Hopefully, the August issue will allow more pages for the Foreign Section and allow us to catch up with all the non European reports that are building up. I expect the UK Section next month will be somewhat reduced (and for the September issue as well) as we only have the Farnborough Show of any size to report on and then we are into the Olympics and the summer holidays when, traditionally, movements at bases are much reduced. Of course, if we had an internet based magazine then we could easily add extra pages to ensure all the reports received were included each month. However, we do not and we are restricted by page numbers and weight of the magazine to 64 pages for the paper version of MAR. Much as I would like to stop the paper version of MAR, I do realise that a large number of our readers prefer the paper version - either by choice or because they do not have internet access - and as a result of our production change earlier this year we will be able to continue producing a paper version. As I said last month, the rates for Europe and Outside Europe will have to rise due to the significantly increased postage charges, however, I expect the UK rates will be kept at the same levels as for 2012! Again, an apology for the lack of credits this month due to a lack of free space for them - they are all being added together and, hopefully, they will appear in the August magazine. Not a lot more to say this month - please keep sending all the extra photographs as these are very welcome, readers of the paper MAR may not benefit but you do see more pictures in the PDF version. COVER PHOTOGRAPH: A rare Cessna 208B carrying a US serial “86022” arriving at Prestwick on June 21st as “Grey 38” on its ferry flight back to Florida, USA - note the nose mission symbols (John Wilson) Closing date for the August issue is 08.08.12 Brian Pickering 15.07.12 354 BRITISH REVIEW I start this section this month with the sad news that on 03rd July two Tornado GR.4s from 15(F) Sqn crashed in bad weather in the Moray Firth, 25 miles south of Wick. Sadly two crew members are missing presumed dead. While the second crew ejected and were rescued but one crew member later died of his injuries. The remaining crew member is seriously ill in hospital and at this time our thoughts are with him and all the families involved. Another aircraft type has finally gone during July, without ceremony that is, are the last four Tornado F.3s ZE203/GA, ZE794/FL, ZE961/HB and ZH552/HW from QinetiQ Boscombe Down they arrived at Leeming for reduction to spares and produce. The Armed Forces Minister has announced that the Red Arrows will remain at Scampton; they were going to move to Waddington during 2014. It was announced at this year’s Royal International Air Tattoo, Fairford that the A.400M transport aircraft, of which the RAF have ordered 22 aircraft, will be named the Atlas. The first example is expected to be delivered during 2014. The FSTA service has decided that further A330/Voyager conversions which were planned to have been performed by Cobham Aviation Services at Hurn Airport Bournemouth will instead be completed by Airbus Militarty at its Getafé plant near Madrid, Spain. Aircraft three and four will continue to be converted at Hurn, but the remaining 10 aircraft will be converted in Spain. • Cambridgshire Memories of the Cold War Era
Cambridgshire Memories of the Cold War era Our mission: to research, record and archive the local history of the Cold War era ฀ working with Cambridgeshire residents to tell our stories and commemorate 30 years since the Fall of The Berlin Wall. SpyNet is a National Heritage Lottery Funded project, led by New International Theatre Company. Thanks to partners The Norris Museum, Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust, Ramsey Youth Club (Crunch) and The Library Presents. Introduction The following texts are transcriptions of interviews from people who give a variety of personal perspectives on the Cold War. These are mainly from those serving professionally with RAF, USAFE, Civil Defence or the Intelligence services; but also included are the insights of a teenager growing up on a base, an artist who lived on the Soviet side of the Iron Curtain and the memories of people who protested at Molesworth. The memories begin in the '60s and cover the height of the Cold War in the '80s. The contributors all have a connection to Cambridgeshire, highlighting the importance of this period of history for the region. Today the activities have changed, USAFE U2 spy planes no longer fly from Alconbury and the RAF Nimrods no longer fly from Wyton, however cyber-espionage continues apace at undisclosed locations. The physical landscape is changing too with RAF Molesworth, Alconbury and Upwood all facing closure and re-purposing to housing development, but the memories stay with those who lived through a unique historical era. 1 2 contents 1. AIRFORCES MONTHLY 16-pAGE SUPPLEMENT JUNE 2013 Military DisplayEdited by Mark Broadbent Teamsof the World 2013 IR FORCES operate display teams Ato showcase the raw skills of airmanship, precision and teamwork that underpin military flying and to promote awareness and recruitment. They also have an ambassadorial role, promoting an air force and country overseas. Many covered in this supplement display overseas each year and, in some cases, frequently undertake international tours. Teams are also used to promote a country’s aerospace industry, playing informal roles in sales campaigns. As financial constraints continue to affect air force budgets globally, it will be interesting to see if aerobatic teams can maintain their military, political and industrial value. RAF Football Association - E-Bulletin RAF FA CUP ‘THE KEITH CHRISTIE TROPHY’ AND RAF FA PLATE 19/20 UPDATE With the RAF Cup now in full swing, the second round produced some more exciting ties and saw some big names exit the competition. RAF Leeming’s away trip to Akrotiri was the eagerly anticipated tie of the round, however it proved to be a tough trip for the visitors as they were on the receiving end of a heavy 5-1 defeat. SAC Liam Thornton grabbed four of the goals, taking his overall tally to six and making him the current top scorer in the competition. RAF Brize Norton faced the long journey up to Lossiemouth and it proved to be successful as they ground out a 1-0 win with Sgt Dave Wanless scoring the all-important goal, Brize Norton will be hoping for a slightly shorter journey if they are drawn away in the next round. SAC Liam Wood scored his first two goals of the competition helping RAF Northolt to an away win at Wyton with RAF Coningsby also picking up a convincing away victory running out 4-0 winner against JFC Chicksands & RAF Henlow. RAF Honington who have a great history with the competition were knocked out at the hands of RAF Odiham thanks to a single goal from SAC Clarke Goulding. RAF FA E-Bulletin – RAF Cup Update Elsewhere, RAF Shawbury and RAF Marham both scored four goals each to take them through with victories over MOD St Athan and RAF Waddington respectively. RAF Boulmer also strolled through to the next round with an impressive 7-1 victory over RAF Cranwell.

  • Airshow Accident Review 2014
1 AIRSHOW ACCIDENT REVIEW 2014 Des Barker The tenets expressed in this review are those of the author and addresses a sample of significant accidents and incidents at aerial events worldwide in 2014, both during the actual events and during rehearsals and includes, airshows, air races, flypasts, and air capability demonstrations; in fact, any event at which an aircraft is displayed or rehearses for a public air event in which the flow of the event is jeopardised. Des Barker Introduction There is a Frank Sinatra song with lyrics: “When I was seventeen, it was a very good year”, - 2014 could have been a good year for the airshow community had it not been for the seventeen accidents and incidents worldwide resulting in the deaths of ten pilots and injury to one crew member. Most certainly, it was the best year since 2000 in terms of the number of accidents and incidents and also the fact that there were no injuries to spectators although a passenger died being ‘flipped’ during a low level display! As an international airshow community we have continued to reduce Airshow Accidents/Incidents 1998 to 2014 accidents and incidents at airshows; decreasing from 37 in 2010 to 17 in 2014. 40 The question over the past three years has been whether the apparent decrease 35 was attributable to some statistical spike or a genuine all-round improvement to 30 airshow safety worldwide from the contributions of the display pilots, safety 25 officers, air bosses, airshow organisers and spectators. Could it just be that the number of air events have reduced? 20 Unfortunately, there are no accurate figures available for the number of air 15 events worldwide, nor the number of hours flown annually from which to draw 10 scientific conclusions.
