Maize and Precolonial Africa∗ Jevan Cherniwchany Juan Moreno-Cruzz Alberta School of Business School of Economics University of Alberta Georgia Institute of Technology August 2017 Abstract Columbus's arrival in the New World triggered an unprecedented movement of people and crops across the Atlantic Ocean. We study an overlooked part of this Columbian Exchange: the effects of New World crops in Africa. Specifically, we test the hypothesis that the introduction of maize during the exchange increased population density and Trans-Atlantic slave exports in precolonial Africa. We find robust empirical support for these predictions. We also examine the effects of maize on economic growth and conflict, and find that it had little effect on either channel. Our results suggest that rather than stimulating development, the introduction of maize simply increased the supply of slaves from Africa during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Among other things, this so-called \Columbian Exchange" led to the movement of both peoples and crops across the Atlantic Ocean.1 While most of this movement took place between Europe and the Americas, it is clear that Africa was also affected in profound ways. -

What natural resources were used by the Ancestral Puebloan people that lived at Cliff Palace? How did the natural environment effect the way in which Ancestral Puebloan built their shelters? Why did the Ancestral Puebloan people migrate from Cliff Palace? Contextual Paragraph Mesa Verde National Park is located in Montezuma County, Colorado in the southwestern corner of the state. As of its nomination to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978 it had more than 800 archaeological sites recorded or in the process of inventory. Today there are nearly 5,000 documented sites including about 600 cliff dwellings. Mesa Verde, which means, “green table” was inhabited by Ancestral Puebloans, a branch of the San Juan Anasazi Indians, from about 580 CE to 1300 CE. Today it is the most extensive and well-developed example of prehistoric cliff dwellings. Archaeologists have identified distinct periods during Mesa Verde’s habitation based on artifacts and ruins discovered there. The Cliff Palace was constructed during the Pueblo III period. According to dendrochronology (tree-ring dating), Cliff Palace construction and refurbishment happened from 1190 CE – 1260 CE, although most was done during a 20- year span. -

Miceli** Abstract: Throughout history, religious and political authorities have had a mysterious attraction to each other. Rulers have established state religions and adopted laws with religious origins, sometimes even claiming to have divine powers. We propose a political economy approach to theocracy, centered on the legitimizing relationship between religious and political authorities. Making standard assumptions about the motivations of these authorities, we identify the factors favoring the emergence of theocracy, such as the organization of the religion market, monotheism vs. polytheism, and strength of the ruler. We use two sets of data to test the implications of the model. We first use a unique data set that includes information on over three hundred polities that have been observed throughout history. We also use recently available cross-country data on the relationship between religious and political authorities to examine these issues in current societies. The results provide strong empirical support for our arguments about why in some states religious and political authorities have maintained independence, while in others they have integrated into a single entity. History Our main enquiry question this term: What was life like in the Ancient Kingdom of Benin? Today’s enquiry: Why is it important to learn about Benin in school? Benin Where is Benin? Benin is a region in Nigeria, West Africa. Benin was once a civilisation of cities and towns, powerful Kings and a large empire which traded over long distances. The Benin Empire 900-1897 Benin began in the 900s when the Edo people settled in the rainforests of West Africa. By the 1400s they had created a wealthy kingdom with a powerful ruler, known as the Oba. As their kingdom expanded they built walls and moats around Benin City which showed incredible town planning and architecture. What do you think of Benin City? Benin craftsmen were skilful in Bronze and Ivory and had strong religious beliefs. During this time, West Africa invented the smelting (heating and melting) of copper and zinc ores and the casting of Bronze. What do you think that this might mean? Why might this be important? What might this invention allowed them to do? This allowed them to produced beautiful works of art, particularly bronze sculptures, which they are famous for. Europeans tried to trade with Benin in the 15 and 16 century, especially for spices like black pepper. Prehistoric and Early Historic Farming and Settlement Patterns LYNN MARIE ALEX Our understanding of farming during the long period of human history prior to the advent of written records (prehistory) is largely attributable to the work of two types of scientists: bota- nists and archaeologists. The botanist studies the physical re- mains (seeds, seed impressions, pollen) of early plants and traces the gradual process of their domestication from the original wild forms. The archaeologist aids in the discovery of these remains through the excavation of archaeological sites and provides in- sight into the cultural context in which they were found. Through the work of these scientists, the earliest evidence of cultivation in the New World has been discovered in Mexico and Peru. Most likely, the processes that led to the domestication of plants occurred independently in each of these regions at about the same time. Many of the most common food crops in the mod- ern American diet were first domesticated by pre-Columbian New World peoples. These include vegetables such as white and sweet potatoes; maize (corn); pumpkins; squash; lima, kidney. Copyright © 1983 by the South Dakota State Historical Society. All Rights Reserved.
