After I talked to all of these people and others who were part of her life, after I read and watched interviews, listened to her music, visited Internet sites, and talked to her fans, this book was born. It aims to be more than just a summary, which would always be incomplete, of the events that formed Shakira. I hope to have shed some light on the history of this singer songwriter who, beyond fashion and awards, is transforming the music scene with the force of an earthquake and promises to become the most successful crossover act in history. My thanks to the executives at Simon & Schuster, especially my TO MARK, editor, Marcela Landres, who shepherded and supported this project so well, and to my literary agent Laura Dail, who recommended me for the task and who was always close by during the research and for making sense of what surrounds me. writing. I would also like to thank Dolores Prida for her valuable help and wise advice, and Francheska Farinacci for her fine translation. WHERE IS SHAKIRA Discography Awards and Recognitions Shakira on the Web Bibliography INTRODUCTION When Shakira arrived at the first annual Latin Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, with her blonde hair and a green dress, some of the people at tending had barely heard of her. But by the end of the night those same people would remember her forever. All she had to do was step on stage and give that defiant look with her gypsy eyes while moving her hips sensually to the rhythm of the dumbek, the drum of her ancestors, to take over the audience. Nobody could take their eyes off this woman who seemed possessed by ancient spirits and sang in Arabic with the voice of a veteran rocker. That night, Shakira made it clear why Time magazine had put her on the cover above the headline "Era of the Rock era," why Gabriel García Márquez had interviewed her for his publica tion Cambio, and why she has sold millions of records worldwide. But who is this young Colombian with the Arabic name ? Who is this performer who belly dances and composes, who can sell out stadiums and launch fashion trends? Before 2001, few of us in the United States knew who she was, but throughout Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, and even Japan, her songs have repeatedly reached number one and she served as her own very first one. Ironically, Shakira never and her videos have occupied the top spots on MN for months. west coast music Impulse SPECIAL/PROTOCOL DANCES: Please note that we will need to have your special dance requests (i.e. First Dance, Father/Daughter Dance, etc) FOUR WEEKS prior to your event so that we can confirm the band will be able to perform the song(s) and so that we have enough time to locate sheet music and an audio sample of the song. In cases where sheet music is not available or an arrangement for the full band is needed, this gives us time to properly prepare the music. General song requests are not required, as many of our clients simply ask that the band read & react based on their guest's dance response. Our clients that do provide us with song requests do so in varying degrees. Most clients give us a handful of songs or artists they like and want played or avoided. If you wish to maintain the highest degree of control (allowing the band to only play within the margin of songs requested) we would ask for a minimum of 80 requests from the band’s songlist. 'LOW ROTATION' REQUESTS: General requests chosen from the 'Low Rotation' section of this songlist (pages 7-12) must be submitted at least FOUR WEEKS prior to your event. The songs from the 'Low Rotation' section are not in the current ‘IMPULSE’ song rotation, so the band would need extra preparation time. • Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”-- Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine (1987) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Ilan Stavans (Guest Post)*
“Rhythm Is Gonna Get You”-- Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine (1987) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Ilan Stavans (guest post)* “Let It Loose” album cover 45rpm single Enrique Garcia Gloria Estefan’s “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You,” which represents the apex of Cuban influence on American R&B, also serves as a thermometer for Latino assimilation to the United States, especially in Miami, which was always Estefan’s base. The song came about shortly before her bus accident in 1990, as she was touring, an event that marked her profoundly, physically and creatively. As such, it represents her “early” style and approach, in comparison with a later period in which Estefan would invoke her Cuban roots and upbringing in more concrete fashion. Along with “Conga,” “Bad Boy,” “Get on Your Feet,” “Party Time,” and about half a dozen more, the song made Estefan internationally known. Performed together with Estefan’s group, Miami Sound Machine, founded by her husband Emilio Estefan, it is part of the immensely successful album “Let It Loose” (1987), which went multi-platinum. The song itself was Top 5 on the US Billboard Top 100. It came to define R&B and become a staple of the post-disco disco era because of its eminently danceable qualities. Indeed, most people associate it with an Americanized version of Latin twirl. Estefan is originally from Havana (she was born in 1957). She and her family—her father was a motor escort for dictator Fulgencio Batista’s wife—were part of a massive wave of mostly upper- and middle-class Cubans who moved to the United States in the 1960s, absconding Fidel Castro’s Communist regime.

  • The Culture of Democratic Spain and the Issue of Torture
© 8 The Culture of Democratic Spain and the Issue of Torture Luis Martín-Estudillo The issue of torture has been both a problem in terms of human rights and one closely tied to international prestige and cultural polemics for the last four decades in Spain. While denunciations of tortures inflicted on enemies of the Franco regime were an important part of the opposition’s public opinion campaigns during the dictatorship, after the general’s death in 1975 the persistence of tortures practiced by the various police forces became a delicate political question for the newly established parliamentary monarchy. The transition to democracy during the 1970s coincided with two major developments that affected the social perception of torture. One was very visible; it could be summarized as the coming of age of international human rights monitoring. The other went explicably unnoticed, as it had to do with certain “reasons of state” and practices that must remain secret in order to function within their own logic: I am referring to the change in torture practices from “scarring” (those that leave traces on the victim’s body) to “clean” (those which do not) techniques at a global level, as Darius Rejali has documented. In that context, accusations of torture undermined officials’ efforts to promote a “normalized” image of Spain as a “wholly European” (i.e., “civilized”) nation that sought full integration into the group of advanced democracies by leaving behind the repressive policies of the Francoist dictatorship.1 The presence of torture as one of the hot topics in public debate, as it was during the 1970s thanks to the struggle of a minority of opposition politicians and intellectuals, was not compatible with the image that needed to be constructed to achieve identification with the targeted European ideal.
