En dépit des influences dominantes de l’Église dans les communautés métisses qui se sont exercées dans le but d’écarter et de dénier notre héritage autochtone et notre spiritualité autochtone. Nous sommes encore capables de dire que nous sommes fiers d’être Métis. Nous sommes résilients comme une vivace. Aussi beaux qu’une fleur sauvage. Janvier et une célébration de sa résilience, une déclaration rendue encore plus puissante par l’inclusion d’une inscription très longue, peinte de sa propre main, à l’arrière de la toile. Il y expose en détail les pertes qu’il a subies alors qu’il a passé dix ans au pension- nat indien Blue Quills : la perte de son enfance, de sa langue, de sa culture, de ses coutumes, de ses parents, de ses grands-parents et de ses croyances tra- ditionnelles. Il a été enlevé de la terre qu’il aimait et il a été sévèrement puni pour avoir parlé sa langue — Denesu’linÈ. Le fait d’être un petit garçon n’avait pas d’importance, « plusieurs, plusieurs sont morts le corps meurtri et l’esprit et le coeur brisés ». Vous trouverez ci-jointe l’inscription au complet. I argue that the discursive conventions of settler-Canadian art appreciation, especially those geared towards Inuit creative production, have resonances with the political strategies that Canada uses to prove effective occupation—a term from international law—of the Arctic. My research intervenes in this context by showing how art appreciation encourages modes of effective occupation that are not obviously political, insofar as these modes operate in the realm of affect. Ce tableau ne vise pas tellement à réprouver les enseignements du Christ, mais davantage à blâmer ceux qui ont transmis son message, là où commence la rupture avec la bonté et la sainteté. Il y a eu de bonnes personnes qui se sont occupées des enfants là où des violences ont été commises sous le couvert Cheminement du Canada vers la vérité et la réconciliation la vérité vers Canada du Cheminement de la chrétienté. His family was engaged in hunting and fishing along the western Arctic coast. At the age of eight, he was sent away to residential school and for the next 11 years was separated from his family and culture except for two months each summer. Much to the sadness of his parents, he was soon unable to speak his native Inuktitut fluently. Upon leaving the residential school system at the age of 18, he found himself in a cultural "no man's land". He had always had a strong interest in art, which became the avenue through which he was able to reconnect with his cultural roots. Opening in 2020, the Winnipeg Art Gallery’s Inuit Art Centre is the first large-scale exhibition space in the world that focuses on Inuit art and culture. Located in Cape Dorset, the Kenojuak Cultural Centre and Print Shop (2018), serves as a cultural centre for the production/exhibition of Inuit art in the north. Looking at the development of these two institutions within the historiography of Inuit cultural stewardship and Canadian institutional culture, I examine, through a thematic examination of print, news articles and social media posts, how new geographic centres of Inuit art are changing accessibility to Inuit culture, particularly in relation to the communities that produce it. A groundbreaking moment for Canada and Inuit visual culture, the 40,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art addition to the gallery houses its unrivalled collection of nearly 14,000 works of Inuit art. Although the concept for Qaumajuq at the WAG stretches back to the 1950s when the gallery first acquired Inuit art, an Inuit art centre became a priority for Dr. Stephen Borys when he assumed the role of director and CEO in 2008. I recently caught up with Borys to discuss Qaumajuq and the highlights of this extraordinary new addition to our country’s cultural landscape, including its architectural design, Inuktitut name, and the landmark inaugural exhibition INUA. Notably, Abraham Anghik Ruben is the first contemporary Inuit sculptor to be given a one-man show at this institution. The exhibition was curated by Bernadette Driscoll Engelstad and contributed a scholarly essay for the exhibition catalogue. The exhibition featured 23 large sculptures that have never been seen outside Canada. The sculptures are created in soapstone, ivory and whalebone. His fatherWilliam Ruben,whose Inuinnaqtun name was Esoktak,was a great hunter and trapper, able to supplement his family income in order to buy goods at the Paulatuk [formerly Letty Harbour] trading post in the Northwest Territories run by the Roman Catholic Missions in the 1930s.
