The victory improved the Gaels’ record to 9-8 (1-1 WCC), while the Waves fell to 10-6 (1-1 WCC).

Four players scored in double figures for Pepperdine, led by Robie Mayberry’s 14-point performance, but the Waves’ collective offensive efforts could not eclipse those by Saint Mary’s stalwarts Louella Tomlinson and Jasmine Smith.

Smith led all players with 24 points on 50% percent shooting from the floor (7-14) and was a perfect 8-8 from the free-throw line. Tomlinson, meanwhile, was a beast on the boards, pulling down 15 defensive rebounds and contributed 20 points on 8-12 shooting.

Collectively, the Gaels made 49% percent of their shots from the field (25- 51) and scored an additional 19 points from the charity stripe.

Despite being down by as many as 15 points in the second half with 8:21 remaining in regulation, Pepperdine refused to surrender and reduced its deficit all the way to three points in less than four minutes following a layup by Jazmine Jackson.

Also key were sophomores Shay Cooney-Williams and Kelsey Patrick who combined for 12 points during this stretch. Cooney-Williams kick started the mini-rally with one of her two 3-point baskets and Patrick made three layups in addition to making two big defensive plays.
