— Scripps Howard News Service Untrue beliefs Here’s a sample of last week’s news reporting: “A new decade is about to start ..”, “What better way to start a new year and decade ...”, and “ABC ‘World News’ Decade Look-Back.” One would think that the first decade of the third millennium came to an end mid- night Dec. 31 and the new decade began a minute after midnight. The truth of the matter is that we must wait another year before the new decade begins at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 1, 2011. Just do the math: The end of 2001 was the first year of the decade; the end of 2002 completed the second year and so forth. The end of 2009 completes the ninth year and the end of 2010 completes the 10th year and the end of the decade. One minute after mid- night Jan. 1, 2011 begins the second decade of the third millennium. Many reporters and talk- ing heads will read this col- umn and will still refer to 2010 as the new decade. My question: What is the most suitable characterization we can give them? January Fun Facts If you were born in January, you are in good company. Do you know anything about these famous people? They were all born in the month of January. Benjamin Franklin, Martin Luther King, Jr., There are about 18,000 species of butterflies in Joan of Arc, Albert Schweitzer, Wolfgang a wide variety of colors, sizes and shapes. They live all Amadeus Mozart, W. C. Fields and Lord Byron. over the world—from the cold of the Arctic tundra to the warmth of the tropical rain forest.

Butterflies begin as an egg, which hatches into a caterpillar. Caterpillars spend most of their lives eating leaves in order to grow. Then they stop eating and moving, and move into the next stage of their lives, which is called the pupal stage. They come out of this stage as butterflies.

At first, their wings are soft and shriveled, but within a few hours, their wings expand and harden. Made of stiff membrane, butterflies’ wings are covered by thousands of tiny colored scales.

Butterflies do not eat food. They only suck liquids through the proboscis, a tube that looks like a drinking straw. To hunt for these liquids, butterflies use their eyes and antennae, which they use for smelling.

Most butterflies only live for a few weeks, but some live up to 10 months. Some, like the Monarch, migrate from Canada and the northern United States to Mexico for the winter.

In 2007, the Breeze Newspapers underwent a major renovation of our building at 2510 Del Prado in Cape Coral. We installed energy efficient fluorescent bulbs, motion sensors in rooms and timers on our light switches. Do you know that fluorescent bulbs are 4 to 6 times more efficient than incandescent bulbs? A 15 watt fluorescent bulb produces the same amount of light as a 60 watt incandescent bulb and it doesnʼt get hot, reducing the need for more AC. We hope you will join us in this conservation effort! BREEZE
