Additionally, Hubei Province is well-known for its diverse landforms, including mountains, hills, mounds and plains. This area is called “The Province of Thousand Lakes” due to the abundance of water resources. Geographical names are exclusive names given to physical or anthropogenic geographic entities at specific spatial locations and are important signs by which humans understand natural and human activities. In this study, geographic information systems (GIS) technology is adopted to establish a geodatabase of geographical names with particular characteristics in Hubei Province and extract certain geomorphologic and environmental factors. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract A new species of nemacheiline loach, Triplophysa pseudostenura, is described from the Yalong River, a tributary of the upper Yangtze River drainage in China. Previous collectors misidentified the species as T. stenura. Triplophysa pseudostenura can be separated from T. stenura and other valid species of Triplophysa by the following combination of characters: body smooth and without scales; head tapering; lips thin and smooth; trunk and caudal peduncle slender, laterally compressed; depth of caudal peduncle tapering posteroventrally approaching caudal fin; posterior chamber of gas bladder reduced or absent; intestine short, forming a zigzag loop posterior to bottom of ‘U’-shaped stomach; insertion of pelvic fins anterior to dorsal-fin origin; caudal fin deeply concave. The American missionaries and traders who reached Canton and other ports did not trouble to reflect Won what China might want of us—nothing more than the Christian gospel and gadgets and tobacco, they seemed to assume. In the years since, Americans sel- dom have had occasion to ponder the question. The historical pattern was that 5 0 Wilson Quarterly Shanghai’s Pudong financial district, sprouting on former farmlands across the Huangpu River from the city’s famous 19th-century Bund, has already established itself as one of Asia’s financial hubs. America influenced China, and that unequal dynamic climaxed in the World War II alliance with Chiang Kai-shek’s shaky Kuomintang gov- ernment against the fascist powers. In the 1940s it was presumed that China desired simply to recov- er from Japanese occupation, poverty, disunity, and corruption. When “our China,” the Nationalist regime of Chiang, went up in a puff of smoke at the end of the 1940s and the Communists took over Beijing, China became The Other. In the acrimonious years after Mao Zedong’s triumph in 1949, China was beyond our influence. But we knew what China wanted: Mao had warned that he would “lean to one side,” and soon he declared, “The Soviet Union’s today is China’s tomorrow.” We were the “imperialists,” and Mao was against us. After Moscow and Beijing quarreled in the early 1960s and the Vietnam War escalated later in the decade, what China wanted became more complex. -

Protection and Transmission of Chinese Nanyin by Prof. Wang, Yaohua Fujian Normal University, China Intangible cultural heritage is the memory of human historical culture, the root of human culture, the ‘energic origin’ of the spirit of human culture and the footstone for the construction of modern human civilization. Ever since China joined the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2004, it has done a lot not only on cognition but also on action to contribute to the protection and transmission of intangible cultural heritage. Please allow me to expatiate these on the case of Chinese nanyin(南音, southern music). I. The precious multi-values of nanyin decide the necessity of protection and transmission for Chinese nanyin. Nanyin, also known as “nanqu” (南曲), “nanyue” (南乐), “nanguan” (南管), “xianguan” (弦管), is one of the oldest music genres with strong local characteristics. As major musical genre, it prevails in the south of Fujian – both in the cities and countryside of Quanzhou, Xiamen, Zhangzhou – and is also quite popular in Taiwan, Hongkong, Macao and the countries of Southeast Asia inhabited by Chinese immigrants from South Fujian. The music of nanyin is also found in various Fujian local operas such as Liyuan Opera (梨园戏), Gaojia Opera (高甲戏), line-leading puppet show (提线木偶戏), Dacheng Opera (打城戏) and the like, forming an essential part of their vocal melodies and instrumental music. As the intangible cultural heritage, nanyin has such values as follows. I.I. Academic value and historical value Nanyin enjoys a reputation as “a living fossil of the ancient music”, as we can trace its relevance to and inheritance of Chinese ancient music in terms of their musical phenomena and features of musical form. -

Introduction The Yangtze River is the largest river in China, and its mainstream is 6300-km long and drainage area is about 1.8=106 km2. The natural and economic conditions vary largely with regions. The degree of nitrogen contamination differs from one area to another. Since 1956, the Water Conservancy Ministry of China had set up more than 900 chemical monitoring stations in succession on 500 rivers all over the country. Within 1958±1990, a quantity of water-quality data, including nitrogen, was accumulated but nobody has studied them systematically. -

1997 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance Film Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (Errol Morris, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, Kevin Smith), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. It was a fi tting tribute to both Fassbinder and the Festival and the ways that American independent cinema was indeed becoming international. Abstract. The Pearl River is one of the three large inland rivers of China. The region at the source of the Pearl River is rich in natural landscape resources and human landscapes, has a profound historical and cultural foundation, and is distinctively featured by minority folk-custom, all of which are advantageous conditions for the development of cultural tourism industry. Yet the development situation of cultural tourism industry at the source of the Pearl River is still less than satisfactory. Only by transformation and upgrading of scenic region at the source of the Pearl River, and development of minority folk-custom-themed the Three Kingdoms History-themed cultural tourism, and cultural heritage tourism products, the cultural tourism industry at the source of the Pearl River can have more development opportunities. Overview of the Pearl River and of Its Source The Pearl River is one of the three inland rivers of China. By streamflow, the Pearl River is the second largest inland river in China, second only to the Yangtze River; by length, the Pearl River is the third largest inland river in China, following the Yangtze River and the Yellow River. The main stream of the Pearl River is 2320km long in total, the basin area is 446,768km2 [1], its river basin stretches over Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao, and it flows into the South China Sea from the 8th estuary in the Pearl River Delta.
