M. H. RATZLAFF: The Superficial Lymphatic System of the Cat 151 Summary Four examples of severe chylous lymph effusions into serous cavities are reported. In each case there was an associated lymphocytopenia. This resembled and confirmed the findings noted in experimental lymph drainage from cannulated thoracic ducts in which the subject invariably devdops lymphocytopenia as the lymph is permitted to drain. Each of these patients had com munications between the lymph structures and the serous cavities. In two instances actual leakage of the lymphography contrrult material was demonstrated. The performance of repeated thoracenteses and paracenteses in the presenc~ of communications between the lymph structures and serous cavities added to the effect of converting the. situation to one similar to thoracic duct drainage .The progressive immaturity of the lymphocytes which was noted in two patients lead to the problem of differentiating them from malignant cells. The explanation lay in the known progressive immaturity of lymphocytes which appear when lymph drainage persists. The lymphatics of the head and neck area consist of superficial and deep nodes groups, which are connected by numerous small vessels, giving rise to a complex subcutaneous and deep lymphatic network. The deep cervical lymph nodes, mainly placed along the jugulo carotid vessels, have been intensively reviewed in radiology and classified by well- established levels. The more superficial groups, notably the occipital, parotid, mastoid, facial and superficial cervical lymph nodes groups were not well recognized in the radiology literature, probably because of their less frequent involvement in the more predominant pharyngeal and laryngeal mucosal malignancy, and seem to have been forgotten. We present a review of the anatomy of those lymph nodes groups, including their location, afferent and efferent drainage tracts accompanied by cross-sectional imaging CT examples. The most superficial ones, namely the occipital, parotid, facial and mastoid groups, situated at the junction of head and neck, form a veritable lymphoid collar that he designated as pericervical lymphoid ring (Figure 1a) [1, 2]. -

Abstract Objective: To show the morphometric patterns of lymph nodes of the head and neck, evaluating their number, shape, dimensions, hilum, and cortex, through the use of ultrasound examination of the neck. Materials and Methods: We analyzed 400 right and left lymph nodes in a group of 20 healthy young and middle-aged individuals of both genders. Results: In the ultrasound examination, we observed the following lymph nodes: mastoid; parotid (superficial, extraglandular, and intraglandular); submandibular (preglandular, retroglandular, and intracapsular); submental; and cervical (anterior and posterior). Although some individuals had up to seven lymph nodes in the same region, most had only two to three per region. The smallest lymph node diameter observed was 0.4 cm, and the largest was 2.7 cm. Most lymph nodes showed an elongated or oval shape. Most of the lymph node hila were echogenic, although a few were hyperechoic. However, the cortex was clearly hypoechoic in all of the lymph nodes evaluated. Conclusion: Ultrasound examination of healthy individuals allowed the characteristics of the lymph nodes of the head and neck to be observed clearly, which could provide a basis for the analysis of patients with diseases of these lymph nodes. -
