Importance of Marginal Habitats for Grassland Diversity: Fallows and Overgrown Tall-Grass Steppe As Key Habitats of Endangered Ground-Beetle Carabus Hungaricus
Insect Conservation and Diversity (2012) 5, 27–36 doi: 10.1111/j.1752-4598.2011.00146.x Importance of marginal habitats for grassland diversity: fallows and overgrown tall-grass steppe as key habitats of endangered ground-beetle Carabus hungaricus 1,2 1 1,2 PAVEL POKLUDA, DAVID HAUCK and LUKAS CIZEK 1Biology Centre ASCR, Institute of Entomology, Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic and 2Faculty of Science, University of South Bohemia, Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic Abstract. 1. To facilitate effective conservation management of dry-grassland diver- sity we studied the habitat selection of Carabus hungaricus, the globally declining, highly endangered, dry-grassland specialist beetle listed in the EU Habitats Directive, and several co-occurring beetles at a pannonian dry-grassland fragment, the Pouzdr- any steppe, SE Czech Republic. The beetles were sampled using 186 pitfall traps from March to November 2006. Number of C. hungaricus captures in each trap was related to vegetation and abiotic habitat characteristics; captures of all sampled bee- tles in each trap were related to each other. 2. We found that C. hungaricus prefers relatively humid patches of tall-grass steppe within the xeric grassland and tall-grass ruderal vegetation nearby. During the breed- ing period, females preferred drier and warmer sites than males. 3. Its potential competitors, i.e., Carabus spp., Calosoma spp. (Coleoptera: Carabi- dae), and other species of conservation interest, including Meloe spp. (Coleoptera: Meloidae), Dorcadion spp. (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), were associated with vegeta- tion avoided by C. hungaricus, such as short-grass and bare-soil patches and woody plants. 4. Vegetation structure within 2.5 m affected C. -

Vengono descritte le nuove sottospecie Dorcadion regulare dramaticum (Macedonia orientale), D. gallipolitanum fumidum (Tracia centrale) e D. tauricum pittinoi (Tracia orientale). Si propongono inoltre 5 nuove sinonimie e 1 cambiamento di status tassonomico, e vengono forniti una chiave dicotomica ed un catalogo delle specie della Grecia continentale. Parole chiave: Dorcadionini, Macedonia, Tracia Abstract - Researches upon the Dorcadionini of Greece. IV. The species from Macedonia and Thrace. The present work deals with the species of the tribe Dorcadionini from the Greek regions of Mace- donia and Thrace. A description is given for the new subspecies Dorcadion regulare dramaticum (from oriental Macedonia), D. gallipolitanum fumidum (from central Thrace near Egiros) and D. tauricum pittinoi (from oriental Thrace). 5 new synonimies and 1 change of taxonomic status are furthermore proposed; a key and a catalogue of the species from Continental Greece are fi nally given. Key words: Dorcadionini, Macedonia, Thrace. -

Bugs & Beasties of the Western Rhodopes
Bugs and Beasties of the Western Rhodopes (a photoguide to some lesser-known species) by Chris Gibson and Judith Poyser [email protected] Yagodina At Honeyguide, we aim to help you experience the full range of wildlife in the places we visit. Generally we start with birds, flowers and butterflies, but we don’t ignore 'other invertebrates'. In the western Rhodopes they are just so abundant and diverse that they are one of the abiding features of the area. While simply experiencing this diversity is sufficient for some, as naturalists many of us want to know more, and in particular to be able to give names to what we see. Therein lies the problem: especially in eastern Europe, there are few books covering the invertebrates in any comprehensive way. Hence this photoguide – while in no way can this be considered an ‘eastern Chinery’, it at least provides a taster of the rich invertebrate fauna you may encounter, based on a couple of Honeyguide holidays we have led in the western Rhodopes during June. We stayed most of the time in a tight area around Yagodina, and almost anything we saw could reasonably be expected to be seen almost anywhere around there in the right habitat. Most of the photos were taken in 2014, with a few additional ones from 2012. While these creatures have found their way into the lists of the holiday reports, relatively few have been accompanied by photos. We have attempted to name the species depicted, using the available books and the vast resources of the internet, but in many cases it has not been possible to be definitive and the identifications should be treated as a ‘best fit’. -
A Dél-Tiszántúl Annotált Állattani Bibliográfiájának Alapvetése
Crisicum 4. pp.431. _______________________________________________________________________________ A Dél-Tiszántúl annotált állattani bibliográfiájának alapvetése Kalivoda Béla Abstrackt Establishing the basis of the Annotated Zoological Bibliography of the South-Tiszántúl: The goal of this work was to initiate to collect the publications of the zoological data of the South- Tiszántúl (South-East Hungary, see on the maplet) namely the activity area of the Körös-Maros National Park Directorate. During the assembly of the bibliography my principal was the collection of zoological data. So the work contains publications of more or less accurate occurrence data. For the better usages sake the bibliography is annotated. Its items are provided with a code composed from the name of author(s), year of publishing and, if it is necessary, an additional letter code. Annotations contains these codes providing possibility of query by animal species, taxon and location of data. -

© Autonome Provinz Bozen, Abteilung Forstwirtschaft, download unter www.biologiezentrum.at forest observer vol. 5 2010 31 - 152 Faunistik der Bockkäfer von Südtirol (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) Klaus Hellrigl Abstract Faunistics of Longhorn-beetles (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae) from South Tyrol (N-Italy). A survey on the occurrence of Longhorn-beetles in the Province of South Tyrol-Bolzano is given. The first monograph of the Longhorn-beetles (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae) of the fauna of South Tyrol (N-Italy: Province Bozen-Bolzano) was published by the Author back in 1967. Over 40 years later, a current up- dated and revised edition is given, where also incisive changes and innovations on the valid actual scientific nomenclature of species that occurred since the first edition are considered. Scientific nomenclature follows the recent publications of BENSE (1995), JANIS (2001) and FAUNA EUROPAEA (2007/09) respectively. Detailed descriptions of the presence and biology of some Cerambycid species are given for the first time. Also a historical review of Cerambycid-studies in South-Tirol is given. Apart from the own recent collec- tions and observations made by the Author during the last 45 years, further considered were the findings and rearing results of five other collectors and colleagues, operating here for the last decades, like: M. Kahlen (Hall i.Tirol), W. Schwienbacher (Auer), M. Egger (Innsbruck), E. Niederfriniger (Schenna) und G. v. Mörl (Brixen). In the special faunistic section, the review of each species begins with brief indications about general geographical distribution in Europe and about ecological occurrence, and continues subsequently with a mention of the former indications given by V.
