They offer a vision of the United States as a rational universe in which the physical needs to fight to find its place and to escape what fate has in store for it. Ali and Stephanie, our two characters, do not appear in the short stories, and Craig Davidson’s collection already seems to belong to the prehistory of the project, but the power and brutality of the tale, our desire to use drama, indeed melodrama, to magnify their characters all have their immediate source in those stories.

THE BEAT MY HEART SKIPPED [De Battre Mon Coeur S'est Arrêté] 55TH Berlin Film Festival IN COMPETITION ROMAIN DURIS in a film by JAQUES AUDIARD with Emmanuelle Devos, Neils Arestrup, Linh Dan-Phan, Aure Atika, Jonathan Zaccai, Gilles Cohen Written by Jacques Audiard and Tonino Benacquista based on “Fingers”, a film written and directed by James Toback PLEASE NOTE: the film title for the Australian release is “The Beat My Heart Skipped” not “The Beat That My Heart Skipped” “The Beat My Heart Skipped is scorching melodrama…with an Oscar-worthy performance from Romain Duris…” Harvey S. Karten, COMPUSERVE “Audiard's latest stunner recounts the tale of Tom (Romain Duris), a real estate broker following in his father's footsteps whose miserable profession…stands in stark contrast to his dream of being (like his mother) a concert pianist. Tom is a man at odds with himself, his nimble fingers employed for contradictorily aggressive and artistic purposes, and Audiard's mise-en-scène—preoccupied with the contrast between light and dark, moral and immoral, hope and resignation—deftly enhances his film's meditation on the contrary nature of masculinity and filial loyalty.” Slant Magazine CAST + CREW TOM DIRECTOR Jacques Audiard Romain Duris SCREENPLAY Jacques Audiard Tonino Benacquista ROBERT Based on “Fingers” Niels Arestrup a film written & directed by James Toback ORIGINAL SCORE Alexandre Desplat MIAO-LIN PHOTOGRAPHY Stephane Fontaine Linh-Dan Pham EDITING Juliette Welfling SOUND Brigitte Taillandier ALINE Pascal Villard Aure Atika Cyril Holtz Phillippe

SAM (Armand Verdure) is his son, but he hardly knows him. Homeless, penniless and friendless, Ali takes refuge with his sister ANNA (Corinne Masiero) in Antibes, in the south of France. There things improve immediately. She puts them up in her garage, she takes the child under her wing and the weather is glorious. Ali, a man of formidable size and strength, gets a job as a bouncer in a nightclub. He comes to the aid of STEPHANIE (Marion Cotillard) during a nightclub brawl. Aloof and beautiful, Stéphanie seems unattainable, but in his frank manner Ali leaves her his phone number anyway. Stephanie trains orca whales at Marineland. When a performance ends in tragedy, a call in the night again brings them togtether. When Ali sees her next, Stephanie is confined to a wheel chair : she has lost her legs and quite a few illusions.
