Scott Howard, Ph.D. Degree Date: June 2009 Abstract This dissertation examines the influence of Cambridge Platonism and materialist philosophy on Mary Astell’s early feminism. More specifically, I argue that Astell co- opts Descartes’s theory of regulating the passions in his final publication, The Passions of the Soul, to articulate a comprehensive, enlightenment and body friendly theory of feminine self-esteem that renders her feminism modern. Previously, Astell’s feminism has been viewed as elitist, effete and contradictory to her conservative political commitments as a Tory apologist in the last years of the seventeenth century. Recently, scholars have read her work in paradoxically contradictory ways -- as barely feminism at all or as prefiguring radical feminist agendas that deny women’s difference. To this point, only scant attention has been paid to Astell’s treatment of the passions and, therefore, to her attunement to the problem of women’s feminine embodiment in a Renaissance context. My analysis of Astell’s theory of feminine self-esteem follows both textual and contextual cues, thus allowing for a reorientation of contemporary analyses of her early feminism vis-a-vis contemporary feminist theory. The textual cues I analyze are found throughout her first four publications but especially in her second Serious Proposal to the Ladies, which constitutues a robust philosophical defense of her proposed academy for women. An entire chapter in this ii text is devoted to her use of Descartes’s theory of regulating the passions to render women more substantial and inherently worthy. This rendering becomes more concrete in Astell’s sarcastic fourth publication, Reflections Upon Marriage, as she employs the language of the social contract to depict wives as contractual slaves. Her assertion, I argue, is theoretically consistent when read in light of her, by then, fully developed theory of women’s inherent worth, since this theory is based on the enlightenment principles of self-mastery, independence and self-preservation. Contextually, I align Astell’s early feminism in a dialogic sense to the Continental “querelle des femmes,” especially as presented in writings by Christine de Pizan and Agrippa. Astell, I argue, contributes to the “querelle” by framing the feminist problem she wishes to solve (women’s inherent equality despite bodily “inferiority”) in a robust philosophical manner that uncannily prefigures Wollstonecraft’s call for the universalization of human virtues and the reform of of women’s education. iii Acknowledgements Without the help of my mentors, parents, and friends this project could not have been completed. Ruth Perry’s characterization of Astell in the following passage is typical of this trend. She writes, All the contradictions of the period we call the ‘enlightenment’ were embodied in the life and writings of Mary Astell, a feminist intellectual who lived from 1666 to 1731. She argued for women’s right to an independent intellectual life, yet she upheld absolute monarchy in the state. She believed in Reason but distrusted the materialism of the new way of ideas. (357) This approach of highlighting contradictions within Astell’s work has led to corresponding contradictions with respect to how her feminism is interpreted by contemporary scholars. For example, in a recent collection of essays Hilda Smith characterizes Astell’s feminism as “radical” while Sharon Achinstein regards Astell’s early work as barely feminism at all (204). This study, by contrast, takes part in what William Kolbrener has termed the “third phase” of Astell scholarship. He defines this stage as participating in “the recovery of the linguistic or discursive contexts of particular utterances. As ‘texts are concerned with their own questions, and not with ours’” (6). This approach, borrowing as it does from the Cambridge school of history, aims to avoid anachronism and prolepsis in the reading of early modern women’s texts, Astell’s in particular. Along these lines, a new emphasis on consistency within Astell’s corpus is 1 being highlighted, as when E. Derek Taylor writes of the “remarkable degree of consistency [Astell] maintains . throughout her major works” (179) This study is situated firmly within the third phase of Astell scholarship with its emphasis on consistency and close contextual/interdisciplinary analaysis. My goal is to more accurately understand Astell’s early feminism, her position within (as opposed to marginally opposed to) foundational philosophical and political debates of the seventeenth century, and to renew interest in her relevance to modern incarnations of feminist theory. In this manner I follow the lead of scholars like Alice Sowaal, who has presented what she calls Astell’s original “theory of mind,” and Lisa Shapiro, who discerns in the confessional style of Princess Elisabeth’s letters to Descartes a legitimate, if unsystematic, way of “doing” philosophy. Up to this point, most of the interdisciplinary scholarship concerning Astell’s corpus is concerned with her rationalist framework, including her early flirtation with materialist philosophy that she later repudiated in her final publication, The Christian Religion (1705). This dissertation, by contrast, privileges the influence of materialism upon the development of Astell’s early feminism, a topic that has received only scant attention to this point. More specifically, I argue that Astell’s early feminism anticipates modern incarnations of feminist theory because of its body-firendly orientation that arises from her original use of Descartes’s theory of regulating the passions, otherwise known as his moral theory. Astell’s use of Descartes’s moral theory in the service of her feminist goals is not explicitly stated anywhere within her first four publications. Thus, my methodology in regards to discerning

    Early Modern Women Philosophers and the History of Philosophy EILEEN O’NEILL It has now been more than a dozen years since the Eastern Division of the APA invited me to give an address on what was then a rather innovative topic: the published contributions of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century women to philosophy.1 In that address, I highlighted the work of some sixty early modern women. I then said to the audience, “Why have I presented this somewhat interesting, but nonetheless exhausting . overview of seventeenth- and eigh- teenth-century women philosophers? Quite simply, to overwhelm you with the presence of women in early modern philosophy. It is only in this way that the problem of women’s virtually complete absence in contemporary histories of philosophy becomes pressing, mind-boggling, possibly scandalous.” My presen- tation had attempted to indicate the quantity and scope of women’s published philosophical writing. It had also suggested that an acknowledgment of their contributions was evidenced by the representation of their work in the scholarly journals of the period and by the numerous editions and translations of their texts that continued to appear into the nineteenth century. But what about the status of these women in the histories of philosophy? Had they ever been well represented within the histories written before the twentieth century? In the second part of my address, I noted that in the seventeenth century Gilles Menages, Jean de La Forge, and Marguerite Buffet produced doxogra- phies of women philosophers, and that one of the most widely read histories of philosophy, that by Thomas Stanley, contained a discussion of twenty-four women philosophers of the ancient world.

    The 'Singular' Utopia in Margaret Cavendish's Blazing World In Hye Ha Singularity simultaneously intrigued, haggled, suppressed, and finally epitomized Margaret Cavendish's entire life. Through her strikingly indecorous costumes, similarly improper command of language, eagerness to participate in the public sphere, and audacious attempts to publish her own works in her lifetime, the Duchess of Newcastle craved for social recognition of her originality. Most of her attempts at self-fashioning, however, engendered manifold ridicules and foulmouthed criticisms." As a way to defend herself against such odium, Cavendish resorted to the class privilege bolstered by her marriage to William Cavendish and false modesty - a commonplace rhetoric that female writers adopted in proclaiming and protecting their authorship. Yet, what is 'singular' about Cavendish is that she created her own world within narratives; in so doing, I believe, she could gain a genuine sense of ownershiplauthorship. This unfathomable extent of Cavendish's anxiety and ambition is disclosed 1) John Evelyn's ballad depicting "cava1iere"-like Cavendish is frequently referred, for it conveyed the degree of bewilderment that her contemporaries felt toward her. II, pp. 1066-9. Please cite the published version.] FEMALE Philosophers There is a rich and diverse tradition of women philosophers in the history of British thought. Scholars have only recently begun to acknowledge the true extent of this tradition. In the past, the few women thinkers who were recognized were seen as the followers or helpmeets of their more famous male peers. A few women were regarded as philosophers in their own right, but typically only in so far as their ideas conformed to accepted paradigms of philosophy. If the women’s texts did not fit these paradigms, then those texts tended to be examined in a piecemeal fashion or ignored altogether. More recently, however, there has been a shift in perspective in the historiography of women’s philosophy. Some scholars assert that if women’s writings do not fit our modern paradigms, then it is the paradigms that have to be abandoned or re-evaluated, not the texts. The study of women’s ideas enables us to see that British philosophy in earlier periods is much more varied and complex than modern philosophers tend to acknowledge. There is now an awareness that in early modern philosophy the lines between politics, morality, theology, metaphysics, and science were often blurred. Many women who would not pass as philosophers today were almost certainly regarded as philosophers in that time.

There has been, of late, something of a small scholarly renaissance on the late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century thinker, Mary Astell. She has long been held in high esteem for her three feminist tracts, for which we now have modern editions, A Serious Proposal to the Ladies (1694), A Serious Proposal to the Ladies, Part II (1697) and Reflections on Marriage (1700). Astell’s Tory politics and robust stance against Dissenters, reli- gious toleration, and all Whig principles have also engendered scholarly interest. In 1996, Patricia Springborg published two of the three polemics Astell authored in the age of Queen Anne — A Fair Way with Dissenters and Their Patrons (a response to Daniel Defoe’s More Short Ways with Dissenters) and Impartial Enquiry into the Causes of the Civil War (a response to White Kennett’s A Compassionate Enquiry into the Causes of the Civil War), all published in 1704 — in the Cambridge series on the History of Political Thought. Finally, Astell’s keen understanding of and engagement in the philosophical milieu of her time has also captured the attention of scholars such as E. Derek Taylor and Melvyn New, who edited in 2004 her epistolary conversation with the Neo-Platonist, John Norris, Letters Concerning the Love of God (1694).

    WILLIAM THOMPSON AND ANNA WHEELER: EQUALITY AND UTILITARIANISM IN THE 19TH CENTURY by Laura Rae Kelly A thesis submitted to the Department of Political Studies In conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (July, 2015) Copyright © Laura Rae Kelly, 2015 Abstract This dissertation examines the work of William Thompson and Anna Wheeler in relation to more prominent feminist political theorists of the period. It argues that, read in light of Thompson and Wheeler’s Appeal of One Half the Human Race (Appeal), John Stuart Mill’s The Subjection of Women (Subjection) represents a step backward in the history of feminist political thought. Mill’s Subjection reproduces many of the limitations in Mary Wollstonecraft’s groundbreaking Vindication of the Rights of Woman (Vindication), limitations that had been overcome by Thompson and Wheeler’s Appeal, which was published in between the publication of Vindication and Subjection. These limitations center on the relationship between women’s access to self-government and happiness, the economy, and the lack of compensation for domestic and reproductive labor. Unlike Appeal, Vindication and Subjection limit women’s freedoms by maintaining women’s obligations to perform unpaid labor within the private sphere. Vindication and Subjection are unable to recognize women’s biological difference without reducing women’s role to that difference. Thompson and Wheeler resolve the tension between capitalism and gender equality by making the case for radically democratic communities of mutual co-operation, where all useful labor, including reproductive labor, is compensated. They use utilitarianism to advance this argument, but some contemporary scholars describe them as conservative utilitarians.
