STATISTICAL YEARBOOK 2019 Welcome to the 2019 BFI Statistical Yearbook. Compiled by the Research and Statistics Unit, this Yearbook presents the most comprehensive picture of film in the UK and the performance of British films abroad during 2018. This publication is one of the ways the BFI delivers on its commitment to evidence-based policy for film. We hope you enjoy this Yearbook and find it useful. 3 The BFI is the lead organisation for film in the UK. Founded in 1933, it is a registered charity governed by Royal Charter. In 2011, it was given additional responsibilities, becoming a Government arm’s-length body and distributor of Lottery funds for film, widening its strategic focus. The BFI now combines a cultural, creative and industrial role. The role brings together activities including the BFI National Archive, distribution, cultural programming, publishing and festivals with Lottery investment for film production, distribution, education, audience development, and market intelligence and research. The BFI Board of Governors is chaired by Josh Berger. We want to ensure that there are no barriers to accessing our publications. As a white scholar, I am conscious of my privileged position within an academic setting in having this opportunity. I write with a platform that several of these women, and many others who might have had such a platform themselves in a fairer society, lack access to. Aware of this position of power and privilege that I occupy, I state here, at the outset, that I do not claim to speak for or on behalf of the trans women of colour in this thesis.

  • FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 56 Days That Will Rock Your Cinema World!
10 JAN 20 5 MAR 20 1 | 10 JAN 20 - 5 MAR 20 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECINEMA.COM FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT 56 days that will rock your cinema world! Well, here we are again… it’s Awards season! I was reminded of such by a communication that came my way from AMPAS (the Oscar® people) listing nine categories’ shortlists of potential nominees. Now, they’ve been doing that shortlist thing with Foreign Language films for quite some time – there’s a lot of films out there in the world, it would be rather too much for the Academy members to have to watch them all! – but, to my knowledge, they’ve not before done it with any other category. It may be it’s for the same reason of sheer volume as above, but I guess what it also does is allows a greater number of films a reason to mention their Academy Award status in their advertising. I can see it now, “Academy Award Nomination shortlisted…” written on the poster. Where will it all end I wonder, “Academy Award Nomination eligible…”? As luck would have [nothing to do with] it, one of the films on the Foreign Language short list – which at this point in time seems the overwhelming favourite – is Bong Joon Ho’s utterly brilliant Parasite, which takes its place alongside a programme of films that is simplythe best line-up of new cinema I’ve seen in a long time. There’s not just the aforementioned South Korean masterpiece, there’s Sam Mendes’ extraordinary ‘one-take’ wonder 1917 (google ‘1917 behind the scenes featurette’ and prepare to simply have to see this film); Taika (‘Wilderpeople’) Waititi’s WWII, Nazi Germany-set, Jojo Rabbit; Armando Iannucci’s breathless Dickens, The Personal History of David Copperfield; Robert Egger’s uniquely bonkers, fog-bound The Lighthouse; Kidman, Robbie and Theron taking on the Fox News patriarchy in Bombshell; and to cap it all off, and possibly the best of the lot, Céline Sciamma’sexquisite Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

Community Exhibitor Survey 2018 — 2019 Table of Contents Table of Contents 1 Summary 2 Introduction 4 Background 4 Aims 4 Timescale 4 Sector 4 Methods 4 Results 5 Administration 6 Audience, Membership and Admission 8 Provision 13 Programming 15 Cinema For All 19 The Sector 24 1 Summary Survey The questionnaire was sent out to all full, associate and affiliate Cinema For All members and other community cinema organisations on the Cinema For All mailing list. 137 organisations responded to the survey. Administration • 80% of respondents were established in the year 2000 or later. • 82% of respondents describe themselves as a Community Cinema or Film Society. • Community Cinemas and Film Societies were seen as different by 60% of respondents, with the main cited differences being in administration (open vs membership organisations) and programming. • Staff or volunteers from just under two thirds (64%) of responding organisations attended an event aimed at film exhibitors. • 18% of respondents had paid members of staff. • Most respondents (80%) used just one venue for all of their screenings, and almost half (45%) of respondents’ primary venues were village halls or community centres. • Over a third (35%) of responding groups purchased equipment during the relevant period. Audience, Membership and Admission • The average audience size was 56, which is a decrease from 75 reported in both 2009 and 2014. • Despite the lower average audience size, admissions seem to have risen; the average total number of admissions this year was 2,383, up from 1,360 in 2009 and 1,891 in 2014. • Just 15% of groups reported a decrease in their audience size.

  • Memory House's
SYNOPSIS Modern day Brazil, but lost in time. Cristovam, a native Black man from the rural North, moves to a Southern town, a strange sort of Austrian colony, to work in a milk factory. Confronted with xenophobic conservative people, he feels isolated and estranged from the white world. He discovers an abandoned house, filled with objects and memorabilia reminding him of his origins. He settles in, reconnecting with his roots. As if this memory house were alive, more objects start to appear. Slowly, Cristovam begins a metamorphosis. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT The surreal invasion of the invisible into the visible has always been present in my films. Different times and dimensions meet within one another in the same scene. Cristovam seeks his origins, finding traces of his ancestry. The figure of the old black man is mythical in Brazilian popular culture, as a spiritual presence for the humblest. The visual ef- fects in the movie, especially those on Cristovam’s face, with his skin and soul marked by age, are a projection of strength coming from his distant ancestors, an embodiment of the past, with a spiritual dimension. Facing a conservative society, he witnesses the intolerance and prejudices of the past shaping current politicians, businessmen and real separatist movements. There is a distinct division in Brazilian society between a richer South, identifying with its Eu- ropean origins, and a poorer North, populated by descendants of African slaves and Indigenous tribes. The film portrays the revolutionary figure of the Northern man who incarnates the spirit of the “Boiadeiro” (Brazilian cowboy). Cristovam seeks revenge to exculpate his sins as he feels res- ponsible for an intolerant society.

  • CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS of FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT Solved! the Mystery Motors of the Autosafe “Skypark”…
2 MAR 18 5 APR 18 1 | 2 MAR 18 - 5 APR 18 88 LOTHIAN ROAD | FILMHOUSECinema.COM CELEBRATING FORTY YEARS OF FILMS WORTH TALKING ABOUT Solved! The Mystery Motors of the Autosafe “SkyPark”… Huge thanks to a number of you out there who sent me a link to the BBC News article that finally puts the issue I’ve been bleating on about for months (see Filmhouse December and February monthly programme introductions) to bed. Turns out the eight cars that have been trapped in the failed then abandoned automated car park (which is currently being dismantled behind our offices) since it closed in the early 2000s were only ever old bangers brought in to test the automatic parking machinery! Phew! Glad to have gotten to the bottom of that one… Our March programme, as is customary for the time of year, is replete with Oscar® hopefuls, it now being the turn of Lady Bird, Phantom Thread (in 70mm!), A Fantastic Woman, Palme d’Or winner The Square, and The Shape of Water, which continues from February. Awards season is, though, nearly over, as is evidenced by a slew of new films too new to qualify for consideration this year: Lynne Ramsay’s brilliant You Were Never Really Here; Warwick (Samson & Delilah) Thornton’s stunning Aussie ‘western’, Sweet Country, and Wes Anderson’s fabulous Isle of Dogs. And you know what, looking at that list, I’m going to stick my neck out and say that I’m not entirely sure I have ever seen a better line-up of new release cinema, at any one cinema, ever.
