Dank:

Als „eine zugegebenermaßen äußerst detaillierte Darstellung“ bezeichnete George F. Kennan seine Studie über die russische Politik im Ersten Weltkrieg und befürchtete: „some may think too much so“. Doch sei der Gegenstand gleichermaßen zu komplex und zu kontrovers, um auf Ausführlichkeit zu verzichten. Kennans Feststellung scheint mir auch für die Beziehungen zwischen den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika und angemessen zu sein. Und auch die vorliegende Studie ist in der Tat bezüglich Umfang und aufgewendeter Lebenszeit weit über die anfänglichen Planungen hinausgewachsen.

Für das Entstehen und vor allem für die Fertigstellung dieser Studie, basierend auf einer von der Philosophischen Fakultät der Universität zu Köln angenommenen Dissertation, bin ich vielen Menschen und Institutionen zu Dank verpflichtet. Mein Betreuer, Professor Dr. Jost Dülffer, hat dieses Projekt von Beginn an unterstützt und mit großer Geduld gefördert. Er hat mir dabei fortwährend alle Freiheiten für eigenständiges Forschen gewährt.
