They offer a vision of the United States as a rational universe in which the physical needs to fight to find its place and to escape what fate has in store for it. Ali and Stephanie, our two characters, do not appear in the short stories, and Craig Davidson’s collection already seems to belong to the prehistory of the project, but the power and brutality of the tale, our desire to use drama, indeed melodrama, to magnify their characters all have their immediate source in those stories.

J A C Q U E S AUDIARD J A C Q U E S AUDIARD French director Jacques Audiard’s latest feature Dheepan won Cannes’ Palme d’Or in 2015 and his critically acclaimed prison film A Prophet (2009) and romantic drama Rust and Bone (2012) made him that rare thing: an internationally renowned filmmaker not in the English language. Despite an auspicious personal heritage, Audiard came late to directing, a writer first and foremost. His stories, wildly varying in subject matter, have in common a fascination with the struggle for identity and the reforging of a self after or through trauma. They are shocking, beautiful and have captivated both audiences and actors like Marion Cotillard and Vincent Cassel. He is soon to make the move to anglophone cinema. Interview Joshua Bullock 82 83 © Jean-Claude Lother Joshua Bullock: The name Audiard is now well known in the world of I don’t know if it is symbolic or poetic; it’s very natural. I don’t say, “Hey, French cinema. How did you get into the film business? bring me a symbol!” These are the things I do. I did fades. I used to put my hand over the lens and take shots like that. I do the same today. Jacques Audiard: My father was a very well known scriptwriter and director in France who left behind a huge legacy. Cinema for him was JB: There’s a scene where Emmanuelle Devos looks in the mirror in Read a job, a way to earn a living. He was of a literary bent.

Salomon, nearly 80 years old, trie s at all cost to enjoy every single instant. Fleeing his past, the war, the dead, his exterminated relatives, he throws himself body and soul into the quest for one or more "companions" to ease his old days, takes tap-dancing classes under the direction of Fred Astaire, and categorically refuses to incarnate the traditional clichés of old age imposed by our society. It's at this moment in his life that he meets Violet. For her part, Geneviève dreams of but one thing: peacefully continuing to be being treated like a child by her home helper, defender and guardian angel, Mr Mootoosamy. She's gradually decided that the constraints of reality weighed down too heavily on her shoulders, and, takes mischievous delight in doing solely whatever comes into her head, that is to say, very little indeed. Unfortunately, finances are at rock bottom, and at Mr Mootoosamy's, Geneviève is compelled to emerge from her torpor and act.

Paul, now an anthropologist, prepares to leave Tajikistan and reflects on his life. He has a series of flashbacks that unfold in three episodes (newcomer Quentin Dolmaire portrays Paul as an adolescent). The first includes his childhood in Roubaix, his mother's attacks of madness and his father's alienating depression. He next remembers his trip to the USSR, where a clandestine mission led him to offer up his own identity to a young Russian, whom he considers a phantom twin for the remainder of his life. He remembers himself at nineteen in Roubaix, his sister Delphine, his cousin Bob, the parties with Pénélope, Mehdi and Kovalki, the friend who was to betray him. He remembers University life in Paris most of all, he remembers Esther (Lou Roy-Lecollinet), a beautiful, rude, haughty soul and the love of his life.

But love can be light and painful, cheerful and bitter. An elegy to femininity and passion with musical outbursts. Director’s Statement There are two love stories being told in Beloved; two generations, a mother and a daughter, both unable to contemplate a life of loneliness. The first story reads like a legend. It begins during the inarguable Golden Age of love: the 60’s, with the sexual revolution and women’s liberation movement. Followed by the second story; the 90’s, a life feared of commitment and the AIDS virus. I belong to the second story. I belong to the generation that discovered love in the time of AIDS, a time when precaution was proclaimed a dogma and when death was a shadow that hung over all our moments of abandonment. I pictured a glorious era, an illusion no doubt, in which the people you fell in love with, the people you desired, had not yet become threats to you.

  • Ismael's Ghosts
ISMAEL’S GHOSTS A FILM BY ARNAUD DESPLECHIN DIRECTOR’S NOTE It’s the portrait of Ivan, a diplomat who journeys through the world without understanding it. It’s the portrait of Ismael, a film director who journeys through his life without understanding it either. It’s the return of a woman from amongst the dead. It’s also a spy movie. Five films compressed into one, like Pollock’s female nudes. Ismael is frenzied. And the script grew frenzied alongside him. And yet up in his attic, Ismael tries to hold all the threads of the fiction together… I described my project to a friend: “I think I’ve invented a pile of plates of fiction that I will break against the screen. When they’re all broken, the film will be finished.” Potlatch, fictional overabundance… But why did I need to shatter them, these fragments of stories? It’s because three women were born from the shards. A woman loved, the memory of a woman vanished, and an impish friend. These fictions are spent for them. Throughout the twists and turns of the plot, the task was to speak clearly and straightforwardly. I wanted each scene to come off as raw, brutal. Blows the spectator can’t dodge. It has often been necessary for me to give my film references. For “Ismael’s Ghosts”, I had to forge ahead alone, even if I live surrounded by the films I love. Certain great films eye me dispassionately: “8½”, “Providence”… I’ve seen them a hundred times, I revere them, and they are of no help to me.
