Farms and Bocce will take place at DreamCatcher Park. At the completion of competition on Friday, the official Opening Ceremonies will be held in Surprise Stadium starting at 7:00 p.m. The event features the parade of teams, the lighting of the Olympic torch and special guests.

    SEATTLE MARINERS WINTER LEAGUE UPDATE Games of November 17, 2014 AFL Recap: The Arizona Fall League wrapped up the season on Saturday with the Salt River Rafters defeating the Peoria Javelinas 14-7 in the championship game. The Mariners minor league prospects on the Surprise Saguaros ended the season with a 16-15-1 record, 2nd in the AFL West division. INF Patrick Kivlehan led the AFL with 22 RBI, while also ranking 3rd with 18 runs scored with the Saguaros. Overall he hit .280 (26x93) with 18 runs scored, 4 doubles, 1 triple, 4 home runs, 22 RBI and 14 walks in 24 games. C John Hicks hit .304 (14x46) with 9 runs scored, 4 doubles, 2 home runs, 11 RBI, 6 walks and 2 stolen bases in 13 games with Surprise. He threw out 8 of 17 attempted basestealers (.471), which was the 3rd-highest caught stealing percentage in the Arizona Fall League among catchers with at least 15 attempts (Pedro Severino, Mesa – 9 CS, 17 ATT/Justin O’Conner – 11 CS, 22 ATT). He also ranked 3rd among all catchers in the league with 14 assists and did not committed an error in 1114 total chances. 3B D.J. The basketball courts at the Three Star Park, located at 15825 W. Jerry Street, will be closed for resurfacing from October 17-21 and will reopen October 22. SPECIAL OLYMPICS. CRS and the Surprise Police Department will co-host the Arizona Special Olympic athletes, as part of the Arizona Law Enforcement Torch Run, this Friday and Saturday, October 14 & 15. The swimming competition will be held at the Surprise Aquatic Center from 8 am-3 pm each day while the Softball competition will take place at the fields at Surprise Farms from 8 am-4 pm. Opening Ceremonies will be held in the Stadium on Friday night starting at 6 pm with a parade of athletes and will conclude with fireworks and a dance for the athletes.
