www.portlandpilots.com UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND Head Coach Jim Sollars

UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND: Jim Sollars enters his 19th season as the head coach of the University of Portland women’s basketball program, his 29th overall season as a collegiate head coach. In his first 11 years at Portland, Sollars also served the university as a history professor. He ended his 31-year teaching career upon announcing his retirement following the 1996-97 academic year.

Last year, Sollars led Portland to a fourth-place finish in the WCC with an 8-6 conference record. The Pilots advanced to the semifinals of the WCC Tournament, losing a heartbreaker to top-seed Loyola Marymount 59-54 in overtime.

Sollars recorded his 250th career victory as the Pilot head coach with a 64-62 win over conference rival San Francisco on Feb. 14, 2003. Under Sollars’ leadership at Portland, 25 players have earned all- honors, four players have been named the WCC Player of the Year, and he has coached two Pilots (Laura Sale and Deanna Lansing) to honorable mention All-America status. His players also show excellence in the classroom as he has guided 14 WCC all-Academic Team selections, four CoSIDA/GTE Academic all-District Team picks and one WCC Scholar Athlete of the Year, while two athletes have earned first team GTE Academic All-America honors.

The Pilots have made five postseason appearances in the last ten years, most recently in 1998-99 with an appearance in the WNIT in Seattle, Wash. After just missing the NCAA Tournament in 1997-98, Sollars had four consecutive NCAA Tournament berths (1993-97), including the first in school history in 1993-94. From 1993-99, Sollars and the Pilots compiled a 125-51 record, including a 27-3 mark during the 1996-97 season, the program’s best since joining the NCAA Division-I ranks. His 1994-95 and 1995-96 squads each posted 23-7 records.

In 1996-97, the team racked up the second-highest win total in program history, won a second-consecutive West Coast Conference championship (the third overall during Sollars’ tenure), became the first team in league history to go undefeated (14-0) in WCC play and was the school’s first NCAA Division-I basketball team to earn a national ranking (highest rating No. 21 USA Today/ No. 25 in the final poll). Sollars was named WBCA District-8 Coach of the Year and was WCC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career.

Sollars was hired prior to the 1986-87 season, Portland’s first at the NCAA Division-I level. He led his 1987-88 team to a 17-11 record, a second- place WCC finish and garnered WCC Coach of the Year honors. Sollars claimed the school’s first WCC basketball championship (men or women) in 1991-92 and he was again named the WCC Coach of the Year, making him the only coach in league history to win the award twice. His 1993-94 team recorded upsets over league leaders Santa Clara and Gonzaga, capturing the WCC Tournament championship, and earning the school’s first NCAA Tournament bid. The Pilots kept ninth-ranked Southern California on the ropes for most of the game before losing 77-62 in a first round, Mideast regional game at the Los Angeles Sports Arena. His 1994-95 team received an NCAA at-large berth (lost 74-59 to Purdue in the West Regional at San Diego State). At-large bids followed in 1996 (lost 78-61 at Texas Tech, Midwest Regional) and 1997 (lost 75-70 in OT to Michigan State at the East Regional, hosted by North Carolina).

COLLEGE COACHING EXPERIENCE: Sollars previously coached at Wenatchee Valley Community College (1976-83) and Portland State University (1983-86). His Wenatchee program won six Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) regional championships and compiled a 154-25 record (.860). Besides building a basketball dynasty, Sollars was also the dean of WVCC’s social sciences department for two years and its athletics director for one year.

COLLEGE PLAYING EXPERIENCE: Sollars earned basketball and baseball letters at Centralia College.

PERSONAL: Born January 5, 1943 in Longview, Wash. and raised in Tenino, Wash. where he was a high school standout in football, basketball and baseball at Tenino High School. His wife, Pam, is an elementary school teacher who completed her masters requirements at the University of Portland. They have four children: Jill (36), Anne (34), Tony (25) and Abby (22). * The Pilots finished the season with a 14-15 overall record and fourth-place WCC finish with an 8-6 mark. It is the first time the Pilots have finished in the upper-half of the league since the 1998-99 season (t-4th), and first winning record in conference since a 9-5 mark in 1997-98. The Pilots won four of their final five regular-season games. After defeating San Diego (78-56) in the quarterfinals of the WCC Tournament, Portland was knocked out in overtime by top-seeded Loyola Marymount 59-54. It marks the second straight season that the Lions eliminated the Pilots.

* Khalila O’Rielly-Williams was named to the all-West Coast Conference first team for the second straight season, while frontcourt mate Ashlee Orndorff took WCC Newcomer of the Year honors as well as an honorable mention all-WCC award.

* O’Rielly-Williams led the league in scoring (16.4 ppg) for the second consecutive season. She also led the league in steals (3.32), was fifth in rebounding (6.9) and seventh in field goal percentage (.473). Ashlee Orndorff recorded a WCC-best 11 double-doubles on the year.

* Portland led the West Coast Conference in scoring (65.7), steals (10.97) and turnover margin (+2.07). The Pilots were third in rebounding (36.6), field goal percentage defense (.399) and scoring margin (+1.5). Joining O’Rielly-Williams among the individual statistical leaders is frontcourt mate Ashlee Orndorff, who led the league in rebounding (8.3), was second in blocked shots (1.57), sixth in free throw percentage (.813), seventh in scoring (11.6) and 10th in field goal percentage (.445). Junior guard Hanna Seltzer is the conference leader in assist/turnover ratio (2.20), tied for fourth in the WCC in assists (3.72), seventh in three-point shooting (.364) and 10th in three-pointers made (36). Whitney Grant was 10th in assists (2.83).

* The Pilots also had three players earn WCC Player of the Week honors throughout the season. Lauren Himmelspach was rewarded on March 1 after scoring a career-high 27 points and leading Portland to a pair of road victories over San Diego and Santa Clara. Whitney Grant garnered the award on Jan. 12 after playing all 40 minutes and registering a career-high 22 points and seven assists as Portland defeated Pepperdine for the first time in 14 meetings. Khalila O’Rielly-Williams was one of three conference athletes to earn the honor at least two times this year. She was first awarded after leading Portland to three victories, including an upset of then-No. 20 Oregon, on Dec. 8. O’Rielly-Williams also claimed the Feb. 16 Player of the Week award after a season-high 27 points in a home win over San Francisco and 18 points and seven rebounds in another home victory against Saint Mary’s.

* O’Rielly-Williams closed out a stellar playing career in the top 10 of several Portland statistical categories. She is third on the scoring list with 1,602 points. She also places in the top 10 of steals, rebounds, field goals made, free throws made, blocks and field goal percentage. On Thurs., Feb. 12 against San Francisco, O’Rielly-Williams became only the second player in Pilot history to record 1,500 points and 700 rebounds. Lorena Legarde (1981-85) accomplished the feat when Portland was at the NAIA division, but O’Rielly-Williams is the first and only to do it at the NCAA Division I level.

* The starting backcourt of Whitney Grant and Hanna Seltzer logged extensive minutes during the stretch run of the season. Grant averaged 32.9 minutes, while Seltzer leads the team with 34.7 minutes per game in league contests. Both guards played the entire 40 minutes in the win over Pepperdine on Jan. 10.

* Head Coach Jim Sollars concluded his 18th season at the helm of the University of Portland’s women’s basketball program with a 265-252 (.513) career overall record and a 123-115 (.517) career WCC record. His 123 wins in the WCC is the most conference wins of any coach in WCC history. Last year, Sollars recorded his 250th career victory as the Pilot head coach with a 64-62 win over conference rival San Francisco on Feb. 14, 2003.
