The workshop, attended by more than 110 participants from 22 countries, also provided an opportunity to discuss the latest developments in Triticeae genetics and genomics. FAIRCHILD VISITED MISS SESSIONS: SAN DIEGO 19191 ■ By Nancy Carol Carter n 1939, Kate Sessions received the prestigious Frank N. Meyer Medal for distinguished services in plant introduction by the American Genetics Association. IShe joined the ranks of previously recognized male botanists, including Louis Charles Trabut, a French doctor teaching at the University of Algiers; Henry Nicholas Ridley, an Englishman who learned to tap the rubber tree for latex; Palemon Howard Dorsett, who spent the 1920s identifying plants in China and Japan; and wealthy amateur plant explorers Barbour Lathrop and Allison V. Armour. It was thirty years before another woman received the same honor.2 Sessions was nominated for the award by David Fairchild, plant explorer, botanist and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) official. A newly-explored archive of letters, photographs and manuscripts at the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden expands our knowledge of their relationship. Their seventeen-year-long correspon- dence suggests that he was the most enduring and influential of her professional contacts.3 This article reveals both the professional and the personal nature of their relationship, giving us a more nuanced understanding of Kate Sessions herself. By the end of the nineteenth century, botany had moved almost entirely from its Enlightenment origins as a proper and recommended activity for women and children to a professionalized and almost exclusively male pursuit within the science culture. Some exceptional women made a place for themselves in the field at this early date, but had to overcome barriers. -

Petersen Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology, University of Tennessee Knoxville, TN 37919-1100 Correspondence to: [email protected] Abstract—The Morrill Act of 1862 afforded the US states the opportunity to found state colleges with agriculture as part of their mission—the so-called “land-grant colleges.” The Hatch Act of 1887 gave the same opportunity for agricultural experiment stations as functions of the land-grant colleges, and the “third Morrill Act” (the Smith-Lever Act) of 1914 added an extension dimension to the experiment stations. Overall, the end of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th was a time for growing appreciation for, and growth of institutional education in the natural sciences, especially botany and its specialties, mycology, and phytopathology. This paper outlines a particular genealogy of mycologists and plant pathologists representative of this era. Professor Albert Nelson Prentiss, first of Michigan State then of Cornell, Professor William Russel Dudley of Cornell and Stanford, Professor Mason Blanchard Thomas of Wabash College, and Professor Herbert Hice Whetzel of Cornell Plant Pathology were major players in the scenario. PART II PERSONAL PAPERS AND ORGANIZATIONAL RECORDS Allen, Paul Hamilton, 1911-1963 Collection 1 RG 4/1/5/15 Photographs, 1937-1959 (1.0 linear feet) Paul Allen was a botanist and plantsman of the American tropics. He was student assistant to C. W. Dodge, the Garden's mycologist, and collector for the Missouri Botanical Garden expedition to Panama in 1934. As manager of the Garden's tropical research station in Balboa, Panama, from 1936 to 1939, he actively col- lected plants for the Flora of Panama. He was the representative of the Garden in Central America, 1940-43, and was recruited after the War to write treatments for the Flora of Panama. The photos consist of 1125 negatives and contact prints of plant taxa, including habitat photos, herbarium specimens, and close-ups arranged in alphabetical order by genus and species. A handwritten inventory by the donor in the collection file lists each item including 19 rolls of film of plant communities in El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. The collection contains 203 color slides of plants in Panama, other parts of Central America, and North Borneo. Also included are black and white snapshots of Panama, 1937-1944, and specimen photos presented to the Garden's herbarium. Allen's field books and other papers that may give further identification are housed at the Hunt Institute of Botanical Documentation. Copies of certain field notebooks and specimen books are in the herbarium curator correspondence of Robert Woodson, (Collection 1, RG 4/1/1/3). Gift, 1983-1990. chapter 1 The Archaeology of Maize the domesticators domesticated The story of maize begins at least 9,000 years ago in southwestern Mex- ico as small groups of nomadic people found themselves attracted to stands of a rather tall, bushy tropical grass now known as teosinte (fi gure 1.1). We don’t know what name these early indigenous Mexi- cans had for teosinte, but by the time of the Spanish Conquest there were many names for it, including cincocopi, acecintle, atzitzintle.1 Today evidence of these fi rst farmers and the teosinte plants they har- vested is almost invisible—but we can see some traces left behind by the early descendants of both the plants and the people. For example, pho- tographs of the tiny maize cobs, classifi ed as Zea mays ssp. mays, that were found in Guilá Naquitz cave, Oaxaca, by Kent Flannery and his crew in the mid-1960s show parts of the earliest known individual plants that are descended from an ancestral teosinte plant (fi gures 1.2 and 1.3).2 In order for these cobs, which are directly dated to 6,230 cal BP,3 to have existed, not only did the ancient Oaxaqueños living near Guilá Naquitz cave have to have planted individual seeds, but their ancestors and neighbors also had to have planted and harvested teosinte seeds for hundreds of previous generations. We do not know if these particular early Oaxacan maize plants themselves had descendants. La Universidad de Guadalajara brinda un reconocimiento al trabajo del Dr. Iltis, colaborador nuestro durante tres décadas ininterrumpidas, cuyas aportaciones no sólo representan avances ante los desafíos intelectuales de la investigación básica, sino también en la formación de recursos humanos, y en la aplicación práctica del conocimiento para la conservación de los recursos naturales y alimentarios de un mundo en franco deterioro. Historia personal Hugh H. Iltis nació el 7 de abril de 1925 en Brno, Checoslovaquia. Su padre, el destacado naturista Hugo Iltis, fue profesor de Biología, Botánica y Genética en Brünn Checoslovaquia y profesor de Biología en la Universidad de Virginia. Siendo niño tuvo que migrar a los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica como refugiado cuando su país fue invadido por los nazis. Estimulado por su padre, se interesó en la genética y la botánica, muy pronto se entusiasmó por la Taxonomía y la Evolución de las plantas. Su carrera como botánico inició a muy temprana edad, pues a los 14 años ya había construido su propio herbario, y los ejemplares contaban con sus nombres en latín y descripciones. Estos ejemplares tuvieron que ser vendidos para ayudarse en sus estudios en la Universidad de Tennessee.
