Ohlone Women's Basketball Accepted the Challenge

The Ohlone Women’s basketball team completed it’s first year into their new conference and finished in the top 2 with an impressive 10-2 record, losing just their 5th conference game in 5 years (55-5 overall conference record). For the past 12 years Ohlone has participated in the Coast Conference South Division. This conference was composed of San Jose City College, Monterey Peninsula, Hartnell, Mission, Cabrillo College and De Anza. Winning 5 conference championships in that conference beginning in 2005. With a recent realignment of the North and South Divisions Ohlone is now participating in the North division which includes; City College of San Francisco, College of San Mateo, Chabot College, Skyline, Las Positas, San Jose City College and Ohlone. “This is a good change for us and our basketball program. It gives us an opportunity for less travel, allows us to be in the same conference as our men’s program and a chance to compete with some different schools. I am looking forward to the new challenge and getting accustomed with the new coaching styles I will be facing on a regular basis.” -Coach Allender says. The North Division of the Coast Conference have been dominated in the past by City College of San Francisco and Foothill College, with Foothill College now competing in the South Division. City College of San Francisco was the North Division champions for 2014. “I love the challenge of having to face City College of San Francisco now in conference play. They are a well-coached team who has proven to be a high level program for the past 10 or so years. We’ve had our battles over the years and have come out of those games with both wins and losses. In the last 3 years we’ve played them 8 times and we are 4-4 against them.” –Coach Allender says. The Renegades had an entirely new roster only returning 2 players from the active roster of last year’s team. They were lead by a slew of sophomores and a handful of freshman. They finished their season with their 8th straight playoff birth and were the #12 ranked team in Northern California. They had an overall record of 19-11 and a second place finish in their conference again finishing 10- 2. “We had a good year, sure short of where we wanted to end up ultimately but we were very successful. We only returned 2 players from last year’s team and went out and won 19 games, finished second in one of the tougher conferences in the North and went into playoffs as the 12th ranked team. All 5 sophomores will graduate and will transfer to play at the next level. We did well and I am proud.” - says Coach Allender .
