Previewing the 2002

After finishing the 2001 season ranked 25 th in the nation and ad vancing into the second round of the NCAA Tournament, the USO Vol leyball program continues to gain more national recognition. The recog nition comes with raised expectations for third-year head coach Jennifer Petrie and her 2002 Toreros who will open the season at the Uni versity of

Texas Invitational on Friday, August 30th -3 l st . The trip will mark the first of five preseason tournaments for the Toreros. The USO Invitational, September 6th - 7th initiates USD's home schedul e, bringing North Carolina, Northwestern and Montana to the Jenny Craig Pav ilion. The USO Tournament on September 27 th -28th is highlighted with a date against # 18 Colorado State. Tournament formats will also be the setting for road matches with #5 Long Beach State, Fresno State and UNLY. " Our pre Senior Captain's1-r Debra season schedule is Robenson & Noel Frohman very exciting this year," says Petri e. "It is designed to help prepare us to play in the West Coast Conference. By playing ranked opponents early, we should be ready to face the top teams in the WCC." Petrie is continuing a recent tradition at USO that has seen five Torero teams in six years qualify for postseason play. USO has been picked to match last year's finish of third in the West Coast Confer- ence behind #8 Pepperdine and #24 Santa Clara, however Petrie has set the bar higher for her Toreros in 2002. "As this program grows so do our expec tations," comments Petrie. "This year we are striv ing to win a WCC Championship and to take an other step in the NCAA Tournament. We are train ing with no limitations to our success." Seniors Noel Frohman and Debra Robertson have assumed leadership roles as the 2002 Torero team captains. Both players are three time all-conference selections and are expected to be dominating players this fall. Frohman re turns for her senior year after leading the WCC in kills (426) and ranking among the league's best in virtually every offensive category as a junior. Robertson is a fifth-year senior middle blocker that will anchor a Torero line-up loaded USO Will trv and qualifY for their Sixth NCU with young talent. Tournament in seven years THE 2002 TOBEBOS 3

Devon Forster, a sophomore outside hitter from Boul der, Colorado is part of San Diego's outstanding sophomore class. Forster completed her rookie season by being named the WCC Freshman of the Year. Kri sten Hurst, from Bakers field, , also starred during her first season in San Diego. Hurst served up a conference best 39 aces, helping the Toreros compile a 22-9 overall record. "We expect both Devon and Kristen to play even larger roles as sophomores," added Petrie. "Our young play-" ers will be such an essential part of this team and we are ex cited to see them continue to develop and raise the level of our program." The program loses two key components from a team that advanced into the NCAA Tournament's second round a year ago. Gradu- ated seniors Ali Martin and Lindsey Lampert were record-set ting performers that will be diffi cult to replace. Fifth-vear senior Debra Roberston has Martin was a 299 career blocks team leader that completed her collegiate career as US D's fourth all -time leading setter. Lampert was a first-team All-WCC middle blocker in 2001, leading the league in solo and total blocks. The revamped Torero line-up will feature four true freshmen. Setter Lindsey Sherburne highlights San Diego's group of new play- ers. NCAA Tournament Run Highlights 2001 Season

The University of San Diego's 200 I Volleyball season proved to be one of the most successful and one of the most promising in the school's 27-year vol leyball hi story. Led by an accomplished group of veterans that were complemented by some of the best young players on the west coast, the Toreros finished the season with 22 win s and ad vanced into the second round of the NCAA Tournament. "I was thrilled with the outcome of the 200 I vol leyball season," said third-year Head Coach Jennifer Petrie. "It is exciting to see so many young faces contributing so early in their careers. Between the mixture of experienced upperclass men and extremely talented fresh men, USO voll eyball is looking forward to a very bright future." The young faces included the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year Devon Forster. The 6-1 outside-hitter from Boulder Colo rado was selected as an All-West Coast Conference first team player as a true freshman in 200 I. Forster and teammate Kri sten Hurst, a true freshman from Bakersfield, California ranked one and two in the league in service aces. Freshmen contributions came from defensive special ist Kalae Araujo and Jocelyne Roy as well, both key factors in the Torero's advancement into NCAA Tournament play. With leadership coming from record setting seniors Ali Martin and Lindsey Lampert the Toreros ran through their first five league oppo nents including a sweep of then-#20 Santa Clara. USO would finish the season third in the WCC with a I 0-4 conference mark. Lampert, a senior from Long Beach 2001 senior setter Ali Martin, uso·s California, led the conference 4th leading setter all-time with 104 blocks and was a first team AII-WCC selec- tion. Lampert and the rest of the San Diego offense was assisted by Martin, who finished her career as the fourth al l-time leading setter in San Diego volleyball history. Junior Noel Frohman was the most consistent attacker for San Diego in 200 I. Frohman will return for her senior season after captur ing All-West Coast Conference first team honors in 200 I. Frohman used her 31-inch vertical leap to lead the Toreros in kills with 426 during the regular season and also in digs with a 3.06 average per game. San Diego finished the regular season in third place in the West Coast Conference with a league record of I 0-4. The Toreros have not experienced a losing season in conference play si nce 1990 and have compiled a WCC record of 93-33 since 1992. The Toreros, who won back-to-back WCC Championships in 1997-98, have not finished any lower than fourth in the conference since 1989. In 2001 the Toreros swept Gonzaga, Portland, St. Mary's and San Francisco and split season series with LMU and Santa C lara. San Diego was defeated twice by conference champion Pepperdine. With a 2 1-8 record after regular season play, the Toreros were USO huddles during an improbable awarded a birth into the NCAA Tournament. The se lection would be comeback win over UCSB in the THE 2001 TOREROS 15

San Diego's sixth in school hi story and the fifth in six years. The tournament , seeded USO against #25 ranked UC Santa Barbara in first round action in the Pyramid at Long Beach. It was the first meeting between the two teams in 2001 and it proved to be one to remember. ... The Toreros would start the game with no conviction, dropping games one and two 30-26. USO would come roaring back after being down • 111 20-12 in game three. The Toreros found a way to rattle off six straight points ti>, to win game three 30-28 and stay Jtp\ alive. With their season on the line, the resurgence continued in Fina12001 the fourth set as the Toreros led wee Standings 27-14 and held off a furious Santa wee Overall Barbara rally to win 30-27. The USO Athletic Academic Support program is designed to promote the academic development of student-athletes. The primary objective is to offer the necessary resources for the academic success of student-athletes as they work to earn their degree. Academic Support services are designed to enhance the student-athlete 's overall collegiate experience and encourage development and attainment of academic and career goals. The University of San Diego's Academic Support efforts are led by Shaney Fink who begi ns her third year as USD' s Academic Support Coordina tor. Fink was a standout volleyball player in the 90' s, and in 1999 she was on the Volleyball coaching staff as an assistant, hel ping the Toreros to a 23-6 record and a second round finish in the NCAA Tournament. Prior to USO she gained coaching experience at the high sc hool, college and international le vels for five years. She capped off a stellar collegiate career ( 1990-93) at Cal Berkeley and won selection to the All-PAC Ten Decade Team. Fink completed her B.A., graduating in Social Science from Berkeley in 1994. All USO student athletes have access to advising, tutoring and mentoring services. The mentoring program, Access, was developed in 1999 and teams a graduate student in the Coun seling program with an athlete who would like to enh ance study skills, learn about campus resources and receive guidance on 2001 Graduate and AII-WCC First Team goal development and attainment. Student-athletes also have access to a quiet plaver Lindsev Lampert area where they can study or work in the computer center. In addition, student athletes are encouraged to utilize the campus learning centers including the Writing, Math and Logic Centers as well as to take advantage of the resources available to them in the Career Center, Counseling Center and Computer Labs. "The greatest challenge to a Division I athlete is to balance the demands of sport while taking full advantage of the educational experience offered. The purpose of our program is to assist student-athletes in meeting this chal lenge by offering tutoring, advising, mentoring and a quiet environment to study. The academic support program is designed to assist students in adjusting to life at USD and developing sound academic and career plans. By promoting a philosophy of individual responsibility, which encourages each student-athlete to value their educa tional experience, the academic support program assists each athlete to realize their full potential." THE SETTING

The University of San Di ego is an independent Cath o li c institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlook ing Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park and is located just IO minutes from downtown San Di ego and the world famous San Diego Zoo. Historic Old Town is just min utes away as well. The city of San Diego along with this campus traces their orig in s to fifteenth century Spain. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Henares. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castl e) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the vill age centu ries later and fo unded a university, the Univer sity of Alcala, whose buildings became th e inspiration for US D's style. Both in sti tutions are located on a hill overlooking a river valley.

THE CAMPUS

The USO campus is regarded as one of the most architecturall y unique institutions in the country, featuring 18 major buildings designed in an ornamental 16th century Spanish Renaissance style. Since 1984, USO has completed 11 major construction and expansion projects. A five-story, Spanish Renaissance parking garage ( I, I 00 spaces) was completed in 1998. A landscaped founta in plaza was finished in the fall of 1995, connecting the entrances of the lmmaculata and Hughes Administration Center. In 1992, the university completed the 45,000 square foot Loma Hall. which includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail cen ter, classrooms and laboratories. In 1990, th e renovated Katherine M. and George M. Pardee Jr. Legal Research Center opened, a facility that offers the latest in information technol ogy.

ACADEMICS

USO enro ll s more than 6,943 students who have a choice of more than 50 under graduate and graduate degree programs. The university's academic units include the Col lege of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursin g. C lass size generall y averages between 18-25 students with th e student to teacher ratio being 18: I. Over 97 percent of USD's ful l-time facu lt y hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's coll eges and uni versiti es, published by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the regional to nati onal category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top I 00 schools in th e nation.

San Diego is truly "America's Finest City."
