William Thompson and Anna Wheeler: Equality and Utilitarianism in the 19Th Century WILLIAM THOMPSON AND ANNA WHEELER: EQUALITY AND UTILITARIANISM IN THE 19TH CENTURY by Laura Rae Kelly A thesis submitted to the Department of Political Studies In conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (July, 2015) Copyright © Laura Rae Kelly, 2015 Abstract This dissertation examines the work of William Thompson and Anna Wheeler in relation to more prominent feminist political theorists of the period. It argues that, read in light of Thompson and Wheeler’s Appeal of One Half the Human Race (Appeal), John Stuart Mill’s The Subjection of Women (Subjection) represents a step backward in the history of feminist political thought. Mill’s Subjection reproduces many of the limitations in Mary Wollstonecraft’s groundbreaking Vindication of the Rights of Woman (Vindication), limitations that had been overcome by Thompson and Wheeler’s Appeal, which was published in between the publication of Vindication and Subjection. These limitations center on the relationship between women’s access to self-government and happiness, the economy, and the lack of compensation for domestic and reproductive labor. Unlike Appeal, Vindication and Subjection limit women’s freedoms by maintaining women’s obligations to perform unpaid labor within the private sphere. Vindication and Subjection are unable to recognize women’s biological difference without reducing women’s role to that difference. Thompson and Wheeler resolve the tension between capitalism and gender equality by making the case for radically democratic communities of mutual co-operation, where all useful labor, including reproductive labor, is compensated. They use utilitarianism to advance this argument, but some contemporary scholars describe them as conservative utilitarians. I argue to the contrary, that because Thompson and Wheeler’s utilitarianism is ‘indirect’ and is informed by both a rich account of the self and a relational understanding of happiness, that it is not i incompatible with arguments for greater social and economic equality. ii Acknowledgements This dissertation is greatly indebted to the advice and expertise of my supervisors: Andrew Lister and Eleanor MacDonald.     Marx and Feminist Economics Notes for a presentation by Diane Elson at Conference on Studying Modern Capitalism- The Relevance of Marx Today At Institute for International Political Economy at the Berlin School of Economics and Law July 2018 Introduction Feminist economics emerged as a distinct body of work in economics in the 1990s, with the founding of the International Association for Feminist Economics (1992), the journal Feminist Economics (1995) and the publication of the Elgar Companion to Feminist Economics (Peterson and Lewis, eds, 1999). It is unified by a concern with gender equality and women’s rights and well- being, and the application of economic thought to analyse gender inequality and women’s lack of rights and inadequate well-being. Of course, a concern with these issues is not altogether new in political economy. The Introduction to the Elgar Companion identified as examples John Stuart Mill and Harriet Taylor Mill, Friedrich Engels, and Torstein Veblen. The variety of approach exemplified in these examples continues in today’s feminist economics, which is eclectic in the kinds of economic theory and analytical tools that are utilised. The first issue of Feminist Economics included a critique of Becker’s theory of the family, a critique of the use that mainstream economists make of the story of Robinson Crusoe, an econometric test of the influence of social/institutional variables on behaviour within families, a debate between a neoclassical economist and an institutionalist economist on determinants of women’s labour force participation in USA, and a paper about caring labour that compares neoclassical and institutionalist perspectives.

Usually the arguments for answering “yes” to this question go something like the following: The application of RCT has proved to be a powerful tool in economics and the social sciences, leading to clear and rigorous insights unattainable from less precise methods. There- fore, by also harnessing this power, the disciplines in the humanities could advance toward be- coming more elegant, rational, and forceful in their explorations of human behavior. As an economist, I’d like to address this argument on its home ground. Has the use of RCT advanced economics in good and useful ways? More precisely, what are the disciplinary values adopted in economics according to which the application of RCT has been judged a “success”? Is this system of values one we want to continue to endorse even in economics, not to mention more generally? This essay argues that the advantages of RCT have been much overrated within economics.

    Early Modern Women Philosophers and the History of Philosophy EILEEN O’NEILL It has now been more than a dozen years since the Eastern Division of the APA invited me to give an address on what was then a rather innovative topic: the published contributions of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century women to philosophy.1 In that address, I highlighted the work of some sixty early modern women. I then said to the audience, “Why have I presented this somewhat interesting, but nonetheless exhausting . overview of seventeenth- and eigh- teenth-century women philosophers? Quite simply, to overwhelm you with the presence of women in early modern philosophy. It is only in this way that the problem of women’s virtually complete absence in contemporary histories of philosophy becomes pressing, mind-boggling, possibly scandalous.” My presen- tation had attempted to indicate the quantity and scope of women’s published philosophical writing. It had also suggested that an acknowledgment of their contributions was evidenced by the representation of their work in the scholarly journals of the period and by the numerous editions and translations of their texts that continued to appear into the nineteenth century. But what about the status of these women in the histories of philosophy? Had they ever been well represented within the histories written before the twentieth century? In the second part of my address, I noted that in the seventeenth century Gilles Menages, Jean de La Forge, and Marguerite Buffet produced doxogra- phies of women philosophers, and that one of the most widely read histories of philosophy, that by Thomas Stanley, contained a discussion of twenty-four women philosophers of the ancient world.

    The 'Singular' Utopia in Margaret Cavendish's Blazing World In Hye Ha Singularity simultaneously intrigued, haggled, suppressed, and finally epitomized Margaret Cavendish's entire life. Through her strikingly indecorous costumes, similarly improper command of language, eagerness to participate in the public sphere, and audacious attempts to publish her own works in her lifetime, the Duchess of Newcastle craved for social recognition of her originality. Most of her attempts at self-fashioning, however, engendered manifold ridicules and foulmouthed criticisms." As a way to defend herself against such odium, Cavendish resorted to the class privilege bolstered by her marriage to William Cavendish and false modesty - a commonplace rhetoric that female writers adopted in proclaiming and protecting their authorship. Yet, what is 'singular' about Cavendish is that she created her own world within narratives; in so doing, I believe, she could gain a genuine sense of ownershiplauthorship. This unfathomable extent of Cavendish's anxiety and ambition is disclosed 1) John Evelyn's ballad depicting "cava1iere"-like Cavendish is frequently referred, for it conveyed the degree of bewilderment that her contemporaries felt toward her. (See Sara Heller Mendelson's "Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of New Castle," The Mental World of Stuart Women, 46) Pepys's journal entry of 26 April 1667 also registered his misogynistic antipathy toward this seemingly presumptuous lady, a threat to gender distinction. II, pp. 1066-9. Please cite the published version.] FEMALE Philosophers There is a rich and diverse tradition of women philosophers in the history of British thought. Scholars have only recently begun to acknowledge the true extent of this tradition. In the past, the few women thinkers who were recognized were seen as the followers or helpmeets of their more famous male peers. A few women were regarded as philosophers in their own right, but typically only in so far as their ideas conformed to accepted paradigms of philosophy. If the women’s texts did not fit these paradigms, then those texts tended to be examined in a piecemeal fashion or ignored altogether. More recently, however, there has been a shift in perspective in the historiography of women’s philosophy. Some scholars assert that if women’s writings do not fit our modern paradigms, then it is the paradigms that have to be abandoned or re-evaluated, not the texts. The study of women’s ideas enables us to see that British philosophy in earlier periods is much more varied and complex than modern philosophers tend to acknowledge. There is now an awareness that in early modern philosophy the lines between politics, morality, theology, metaphysics, and science were often blurred. Many women who would not pass as philosophers today were almost certainly regarded as philosophers in that time.

Initially viewed as a way of making women’s work more visible, the effort to account for women’s work has gradually evolved to in- clude all unpaid work by whomever it is performed (men, women, children). The evolution of this effort illustrates how the questions raised by feminists have a relevance transcending feminism and challenging basic tenets in conven- tional economic thinking. Ester Boserup, in her classic 1970 book, Woman’s role in economic devel- opment, pointed out that “the subsistence activities usually omitted in the statis- tics of production and income are largely women’s work” (Boserup, 1970, p. 163). She was a pioneer in emphasizing the time-consuming character of these activities which, in rural economies, include physically demanding tasks such as fetching wood and carrying water as well as food production and the “crude processing of basic foods”. Even earlier, Margaret Reid, in her 1934 book, Economics of household production, expressed concern about the exclusion of domestic production from national income accounts and designed a method to estimate the value of home- based work. Then, from the late 1960s, the international women’s movement prepared the ground for a new look at the estimation of women’s economic activities. The issue was then seen as symbolizing society’s undervaluation of women and of their contribution to social well-being.
