C. C.001 C., J. E. “Dr. Duncan and the Book of Mormon.” MS 52 (1 September 1890): 552-56. A defense of the Book of Mormon against the criticism of Dr. Duncan in the Islington Gazette of August 18th. Dr. Duncan, evidently a literary critic, concluded that the Book of Mormon was either a clumsy or barefaced forgery or a pious fraud. The author writes that the Book of Mormon makes clear many doctrines that are difcult to understand in the Bible. Also, the history and gospel taught by the Bible and the Book of Mormon are similar because both were inspired of God. [B. D.] C.002 C., M. J. “Mormonism.” Plainsville Telegraph (March 3, 1831): 4. Tells of the conversion of Sidney Rigdon who read the Book of Mormon and “partly condemned it” but after two days accepted it as truthful. He asked for a sign though he knew it was wrong and saw the devil appearing as an angel of light. The author of this article warns against the Book of Mormon and against the deception of the Mormons. The Faith Healer’s Pledge: How early Mormons Captured Audiences Tal Meretz (Monash University) Abstract: This paper explores the use of faith healing in attracting converts to early Mormonism, by investigating the diaries and autobiographies of both converts and missionaries. It argues that while faith healing was technically banned from being used to convert people, it still played a specific but essential role as a ‘clincher’ for those on the brink of conversion. It explores faith healing in relation to the Mormon conversion process as a whole, and resolves the theologically inconsistent position on magic and supernaturalism. It contends that the use of faith healing in the Mormon missionary process has gone largely unacknowledged because previous scholars have prioritised official Mormon documents over unofficial personal writings. Key Words: Mormon, Joseph Smith, faith healing, conversion, nineteenth century America, missionaries, diaries, autobiographies, life writings. INTRODUCTION In 1831, Gilbert Belnap travelled to Kirtland, Ohio. He had heard that a third temple was being built there by the Mormons and wanted to see it for himself.1 In his autobiography, Gilbert wrote of the temple, “the architecture and the construction of the interior of this temple of worship surely must have been of ancient origin as the master builder has said that the plan thereof was given by revelation from God, and I see no reason why this should not be credited for no one can disprove it.”2 He was enamoured I would like to thank my two anonymous reviewers for their helpful comments. 1 While the Church would undergo several name changes before being named Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, this paper will use the informal term for members of the Church – Mormons - and will refer to their religion as Mormonism. -

CHAPTER 2 Glory Enough Editors’ note: This is an excerpt of chapter 2 from No Unhallowed Hand, volume 2 in the Saints series. (Volume 2 will be released early next year.) The previous chapter, in the July issue, describes the advance company of migrating Saints, called the “Camp of Israel.” They have been camped at Sugar Creek, a relatively short distance across the Mississippi River from Nauvoo. On March 1, 1846, Brigham Young began to lead the advance company west. hile the Saints with Brigham Young were leaving Sugar Creek, 43-year- old Louisa Pratt remained in Nauvoo, preparing to leave the city with her four young daughters. Three years earlier, the Lord had called her hus- Wband, Addison, on a mission to the Pacific Islands. Since then, unreliable mail service between Nauvoo and Tubuai, the island in French Polynesia where Addison was serving, had made it hard to stay in contact with him. Most of his letters were several months old when they arrived, and some were older than a year. Addison’s latest letter made it clear that he would not be home in time to go west with her. The Twelve had instructed him to remain in the Pacific Islands until they called him home or sent missionaries to replace him. At one point, Brigham had hoped to send more missionaries to the islands after the Saints received the endowment, but the exodus from Nauvoo had postponed that plan.1 Louisa was willing to make the journey without her husband, but thinking about it made her nervous. -

Godfrey brought to the attention of his- torians a document located in the LDS Church History Library that contains the constitution, bylaws, minutes, and holdings of the short-lived Nauvoo Li- brary and Literary Institute.1 Drawing upon the extant records detailing the li- brary’s constitution, the minutes from its several meetings, and a record of its holdings, Godfrey briefly outlined the history of the library, noted the various books that Mormon prophet Joseph Smith had donated, and suggested a num- ber of potentially fruitful avenues of research for historians.2 Those questions posed by Godfrey reflect larger trends in the historical profession of that era. The “New Mormon History” that emerged in the latter half of the twentieth century sought to incorporate the historical concerns posed by the increas- ingly influential social history of the day.3 Godfrey was thus interested in using the record of the Nauvoo Library and Institute’s minutes and holdings to learn more about what books Latter- day Saints were reading in the 1840s, identifying otherwise unknown figures whose names appeared in the record, and gauging “the intellectual climate” and “cultural life” of Nauvoo. Ironically, other questions posed by Godfrey— and the fact that he listed only the books donated to the library by Joseph Smith—reveals the centrality of early Mormon leaders (especially Joseph Smith) in scholars’ efforts to understand Mormon history. -

That first migration of Latter-day Saints to the Great Basin occurred in two stages: in 1846, from western Illinois to the Missouri River in the area of today’s Council Bluffs, Iowa; and in 1847, from the Missouri River to Salt Lake City.
