A’s News Clips, Wednesday, November 16, 2011 Whodathunkit? Baseball a paragon of labor stability John Shea, Chronicle Columnist The NFL lockout lasted 136 days. The NBA lockout is in its 139th day. By contrast, baseball's collective bargaining agreement expires Dec. 11, but a new settlement through 2017 is expected soon. That means MLB, which had eight strikes/lockouts from 1972 to 1995, now is envisioning 22 years of labor peace. I asked Bill Gould, emeritus professor at Stanford Law School who was instrumental in ending baseball's 1994-95 strike, why basketball can't figure out, like baseball, how to peacefully divide the wealth. Few know sports labor like Gould, whose new book, "Bargaining With Baseball: Labor Relations in an Age of Prosperous Turmoil" illustrates law's impact on baseball history. He pointed to three differences between the sports. 1. The baseball union has maintained more aggressive stances than the basketball union. "The lack of which in basketball led (Commissioner David) Stern, who's a lawyer, to believe he could push the union around, and he's been right, until now at least," Gould said. "Baseball owners learned they can't push these (players) around." 2. The NBA has more "marginal franchises with economically perilous circumstances" than MLB - including Sacramento, Toronto and Memphis. "I don't think baseball has any teams like that," Gould said. I mentioned the A's, and he called them "an aberration. They seem to be calculating that they can go elsewhere." 3. Race. "Look at who comes to NBA games and who has the money," said Gould, who's African American.

  • Moneyball' Bit Player Korach Likes Film
A’s News Clips, Tuesday, October 11, 2011 'Moneyball' bit player Korach likes film ... and Howe Ron Kantowski, Las Vegas Review Ken Korach's voice can be heard for about 22 seconds in the hit baseball movie "Moneyball," now showing at a theater near you. That's probably not enough to warrant an Oscar nomination, given Anthony Quinn holds the record for shortest amount of time spent on screen as a Best Supporting Actor of eight minutes, as painter Paul Gaugin in 1956's "Lust for Life." But whereas Brad Pitt only stars in "Moneyball," longtime Las Vegas resident Korach lived the 2002 season as play-by- play broadcaster for the Oakland Athletics, who set an American League record by winning 20 consecutive games. And though Korach's 45-minute interview about that season wound up on the cutting-room floor -- apparently along with photographs of the real Art Howe, the former A's manager who was nowhere near as rotund (or cantankerous) as Philip Seymour Hoffman made him out to be in the movie -- Korach said director Bennett Miller and the Hollywood people got it right. Except, perhaps, for the part about Art Howe. "I wish they had done a more flattering portrayal of Art ... but it's Hollywood," Korach said of "Moneyball," based on author Michael Lewis' 2003 book of the same name. "They wanted to show conflict between Billy and Art." Billy is Billy Beane, who was general manager of the Athletics then and still is today. Beane is credited with adapting the so-called "Moneyball" approach -- finding value in players based on sabermetric statistical data and analysis, rather than traditional scouting values such as hitting home runs and stealing bases -- to building a ballclub.

  • Cuban Baseball Defection Experience and a Reevaluation of Baseball Diplomacy
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Santa Barbara Runners Left on Base: Cuban Baseball Defection Experience and a Reevaluation of Baseball Diplomacy A Thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in Latin American and Iberian Studies by Marcus F. Cuéllar Committee in charge: Professor John Foran, Chair Professor Sarah Cline Professor Cristina Venegas September 2014 The thesis of Marcus F. Cuéllar is approved. ____________________________________________ Sarah Cline ____________________________________________ Cristina Venegas ____________________________________________ John Foran, Committee Chair July 2014 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Although conducting and composing research is typically regarded as a solitary activity—and I certainly spent plenty of time cloistered in my writing cave—it would have been inconceivable for me to complete a project such as this without the guidance and encouragement of numerous individuals. I must first acknowledge the three individuals whose names appear on the preceding page, Professors John Foran, Sarah Cline, and Cristina Venegas, who graciously agreed to serve as my thesis committee members. Each of them juggles more projects and responsibilities than I can ever conceive of assuming, yet each generously granted me significant amounts of time to advise my research, as well as my professional future. I must extend extra thanks to Professor Foran who consented to chairmanship of my committee without hesitation and was always a reliable source of positivity. Professor David Lopez-Carr also deserves significant praise, as he was integral to the formation of this project and provided enthusiastic support as Chair of the Latin American & Iberian Studies Department. Likewise, I would like to appreciate my cohort brother, Angel Rodriguez, who was my biggest motivator and a fantastic drinking buddy.

Arizona’s Spectacular Sports From football to auto racing, Arizona is a sports playground Looking for a sports lover’s dream? You’d be hard-pressed to find a better location than Arizona, regular-season home to four major league teams, Spring Training baseball, record-breaking professional golf tournaments, three college football bowl games, four major NCAA universities, the 2015 Super Bowl, the 2015 NFL Pro Bowl, the 2016 College Football Playoff Championship Game and the 2017 NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four. Arizona continues to prove itself as a sports destination and has been named as the chosen location for the 2023 Super Bowl and the 2024 Final Four. The Big Four When the Arizona Diamondbacks arrived on the scene in 1998, Phoenix joined the exclusive club of U.S. metropolitan areas with professional baseball, basketball, football and hockey franchises. Currently, there are just 13 such communities in America that can make that claim. Baseball Arizona fans fell in love with the National League’s Arizona Diamondbacks right off the bat, and the team’s 2001 World Series win over the New York Yankees still ranks as the most significant professional sports victory in state history. The D-backs’ downtown Phoenix stadium, Chase Field, has become a visitor attraction in itself. Basketball Arizona’s original major league franchise, the Phoenix Suns, started playing in the NBA in 1969 at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Today, the Suns play at Talking Stick Sports Arena in downtown Phoenix. Football The nation's oldest continuously run NFL franchise (it got its start in 1898 as Morgan Athletic Club in Chicago) – the Arizona Cardinals began playing in Glendale’s State Farm Stadium, (formerly University of Phoenix Stadium) in 2006 after playing for nearly 20 years at Arizona State University’s Sun Devil Stadium when the franchise relocated from St.
