KIANA JACKSON A LOOK BACK AT 2016 Executive Assistant 2016 proved to be one of the busiest in Shine’s history as we focused our attention internationally on very strong adolescent females battling difficult odds.

We completed The Wrong Light and submitted it to festivals before selling it to The Cinema Guild in May for a 2017 release. The Eagle Huntress premiered at Sundance where it was bought by Sony Pictures Classics, and had a wide theatrical release across the US in the fall. Shine also helped with Liyana, which will premiere at festivals in 2017.

Equally exciting was our introduction of IGNITE, a community-based series of film screenings and discussions funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. Screenings have been scheduled coast to coast and continue to grow in number. These supplement the school-based screenings we have done since our inception.

Shine welcomed two new board members, strengthened our organizational structure, and celebrated our second annual gala. By the close of 2016 we began to turn our attention to domestic stories inspired by the presidential election, the number of young Blacks killed by police, and the realities faced by children whose parents are incarcerated. We hope you’ll agree that the resulting documentary series and feature documentaries do these children justice. Thank you for joining us as we continue to tell the stories of ordinary children facing extraordinary challenges. We greatly appreciate your support.

The Eagle Huntress

THE EAGLE HUNTRESS follows Aisholpan, a 13-year-old girl, as she trains to become the first female in twelve generations of her Kazakh family to become an eagle hunter, and rises to the pinnacle of a tradition that has been handed down from father to son for centuries. Set against the breathtaking expanse of the Mongolian steppe, THE EAGLE HUNTRESS features some of the most awe-inspiring cinematography ever captured in a documentary, giving this intimate tale of a young girl’s quest the dramatic force of an epic narrative film.

The Eagle Huntress

The Eagle Huntress premiered at Sundance, was bought by Sony Pictures Classics, re-edited to include a voiceover by Daisy Ridley, then returned to festivals before being officially released theatrically across the US in the late fall with sales to international territories for 2017.

RAISE AWARENESS In addition to the awareness raised through festival awards and theatrical screenings, The Eagle Huntress received rave reviews in the press

Thrilling! A movie that expands your sense of what is possible. – A.O. Scott, The New York Times

Soaring! An enchanting tale – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times

One of the most beautifully shot movies I have ever seen – Melissa Silverstein, Indiewire

A breathtaking documentary that shows when we encourage our daughters, amazing things happen – Christine Estima, Vice

INSPIRE CHANGE Aisholpan's story is already having an effect: A growing number of girls in her Mongolian community have now also sought to train as eagle hunters.

The Wrong Light

A charismatic activist leads a globally-regarded NGO that provides shelter and education for girls rescued from brothels in Northern Thailand. But as the filmmakers meet the girls and their families, discrepancies begin to emerge and the story takes an unexpected turn.

The Wrong Light, which Shine began working on in November 2011, had its festival premiere at the Cleveland International Film Festival in April and went on to be sold for US Distribution to the Cinema Guild and to yesDocu for broadcast in Israel.

RAISE AWARENESS In addition to the awareness raised through festival screenings, The Wrong Light also got some initial press and recognition

The Wrong Light plays like a film noir set in the tropics – The Montclair Times

What begins as a tribute soon becomes a swirling mystery in this film that distinguishes itself from typical documentary fare by crossing the fine line between truth-telling and becoming a champion for one's subjects. Heartbreaking and hopeful all at once: For its smooth editorial transitions, lush cinematography and courageous direction, this year's NJ Films Grand Prize goes to The Wrong Light." – Jill Greenberg Sands, MFF

INSPIRE CHANGE Due to our work on the film and what we uncovered, COSA has been shut down and a warrant issued for Mickey’s arrest (though as of December 2016 he had evaded capture). COSA’s major funder, Hands Across the Water, stepped up to continue sponsoring the girls’ education and found housing for them so they could stay in school.

Liyana

In this documentary/animated film, a talented group of orphaned children in Swaziland collaborate to write an original African tale about Liyana, a girl on a dangerous quest. Inspired by the children’s darkest memories and brightest dreams, their fictional character’s journey reveals parallels between her fate and that of the young storytellers.

Coming 2017 Promote Action

EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS Shine creates free ancillary materials to help diverse audiences engage with the films and the issues we address in them through standards-based curricula for teachers, discussion guides, and creative workshops for youth.

PARTNERSHIPS We always connect with other organizations so our films can serve as a tool for activism.

Shine Global has partnered with the Montclair Film Festival to host IGNITE screenings in their new facility opening in 2017. In 2016, we also sponsored and hosted a screening of the documentary Sonita for a full house of local high school students and led a post-screening discussion on the issue of child marriage.

- 1 8 - PROMOTE ACTION

An Inocente IGNITE workshop IGNITE Shine Global’s IGNITE program introduces award-winning films to underserved youth across the country. Each film is accompanied by a discussion guide and some also include companion arts workshops to:

Create stimulating learning experiences that encourage discussion

Tap into adolescents’ desire to make meaningful social contributions

Increase awareness of other cultures

Develop media literacy skills

Funding from the National Endowment of the Arts allows us to offer some of these screenings for free. Support from Visionary Women brings our films to Southern California.
