Northern Utah was in many ways a Crossroads long before the emigrants, settlers, railroad and military came here. As early as pre-Fremont Native Americans, we find evidence of trails and trade routes across this geographic area. The trappers and traders, both English and American, knew the area and crisscrossed it following many of the Native American trails. They also established new routes. Explorers sought additional routes to avoid natural barriers such as the mountains and the Great Salt Lake. As emigrants and settlers traveled west, knowledge of the area spread. The Crossroads designation was permanently established once the Railroad spanned the nation. -

ARTICLES AND ESSAYS William Smith, 1811-93: Problematic Patriarch Irene M. Bates WILLIAM SMITH, YOUNGER BROTHER of the prophet Joseph Smith, has been easy to dismiss but difficult to deal with. More often than not, he has been described with adjectives like violent, wicked, unstable, and licentious. Yet intriguing references suggest that a more balanced view of this complex man might be appropriate. The Prophet described his brother in a blessing 18 December 1833 this way: "Brother William is as the fierce lion which divideth not the spoil because of his strength." x Then on 9 December 1842, William defended the Nauvoo Charter with uncommon eloquence as representative for Hancock County in the Illinois legislature.2 In August 1845, W. W. Phelps designated William "the Patriarchal Jacob's Staff." 3 And B. H. Roberts, impressed with the seventy-year-old William in 1881, said he had "so vindicated the claims and the character of his brother that ever afterward whenever the question of Joseph Smith came up, people would say 'He had just as good a right to be a prophet as any man mentioned in the Bible.' " 4 William Smith was born at Royal t o n , Vermont, 13 March 1811, the fifth son of Joseph, Sr., and Lucy Mack Smith. He was baptized by David Whitmer 9 June 1830 and was ordained an apostle 15 February 1835, before he was twenty-four years old. He married Caroline Amanda Grant, the sister of IRENE M. Bates, who joined the Church in England in 1955 and moved to the United States with her husband, William, and four children in 1967, is a 1975 graduate of UCLA. -

Fleming Although a handful of visits to Philadelphia were made throughout the 1830s, Mormon proselyting began there in earnest in 1839. This endeavor was part of a larger proselyting effort that had begun a year earlier through- out the counties surrounding Philadelphia. Lorenzo Barnes and Elisha Davis had met with great success in nearby Chester County, Pennsylvania, and Benjamin Winchester had also made numerous converts in central New Jersey.1 The next summer, Winchester began proselytizing in Philadelphia. At first, he “was ridiculed on almost ev[e]ry occasion when I enquired for a house” to preach in, yet he persevered. Winchester finally found a hall and “a crowded congregation attended the meeting.” After Winchester preached there about a dozen times, he debated with a Presbyterian minister, “which was the means of doing much good. By this time there was quite an excite- ment, and the former prejudices of the people seemed in part removed.” Winchester baptized several in Philadelphia, “and I feel myself authorized to say that the work of the Lord is gaining ground, in this city: and I trust that it will still roll on.”2 Joseph Smith’s visit to the area on his way to Washington, D.C., in the winter of 1839–40 spurred further growth of Mormonism in the area. A local newspaper reported that the Prophet “visited New Egypt, Hornerstown, and Toms River [New Jersey] and sealed a large number to the church.”3 Joseph also established branches in Philadelphia and Chester County, STEPHEN J. -

The previous summer, Allied Armies, under Dwight D. Eisenhower, landed in Normandy and began driving toward the Fatherland. The Red Army had been pushing west toward Berlin since its victory over the final German offensive at the Battle of Kursk in August 1943. On April 30, Hitler committed suicide in his bunker, and Germany surrendered seven days later. War continued on the other side of the globe. The American strategy of island-hopping had culminated in the 1944 recapture of the Philippines and the final destruction Professor of Law and Robert and Elizabeth Scott Research Professor, William & Mary Law School. C. C.001 C., J. E. “Dr. Duncan and the Book of Mormon.” MS 52 (1 September 1890): 552-56. A defense of the Book of Mormon against the criticism of Dr. Duncan in the Islington Gazette of August 18th. Dr. Duncan, evidently a literary critic, concluded that the Book of Mormon was either a clumsy or barefaced forgery or a pious fraud. The author writes that the Book of Mormon makes clear many doctrines that are difcult to understand in the Bible. Also, the history and gospel taught by the Bible and the Book of Mormon are similar because both were inspired of God. [B. D.] C.002 C., M. J. “Mormonism.” Plainsville Telegraph (March 3, 1831): 4. Tells of the conversion of Sidney Rigdon who read the Book of Mormon and “partly condemned it” but after two days accepted it as truthful. He asked for a sign though he knew it was wrong and saw the devil appearing as an angel of light. The author of this article warns against the Book of Mormon and against the deception of the Mormons. Landon At least as early as 1862, Brigham Young directed Latter-day Saint lead- ers in St. George to construct a tabernacle, a building designed not only for church services, but which also would serve as a social and cultural center for the entire community. In a letter to Mormon Apostle Erastus Snow, Brigham Young clearly noted that the tabernacle would represent more than a place of worship: As I have already informed you, I wish you and the brethren to build, as speedily as possible, a good substantial, commodious, well finished meeting house, one large enough to comfortably seat at least 2000 persons and that will be not only useful but also an ornament to your city and a credit to your energy and enterprise. I hereby place at your disposal, expressly to aid in building the aforesaid meeting-house, the labor, molasses, vegetable and grain tithing of Cedar City and of all places and persons south of that city. I hope you will begin the building at the earliest practicable date; and be able with the aid herein given to speedily prosecute the work to completion.1 Brigham Young’s efforts to encourage Latter-day Saints to settle in St. George, indeed in all of southern Utah, had met with mixed results. Even George A. Smith, his longtime friend and counselor in the First Presidency, once described the area as “the most wretched, barren, God-forsaken country in the world.”2 In his letter to Snow, Brigham Young implied that a substantial meeting place would give the St. -

Robert Clifton Family: Saints of the Martin Handcart Company Kyle S. Anderson In my 30 plus visits to Martin’s Cove and the surrounding region that stands as a historical witness to the faith and fortitude of the Martin and Willie Handcart Companies along with the Hunt and Hodgett Wagon Companies, not a trip goes by that I do not think about my responsibility to write what I have come to understand about my ancestors who were participants in the Martin Handcart Company. Although there is not a lot written by or about the Robert Clifton family I believe that there is more information out there yet to be discovered and hope this will be the beginning of a much larger story to be written at a later time. Robert Clifton was born 3 March 1805 in Attleborough, Norfolk, England and married on 16 July 1832 to Mary Matilda Blanchard who was born 30 November 1811 in London, Middlesex, England. The complete story of the number of children Robert and Mary had is not fully accounted for, as the family records are incomplete with this information. For our purposes we will focus on the three children that we know traveled with them in the Martin Handcart Company, Rebecca (21), Sophia (12) and Ann (turned 7 on the trail). 1 Although the details are minimal and the sources in family search need to be verified, Robert and Mary accepted baptism into the restored church between the years 1841 and 1844. The individual reported to have baptized Robert was a man by the name James Albion and the person reported to have baptized Mary was none other than Lorenzo Snow.
