about Ladywood: the people who live here, the jobs they do, their health and education and their perceptions of the city. The purpose of the document is to provide with data and information to help the district prepare its district plans, ensuring they are based on firm evidence. This report is the product of collaborative work by partners from the city council, NHS, police, third sector and others. It summarises the more detailed analysis of the various needs assessment documents that public sector agencies put together regarding their particular areas of interest. In terms of Ladywood these detailed documents include: • Ladywood Economic & Employment Profile – produced by Birmingham City Council’s Economic Strategy Team • Ladywood Housing Market Report – produced by Birmingham City Council’s Housing Strategy & Partnerships Team • Ladywood District Health Profile – Produced by Birmingham’s Public Health and Information Team. The document reflects the theme areas of Birmingham City Council’s 2013 “Leader’s Policy Statement” of creating a “Fair”, “Prosperous” and “Democratic” city. It comprises the four inner city wards of Aston, Ladywood, Nechells and Soho, and shares a border with Sandwell. Ladywood Ward contains the city centre and central business district; Nechells Ward also contains part of the city centre and Eastside. The other two wards, Aston and Soho, are more residential. Although there are areas of affluence in and around the city centre, much of the district is characterised by households of moderate means and there are high levels of deprivation in the district. Ladywood is the third largest district in terms of area and second largest in terms of population. 49.8% of Ladywood district’s population are female and 43.5% of the population are aged 24 and under, resulting in Ladywood District having the second highest proportion of young people compared with the other districts. In the Ladywood district, black and minority ethnic (BME) groups make up a significant proportion of the total population ‐ the highest proportion of any district and over twice that of the city. 4 Ladywood District Profile 2013 Resident Priorities By using Birmingham Residents Tracker Survey, it is possible to identify what residents in each area identify as their priorities, and how these compare to the city as a whole. 5 Ladywood District Profile 2013 SECTION 1: Who Lives Here? Total Population: 126,693 Households: 47,748 This section outlines a demographic profile of the district, outlining the communities that live in this area, and it draws predominantly on the Census 2011, 2012 population estimates and segmentation data from Experian, and outlines the sources of each section of information. 6 Ladywood District Profile 2013 Overall At the time of the 2011 Census Ladywood had a population of 126,693 which is the highest of all ten districts in Birmingham; this represents a 34% increase on the 2001 population. The district is 2,585 hectares in size, and the population density equates to 59 people per hectare making Ladywood the district with the 3rd highest density of population in the city. The district is comprised of over 47,700 households, with an average household size of 2.6 persons per households making Ladywood the 4th highest district in terms of household size in the city. The average proportion of households that are classed as overcrowded is 28.4% making this district more than double the city average of 12.4% (ONS definition).
