Cable tries to prevent Iceman This story has so much action it made my head spin. Extensive time-travel and frequent paradoxes are produced almost in every page, but the plot feels quite strong. A little confusing, but no one knew how to conclude this story, and they While he is responsible when it comes to time travel, this may be too important a moment for him to not go back and fix. I was growing attached to them, and it's a bigger shame that when they were around they didn't really get much to do. Apr 06, Adam rated it really liked it. This book had it all — action, heartbreak, lessons learned, and jaw-dropping twists and frankly, it's quite the high note for the House of Ideas to end their year on. I especially enjoyed the X-Force group coming in and their role in the crossover. Generally this is a strong consistent story that doesn't get too bogged down in time paradox logic, pays tribute to the progress and impact the young X-men have made since their arrival, and showcases a large cast, with many characters getting featured and scripted with their established tone and behaviour. You can probably also get a sense if CBH is for you by taking a look at some of my columns. X-Men comic books. The Hollywood Reporter. In Chicago, the young X-Men rescue a pair of mutant children from a mob of violent anti-mutant protestors and take them to the X-Mansion where they are checked over by Cecilia Reyes. Conner Variant Textless. Ahab attacks Atlantis and Jean's team desperately try to protect Cyclops while they wait for the rest of the X-Men to arrive and, although young Cable, who teleports in with the young Marvel Girl, Angel, Iceman and the others arrive to help, Ahab manages to kill young Cyclops with a spear. Cyclops challenged Ahab and died after Ahab tossed a spear into his head. Back at the Xavier Institute, the children are discovered to have no memories before appearing in Chicago, and after a telepathic scan Jean determines that their memories were thoroughly erased. Cyclops storms out of the meeting and is followed by his teammates. Cyclops has seemingly been killed by Ahab , but Cable removes his visor to reveal he was actually Mimic. Ed Brisson was chosen for the task and There was no particular reason this book should have been good. Domino tells Marvel Girl that she and her team intend to kill young Cable and she uses her telepathy to guide them to his location. Dracula X Target X. At Cable's safe house, he grabs two root beers from a mini fridge and tells an unseen guest that now that the young X-Men have gone back to the past it's time for him to come back. Pretty dang good, only have one complaint. X-men: Extermination Writer I have no idea how to review this one. Cebulski as part of Marvel's new Fresh Start initiative, with further details being revealed at the C2E2 convention in Chicago. Many readers took offense to Marvel forcing Iceman back to his previous status quo after such a major change was made to the character, even though the older Iceman still identifies as a gay man. At least it wasn't too generic Ahab was hell-bent on doing so and succeeded. I was growing attached to them, and it's a bigger shame that when they were around they didn't really get much to do. Recommended only if you have been following some of the recent stories about the young X-Men. He did, however, agree that "with so many X-Men coming back from the dead or being shuffled about, the mutant landscape has gotten pretty damn crowded in recent months" and therefore "getting rid of duplicate characters makes sense", summarising that "if this final arc was simply a way to sweep things aside to make room on the shelf, then writer Ed Brisson and artist Pepe Larraz handled things pretty well". I loved that last page. Among the deceased was Cable and Bloodstorm. The last page has one of their own return from the other side. He's about as interesting here as he's ever been, which is to say not. Larraz Teaser Variant. X-Men: Extermination [12]. Back in Cerebro, Marvel Girl lets out a psychic scream as she realizes Cable has been killed. I'm so glad to be wrong. Regardless of my thoughts on this particular story, Marvel does seem to be "cleaning" up the X-verse, bringing it back to its core roots, and this is one step along the way. Dec 11, Ross Alon rated it it was ok. Extermination , though, felt downright dangerous, which is exactly the tone these books have needed. Some will die, some will return home, but their story continues. May 07, GrilledCheeseSamurai Scott rated it really liked it Shelves: superhero , marvel , comics. Marte Gracia's colours make everything pop, and even the issue where Larraz has to step back to just do layouts and the actual pencils are by Ario Anindito looks amazing. None of the year long DC nonsense in fumbly attempts to clear up plot issues. X-men: Extermination Reviews Categories :. The hooded figure then retrieves Iceman and teleports away. No fun characters, not much logic just getting from point A to point B. Still, that first half makes this so worth it. Cable then sends the young X-Men back to their original time while he and Ahab return to the present day where Cable informs Jean that everything will go back to normal once the young X-Men close the time loop. Later, the X-Men find Cable's body and Rachel mourns over her brother. I especially enjoyed the X-Force group coming in and their role in the crossover. The figure declares that Cable has been relieved of his duty and kills him before tossing aside his gun and remarking that Cable should have seen that coming. He then reveals that Ahab is trying to kill them so that they will never be able to go back to their original time, therefore drastically changing the future to one where mutants have all been wiped out. Ahab knows that killing just one of them will disrupt the timeline enough to destroy the X-Men completely. Cable teleports the five of them away to their own time, leaving himself behind to fight Ahab. The only thing I didn't really like was the unceremonious murder of one of the O5's supporting cast, but they wouldn't have really served much of a role without them around - it still could have been executed a little better, but I'll live, I guess. By Thomas Bacon Nov 17, Some of his first memories include receiving a monthly subscription box with Amazing Spider-Man , the first part of "Round Robin: The Sidekick's Revenge," along with highly successful launches of X- Men 1 and X-Force 1. The X-Men comics have always delighted in using time-travel as a major plot device; it's the driving concept behind important arcs like "Days of Future Past," "Age of Apocalypse," "X-Cutioner's Song," and "Battle of the Atom. His job was to correct the timeline by sending the All-New X-Men back to their own times, and the very first thing he did was kill their protector; the older Cable , who he believed should really have insisted on sending them back long ago. I'm so glad to be wrong. Brisson makes good use of many characters-old and current-, kills a few, maintains tension throughout, delivers quite good cliffhangers notably issue 4 and 5 and very decently concludes what seemed like a clusterfuck waiting to happen. She then feels the psychic ructions of Cable's death and the team find his body but no sign of Iceman. The original team of teen mutants brought together by Professor Charles Xavier many years ago have been shunted through time to find a world they barely recognized but were determined to help. Return to Book Page. One of the things that stands out most, in particular, is the fact that the time- displaced X-Men finally make the realization that it's bizarre they're still in the future. Chief Creative Officer. Reading through this issue, it's increasingly hard to pick out legitimate criticisms about the book — it's easily the best of the miniseries. Fortunately for fans of the X-Men, there need be no pacing worries when it comes to Extermination 5. Open Preview See a Problem? • Myth, Metatext, Continuity and Cataclysm in Dc Comics’ Crisis on Infinite Earths
WORLDS WILL LIVE, WORLDS WILL DIE: MYTH, METATEXT, CONTINUITY AND CATACLYSM IN DC COMICS’ CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Adam C. Murdough A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS August 2006 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Marilyn Motz Jeremy Wallach ii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor In 1985-86, DC Comics launched an extensive campaign to revamp and revise its most important superhero characters for a new era. In many cases, this involved streamlining, retouching, or completely overhauling the characters’ fictional back-stories, while similarly renovating the shared fictional context in which their adventures take place, “the DC Universe.” To accomplish this act of revisionist history, DC resorted to a text-based performative gesture, Crisis on Infinite Earths. This thesis analyzes the impact of this singular text and the phenomena it inspired on the comic-book industry and the DC Comics fan community. The first chapter explains the nature and importance of the convention of “continuity” (i.e., intertextual diegetic storytelling, unfolding progressively over time) in superhero comics, identifying superhero fans’ attachment to continuity as a source of reading pleasure and cultural expressivity as the key factor informing the creation of the Crisis on Infinite Earths text. The second chapter consists of an eschatological reading of the text itself, in which it is argued that Crisis on Infinite Earths combines self-reflexive metafiction with the ideologically inflected symbolic language of apocalypse myth to provide DC Comics fans with a textual "rite of transition," to win their acceptance for DC’s mid-1980s project of self- rehistoricization and renewal.

  • Captain America
The Star-spangled Avenger Adapted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Captain America first appeared in Captain America Comics #1 (Cover dated March 1941), from Marvel Comics' 1940s predecessor, Timely Comics, and was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. For nearly all of the character's publication history, Captain America was the alter ego of Steve Rogers , a frail young man who was enhanced to the peak of human perfection by an experimental serum in order to aid the United States war effort. Captain America wears a costume that bears an American flag motif, and is armed with an indestructible shield that can be thrown as a weapon. An intentionally patriotic creation who was often depicted fighting the Axis powers. Captain America was Timely Comics' most popular character during the wartime period. After the war ended, the character's popularity waned and he disappeared by the 1950s aside from an ill-fated revival in 1953. Captain America was reintroduced during the Silver Age of comics when he was revived from suspended animation by the superhero team the Avengers in The Avengers #4 (March 1964). Since then, Captain America has often led the team, as well as starring in his own series. Captain America was the first Marvel Comics character adapted into another medium with the release of the 1944 movie serial Captain America . Since then, the character has been featured in several other films and television series, including Chris Evans in 2011’s Captain America and The Avengers in 2012. The creation of Captain America In 1940, writer Joe Simon conceived the idea for Captain America and made a sketch of the character in costume.

  • Shields, Grounds and Microphone Cables
Shields, grounds and microphone cables Shields, grounds and microphone cables By Bill Whitlock There is an old joke that the definition of a cable is “a source of potential trouble connecting two other sources of potential trouble” – that is worth chewing on. All signals accumulate noise as they flow through equipment and the connecting wires, and once noise has contaminated a signal it is essentially impossible to remove it without altering or degrading the original signal. For this reason no system can be quieter than its noisiest link. Noise and interference must be prevented from entering any part of the signal path, and the most vulnerable areas are usually the signal interfaces. The level of noise that is tolerable in an analogue pathway depends on many things but for a professional microphone – a primary signal Fig 1—The impedance of 3m (10ft) of 2.5 2mm (12#) copper wire source – most users would like it to be low enough to allow a dynamic range of >120dB. significant 0.015 Ω. • Disentangling Dense Multi-Cable Knots
Disentangling Dense Multi-Cable Knots Vainavi Viswanath∗1, Jennifer Grannen∗1, Priya Sundaresan∗1, Brijen Thananjeyan1, Ashwin Balakrishna1, Ellen Novoseller1, Jeffrey Ichnowski1, Michael Laskey2, Joseph E. Gonzalez1, Ken Goldberg1 Abstract— Disentangling two or more cables requires many steps to remove crossings between and within cables. We formal- ize the problem of disentangling multiple cables and present an algorithm, Iterative Reduction Of Non-planar Multiple cAble kNots (IRON-MAN), that outputs robot actions to remove crossings from multi-cable knotted structures. We instantiate this algorithm with a learned perception system, inspired by prior work in single-cable untying that given an image input, can disentangle two-cable twists, three-cable braids, and knots of two or three cables, such as overhand, square, carrick bend, sheet bend, crown, and fisherman’s knots. IRON-MAN keeps track of task-relevant keypoints corresponding to target cable endpoints and crossings and iteratively disentangles the cables by identifying and undoing crossings that are critical to knot structure. Using a da Vinci surgical robot, we experimentally evaluate the effectiveness of IRON-MAN on untangling multi- cable knots of types that appear in the training data, as well as generalizing to novel classes of multi-cable knots. Results suggest that IRON-MAN is effective in disentangling knots involving up to three cables with 80.5% success and generalizing to knot types that are not present during training, with cables of both distinct or identical colors. Fig. 1: Overview of IRON-MAN: IRON-MAN (Iterative Reduction Of Non-planar Multiple cAble kNots) is an algorithm for disentanglement of I.

CREATING A SUPERHEROINE: A RHETORICAL ANALYSIS OF THE X-MEN COMIC BOOKS by Tonya R. Powers A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS Major Subject: Communication West Texas A&M University Canyon, Texas August, 2016 Approved: __________________________________________________________ [Chair, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] __________________________________________________________ [Member, Thesis Committee] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Head, Major Department] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Fine Arts and Humanities] [Date] ____________________________________________________ [Dean, Graduate School] [Date] ii ABSTRACT This thesis is a rhetorical analysis of a two-year X-Men comic book publication that features an entirely female cast. This research was conducted using Kenneth Burke’s theory of terministic screens to evaluate how the authors and artists created the comic books. Sonja Foss’s description of cluster criticism is used to determine key terms in the series and how they were contributed to the creation of characters. I also used visual rhetoric to understand how comic book structure and conventions impacted the visual creation of superheroines. The results indicate that while these superheroines are multi- dimensional characters, they are still created within a male standard of what constitutes a hero. The female characters in the series point to an awareness of diversity in the comic book universe. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I wish to thank my thesis committee chair, Dr. Hanson, for being supportive of me within the last year. Your guidance and pushes in the right direction has made the completion of this thesis possible. You make me understand the kind of educator I wish to be. You would always reply to my late-night emails as soon as you could in the morning.
