But what Dawkins’s crew confirms with the dissection is that instead of going straight from brain to larynx, this nerve runs from the brain all the way down the giraffe’s neck and into its chest where it U-turns and runs back up the neck again and then finally connects to the larynx. In large giraffes, this nerve can be more than 16 feet long.
