THE Frank Commission continues until the end of the year with its probe into co~ruption, and we should now turn our attention to the need for a successor in the new year. No one can doubt that the Frank Commission, under Judge Theo Frank, heading a multidisciplinary team, has done sterling work and has succeeded in throwing the spotlight on corruption. The youngest artist in the exhibi­ tion. 23-year-old Sebunya's work has absorbed both European and African influences, while the work of Jocelyn Santosfrom Benin positively shouts a West African context through its bright colours. Santos, who now lives in Paris, studied textile design and has worked as a designer for the past 20 years.

By contrast. South African artist Zuleika Bladsczyek-Radziwill studied social science be­ fore turning to a profession in the arts. Now living in France, her painting career began in South Africa where she used to decorate the walls of people's houses with colourful murals, before realising that her first love was art. She has two untitled works on show - powerful self-portraits. One depicts a half-doIl, half-girl fig­ ure suspended in mid-air, which, she says, is meant to convey something of her "sad childhood". "Whereas for a child, a doll is used primarily for pleasure, for an adult a child is sometimes treated as a doll - to be tossed aside and abused," says Bladsczyek-Radziwill. Born of a Polish father and black South African mother, she was raped when still a child and says she felt like "an outcast in both the white and the black communities". The second self-portrait shows a lean and hungry­ looking crowd behind bars. In front of it, on the other side of bars, stands a can of Coke, which, says the artist, symbolises her four years' imprisonment in South Africa for having been involved in political activity. Throughout the four years, her mother smuggled food to her in a Coca Cola tin.
