  • Multifaith Continuing Education: Leading Faithfully in a Religiously Diverse World
Justus Baird: Multifaith Ed for “Lifelong Call to Learn” 9/17/08 1 Multifaith Continuing Education: Leading Faithfully in a Religiously Diverse World Justus N. Baird As a rabbi who directs a multifaith center in a Christian seminary, I often get asked about multifaith education. People ask me, “What curriculum should I use?” or “How can we teach our students about other religions?” Even more often I get asked, “Do you know a Muslim I can invite to speak at our program?” But rarely do I get asked, “Why should we be doing interfaith education at all?” A rabbinic colleague of mine put it to me this way: “I just can’t articulate why interfaith is important to focus on,” he said. What worries him most about serving his congregation is not how much his congregants know about other faiths. “Other than making sure we can all just get along, why does this matter?” he asked. Let’s be honest: most of us know precious little about our own religious traditions, so why should we spend our valuable time learning about other faiths? The aim of this chapter is to articulate what multifaith education is, why it should be part of any continuing education program, and address some of the challenges that confront multifaith education. Part one answers the ‘why do interfaith?’ question articulated by my colleague and makes the case for including multifaith learning in any continuing education program. Part two defines multifaith education and describes various approaches to multifaith education. Part three articulates the challenges and barriers to multifaith education.

  • PARISH MAGAZINE MARCH 2 0 2 0 50P What the Ipswich Road Roundabout Can Teach Us About Lent
ORDINARY PEOPLE. EXT RAORDINARY GOD. PARISH MAGAZINE MARCH 2 0 2 0 50p What the Ipswich Road roundabout can teach us about Lent For those who need to travel regularly around the Ipswich Road rounda- bout, the (I’m assured) impending completion of the roadworks must be a cause for celebration. When there are distractions, obstacles, and frus- trations making our daily lives more difficult, it’s easy (and quite natural) to become obsessed, dejected, angry - or all three! At the heart of Lent is the idea that – unlike the Ipswich Road roadworks – we have it within ourselves to remove some of the distractions, obsta- cles and frustrations in our lives that get between us and God’s love for us. Actually, that’s not quite right: we don’t do this ourselves – through our own power alone – but by asking for God’s assistance. And making that prayer for God’s help is itself part of the solution. We follow in a very long tradition of people asking God for assistance! “Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud, be gracious to me and answer me!” “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” Instead of trying to remove those things which distract us from, or ob- struct, God’s love by obsessing about them and allowing them to loom ever larger, we should bring them to God and accept his help. When we do this, we turn our face to God, we reach out to God: we repent! So maybe the real danger each Lent isn’t the obstructions and distrac- tions in themselves, but thinking we can deal with them without God, rather than reaching out for God? When we reach out, we avoid the temptation to treat self-denial as if it is some ‘holy’ act of self-harm (which God never wants for us).

  • Interfaith Formation for Religious Leaders in a Multifaith Society: Between Meta-Spiritualities and Strong Religious Profiles
Interfaith Formation for Religious Leaders in a Multifaith Society: Between Meta-Spiritualities and Strong Religious Profiles Tabitha Walther Religious leaders today need new skills to meet the religiously pluralistic societies in which they serve. The aim of this essay is to explore this plur- alistic challenge and find approaches that would effectively educate relig- ious leaders for the multireligious context in which they will serve as religious professionals. Cultural and religious diversity is not new. What is new is that this plur- alism is experienced by every citizen and not just by cultural or religious mi- norities. Western societies have been pluralized. Migration and globalization have hastened this process of pluralization in ways previously unknown. Re- ligious leaders for today and tomorrow need to develop tools to serve effec- tively in a multireligious context. They will not just minister to their own people, but beyond their own faith traditions, in between them, and within multiple religious traditions. This is true for a religious community that is multi-religious at its boundaries, as well as for public institutions with multi- religious populations, such as prisons, hospitals, schools, and universities. Tabitha Walther, LTheol, lecturer and trained hospital chaplain, Faculty of Theology, The University of Basel, Missionstrasse 17a, 4055 Basel, Switzerland (E-mail: Tabitha.Walther @unibas.ch). Reflective Practice: Formation and Supervision in Ministry WALTHER 129 Religious pluralism knows many manifestations and is known in all religious traditions. People who are grounded in multiple religious trad- itions, in New Age thought, or people who combine teachings from various religious traditions, ask for spiritual support at critical life moments.

  • Episcopacy in the Diocese of Chelmsford: a New Bishop Of
Episcopacy in the Diocese of Chelmsford: A new Bishop of Bradwell November 2017 DRAFT Contents 1. Introduction 3 2. A Vision for the Diocese of Chelmsford 6 3. Overview of the Diocese of Chelmsford 8 4. The Episcopal Areas and Archdeaconries 9 5. Role description and Person Specification 10 6. The Bradwell Episcopal Area 13 7. Working together 19 Appendix: The diocese and its people 20 1. Introduction What sort of episcopal oversight, leadership and ministry do we need in the diocese of Chelmsford? Since 1984 the answer to this question was the area system. That is, a system of oversight and governance, whereby the diocese was organised into three areas, with virtually all episcopal responsibilities delegated to the Area Bishop. This in turn leaves the diocesan free for strategic oversight within the diocese and for national responsibilities. The diocese of Chelmsford is what you might call, a small province rather than a big diocese. However, for about the same amount of time there has also been a recognition that this model wasn’t working as well as it might. The sheer size of the diocese has always stretched our leadership structures and resources. In 1989 a decision was made to create a fourth episcopal area, but this was never implemented beyond creating a new archdeaconry of Harlow in 1993. The question was raised several times and particularly by Bishop John Gladwin. Stephen Cottrell was enthroned as the tenth Bishop of Chelmsford in November 2010. He was appointed with a clear brief to help the Church in Essex and East London become more intentionally missional and evangelistic in all its ministry.

  • The Prevent Strategy
EMBARGOED UNTIL TUESDAY 8 TH SEPTEMBER 2009 www.taxpayersalliance.com Council Spending Uncovered II No.5: THE PREVENT STRATEGY The Prevent Strategy is part of the Government’s response to the threat of terrorism from Islamist extremists. Aimed at stopping people from becoming terrorists, the Government has given Local Authorities money to fund projects administered by community groups, as well as giving out grants themselves directly. However, there have been ongoing concerns about the groups receiving funding and it has not been clear how taxpayers’ money has been spent. The TaxPayers’ Alliance has used Freedom of Information requests to compile the data that the Government was unable to give Paul Goodman MP earlier this year. So for the first time, spending on the Prevent Strategy is listed in detail to show how much each organisation received individually in the 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 financial years. The key findings of this report are: Over £12 million has so far been given out by local authorities to fund community groups through Prevent projects. There has been insufficient monitoring of how Prevent money is spent, with the Government unsure of what groups Councils have disbursed money to. This paper managed to get more detailed information on local authorities’ Preventing Violent Extremism grants than that obtained by Paul Goodman MP through parliamentary questions. The TPA has been able to ascertain how much each organisation received, rather than the total amount each local authority received – an itemised account of PVE expenditure. Around £850,000 has been given to the Muslim Council of Britain’s official affiliates through different Prevent funding streams.
