The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops established the Catholic Home Missions Appeal in 1998 to support the missions in America. Catholic Home Missions primarily supports those unable to oer their people the basic pastoral ministries of word, worship and service without outside help. It also gives grants to organizations and religious communities engaged in missionary work. The pastoral services include evangelization, religious education, ministry training and support for poor parishes. The Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands has received hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years from Catholic Home Missions.

Spelling Champion Aaron Harris, a sixth grader at St. Patrick School, outlasted 23 other spellers to win the St. Croix District’s Spelling Bee Championship on February 17. He continued to the territorial competition on St. Thomas on March 9, where he came in third place.

n January of 2011, Yasmine Haynes received the phone call that every I dreads. When she first saw the caller ID, and it was her son Nyim’s number, she assumed it was something routine. When she answered, a lady whose voice she did not recognize was on the other end.

“I said, ‘What happened, did Nyim leave his cell phone in church?’ I thought he left the phone and someone was calling me,” recalled Yasmine. “The lady said, ‘No, your son had an accident; can you come?’” Seventeen-year-old Nyim was found lying unconscious on a hill near his St. Thomas home. After leaving Confirmation class, he had gone skateboarding and suered an accident. Perhaps it was a fall, or perhaps a car had hit him. Nobody was sure of what caused the injury. All they knew was that he was in trouble.
