His original career was as a druggist, beginning in 1860. During the Civil War, he served as a Confederate artilleryman. Known from his earliest years as a talented entertainer and musician, he began performing professionally in 1892. He was white and was assisted by a backup group of four African-American male singers, called the Old South Quartet. They toured both the north and south of the U.S., with enthusiastic reception by their audiences as well as occasional problems with racial discrimination. 1016. Edison BA 2176. OBT (top some- what worn). Includes original text sheet. Just about 1-2. $35.00. EDISON DIAMOND-DISCS SS =early “smooth surface” (laminated “etched” label area, 1912-1915); RC= “Edison Re-Creation” Paper Label (1921-1924); ER = “Edison Record” Paper Label (1924-1929). All others (1915-1920) have various forms of “etched” black centers. All explanatory talks are by Harry E. Humphrey unless specifically identified as John Charles Thomas (who recorded a few in 1914, just as his singing career was developing). Edison discs pick up marks and rubs easily, so unless really extraordinary, top copies will probably be graded “cons . 2”. There should be no difference in sound between records graded “ just about 1-2” and those “2”, as well as any with “superficial” connected to the grading. The same applies to all the other recordings listed in this catalogue. As Edison often issued multiple takes (the letters following the matrix numbers indicate the take), collectors may find comparisons of these interesting. Sometimes the different takes were made during the same session, but other times there could be months or even years separating them. Likewise the takes can be remarkably similar or noticeably different. It’s often possible to observe physically, in comparing multiple takes, that one might be shorter than another. • ARSC Journal
THE MARKETPLACE HOW WELL DID EDISON RECORDS SELL? During the latter part of 1919 Thomas A. Edison, Inc. began to keep cumulative sales figures for those records that were still available. The documents were continued into 1920 and then stopped. While the documents included sales figures for all series of discs time allowed me to copy only those figures for the higher priced classical series. Thus the present article includes the 82,000 ($2.00); 82,500 ($2.50); 83,000 ($3.00) and 84,000 ($4.00) series. Should there be sufficient interest it may be possible to do the other series at a later date. While the document did list some of the special Tone-Test records pressing figures were included for only two of them. I have arbitrarily excluded them and propose to discuss the Edison Tone Tests at a later date. The documents also originally included supplementary listings, which, for the sake of convenience, have been merged into the regular listings. The type copy of the major portion of the listings has been taken from regular Edison numerical catalogs and forms the framework of my forthcoming Complete Edison Disc Numerical Catalog. Several things may be noted: 1) Many of the sales figures seem surprisingly small and many of the records must be classed as rarities; 2) Deletion was not always because of poor sales-mold damage also played a part; 3) Records were retained even with extremely disappointing sales. Without a knowledge of the reason for discontinuance we cannot assume anything concerning records that had already been discontinued.

  • A Caravan of Culture: Visitors to Emporia, Kansas by Charles E
A Caravan of Culture: Visitors to Emporia, Kansas by Charles E. Webb INTRODUCTION hat do Ulysses S. Grant, "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Susan B. Anthony, Will Rogers, Ethel Barrymore, and Dr. \Verner Von Braun haye in common"? They were W among the hundreds of famous people that have visited EmpOria, Kansas during the past one hundred years. In dividuals and groups of national and international fame, represen ting the arts, seiencl's. education, politics, and entertainment, have pa~sed before Emporia audiences in a century long parade. Since 1879, this formidable array of personalities has provided informa tion and entertainment to Emporia citizens at an average rate of once eaeh fifteen days, The occasional appearanee of a famous personality in a small city may well be considered a matter of historical coineidence. When, however, such visits are numbered in the hundreds, arc fre quent, and persist for a century, it appears reasonable to rank the phenomenon as an important part of that eity's cultural heritage. Emporia, although located in the interior plains, never ae cepted the role of being an isolated community. It seems that the (own's pioneers eonsidered themselves not on the frontier fringi'" of America, but strategically situated near its heart. From the town's beginning, its inhabitants indicated an intention of being informed and participating members of the national and world communities. To better understand why Emporia was able to attract so many distinguished guests, a brief examination of its early development is required. In the formative years of the city's history wc may identify some of the events, attitudes, and preparations Ihat literally set the stage for a procession of renowned visitors.

  • Il Trittico Pucciniano
GIACOMO PUCCINI IL TRITTICO PUCCINIANO Il trittico viene rappresentato per la prima volta al Teatro Metropolitan di New York il 14 dicembre 1918. Il tabarro - Luigi Montesanto (Michele); Giulio Crimi (Luigi), Claudia Muzio (Giorgetta); Suor Angelica - Geraldine Farrar (Suor Angelica), Flora Perini (Zia Principessa); Gianni Schicchi - Giuseppe de Luca (Gianni Schicchi), Florence Easton (Lauretta), Giulio Crimi (Rinuccio); direttore d'orchestra Roberto Moranzoni.

Antecedents of the research Karel Burian was one of the best tenors of the first two decades of the twentieth century. The authors of his biographies always mention his Wagner roles – mainly Tristan – and his long presence in New York, and primarily the world premiere of Salome by Richard Strauss, when he played the role of Herod to much acclaim. His reputation and popularity might be measured against those of Enrico Caruso. Burian was first engaged in Budapest as a young but already well- known Wagner-tenor, he worked there for one year as a member of the Opera House, then later as guest singer regularly until his death. He was likely the most influential operatic world star in Budapest at the beginning of the twentieth century, and was the founder and for many years the only intended representative of the Heldentenor role in Hungary. He primarily sang Wagner operas, but there was also a Hungarian opera on his repertoire in Budapest. A study of his activities in Hungary contributes to our knowledge of Hungarian opera life, and Burian’s whole career affected the cultural history of the period because of his frequent guest appearances in Budapest. Burian’s Budapest activity had a great influence on the young composers of that time, most notably on Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály as well. There is a relatively large amount of literature about Burian, mostly in Czech, English and German.
