C. Quando a tradução (re)conta a História: análise textual e tradução comentada de interrogatórios da “Rosa Branca”. 406 f. Dissertação (Mestrado) – Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, 2015. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo produzir uma tradução comentada, do alemão para o português, de uma seleção de documentos emblemáticos da resistência alemã ao Nacional-Socialismo. O corpus constitui-se especificamente de registros escritos dos interrogatórios (em alemão: Verhörprotokolle, “protocolos de interrogatório”) conduzidos em fevereiro de 1943 pela Polícia Secreta Nazista com os irmãos Hans e Sophie Scholl. Ambos eram integrantes do grupo A Rosa Branca, formado sobretudo por estudantes da Universidade de Munique que se opuseram ao regime nacional-socialista através da produção e distribuição de panfletos, nos quais lançavam críticas incisivas ao regime e à postura apática da população alemã perante os crimes cometidos pelo Estado. Tendo em vista o objetivo geral do trabalho e a conjuntura histórica em que se insere o corpus, partiu-se na análise e tradução dos protocolos de uma base teórica interdisciplinar, pautada tanto em elementos da pesquisa historiográfica quanto em pressupostos dos Estudos Funcionais da Tradução – sobretudo no modelo de análise textual e tradução de Christiane Nord (1988, 2009) –, da Linguística Textual e da Análise do Discurso. Para a tradução comentada dos protocolos, produto final deste trabalho, previu-se desde o início uma função documental, a qual justifica diversas microdecisões tomadas ao longo do processo tradutório. Elas vão desde a opção por reproduzir a formatação original dos textos de partida em alemão até a busca por reconstituir seu pano de fundo histórico por meio de comentários e imagens, inseridos propositalmente na margem direita e não no rodapé ou no fim da tradução. Espera-se, assim, que os textos traduzidos possam ser consultados, lidos e analisados como documentos e testemunhos sobre a resistência alemã ao Nacional-Socialismo, tema ainda pouco divulgado e estudado no Brasil. When translation (re)tells History: text analysis and commented translation of interrogations of the “White Rose”. 406 f. Dissertação (Mestrado) – Faculdade de Filosofia, Letras e Ciências Humanas, Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, 2015. This study aims to produce a commented translation from German into Portuguese of a selection of iconic documents of the German resistance to the National Socialism. The corpus is specifically consisted of written records of the interrogations (in German: Verhörprotokolle, interrogation protocols) conducted in February 1943 by the Nazi Secret Police with the brothers Hans and Sophie Scholl. Both were members of the group The White Rose, mostly comprised of students from the University of Munich who opposed the National Socialist regime by producing and distributing pamphlets in which they released incisive criticism to the government and apathetic posture of the German population before the crimes committed by it. Bearing in mind the overall aim of the work and the historical context to which the corpus belongs, an interdisciplinary theoretical basis was used in the analysis and translation of the protocols, based both in the historical research elements and on suppositions of the Functional Translation Studies – especially in the model for translation-oriented text analysis by Christiane Nord (1988, 2009) –, Text Linguistics and Discourse Analysis. For the commented translation of the protocols, the end product of this research, a documentary function was envisaged from the beginning, which justifies different micro decisions taken throughout the translation process, ranging from the choice of reproducing the original formatting of the source texts in German to the search for reconstituting the historical background of the source texts by means of comments and images intentionally inserted on the right edge of the page, and not in footnotes or at the end of the translation. In this difficult time, Sophie Scholl, demonstrated moral courage by writing and distributing the White Rose Leaflets which brought attention to the persecution of Jews and helped inspire others to speak out against injustice. Sophie, like many teens of the 1930s, was recruited to the Hitler Youth. Initially, she supported the movement as many Germans viewed Hitler as Germany’s last chance to succeed. As time passed, her parents expressed a different belief, making it clear Hitler and the Nazis were leading Germany down an unrighteous path (Hornber 1). Sophie and her brother, Hans, discovered Hitler and the Nazis were murdering millions of innocent Jews. Soon after this discovery, Hans and Christoph Probst, began writing about the cruelty and violence many Jews experienced, hoping to help the Jewish people. After the first White Rose leaflet was published, Sophie joined in, co-writing the White Rose, and taking on the dangerous task of distributing leaflets. The purpose was clear in the first leaflet, “If everyone waits till someone else makes a start, the messengers of the avenging Nemesis will draw incessantly closer” (White Rose Leaflet 1).

April 2014 Im März 2014 Stiftung Archiv der Parteien und Massenorganisationen im Bundesarchiv - Jahresbericht 2013 Vorwort Im Jahr 2013 konnte die Stiftung ihr 20jähriges Bestehen feiern. Über die vielen Glückwünsche und die Anerkennung, die aus diesem Anlass geäußert wurde, ha- ben sich alle hier Tätigen sehr gefreut. Uns wurde erneut bewusst gemacht, dass auch nach gut zwei Jahrzehnten die Eigenheiten dieser Einrichtung und vor allem ihrer Bestände sie zu etwas Besonderem machen, das zwar wie ein normales Ar- chiv und eine normale Bibliothek aussieht, doch allein schon in dieser Kombinati- on, vor allem aber auf Grund der Entstehung ihrer Bestände etwas Eigenes dar- stellt. Den Gästen konnte die Broschüre mit dem Titel Einsichtnahme übergeben werden, in der Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter der Stiftung einen Überblick über Entwicklung und Bestände der Stiftung geben. Eine Einsichtnahme in die zuvor nur durch wenige ausgewählte Personen oder die Leitungen der Organisationen nutzbaren Bestände zu ermöglichen, war der Auftrag der Stiftung, den sie von Anfang an sehr ernst nahm. Zunächst standen für diese Aufgabe die Konsolidierung der Bestände und die Zusammenstellung al- ler vorhandenen Aufzeichnungen, die zur Erleichterung der Nutzung des Archiv- guts selbst in Frage kamen, im Zentrum der Arbeit. Dabei bildete sich ein Archiv heraus, das sich bereits drei Jahre nach der Zusammenführung in seiner 1996 er- schienenen Kurzübersicht über die Bestände mit einer klaren inneren Gliederung nach Provenienzen als eine neue Einheit präsentieren konnte. Dabei wurde erkennbar, wie sehr die Auswirkungen früherer Bearbeitungen die Bestände umgeformt haben.

The frst dissertation in chemistry was approved in 1902. In the following years, only one or two women were annually enrolled, while the number of male students of chemistry continuously fuctuated around 22. Whereas four women completed their doctorate in the frst year of WWI, six followed in 1917, and ten more in 1919. Strikingly, in that year the number of female students even exceeded that of male colleagues. Margarethe Furcht, the daughter of a Jewish stockbroker, was the frst female chemist with a doctoral degree certifcate in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Her paper “Über die Veresterung von Sulfosäuren…”, which she published in 1902 together with her academic supervisor Rudolf Wegscheider, was one of the frst scientifc chemical publications of women in Austria. However, of all female graduates, only a small number worked as chemists within the next two decades. After the occupation of Austria by German Troops in March 1938, seven of the Jewish women managed to emigrate, four were murdered in the Holocaust. Given the importance of this period within the landscape of European scientifc history, we here aim to provide the frst comprehensive overview of the history of women studying chemistry at the University of Vienna.

    University of Miami Law School University of Miami School of Law Institutional Repository Articles Faculty and Deans 2018 Fearless Speech Mary Anne Franks Follow this and additional works at: https://repository.law.miami.edu/fac_articles Part of the First Amendment Commons, Law and Race Commons, and the Law and Society Commons FEARLESS SPEECH Mary Anne Franks* ABSTRACT The American conception of free speech is primarily defined as the freedom to say whatever one wants, with little regard for the quality, context, or impact of the speech. Thus, American free speech doctrine is often characterized as neutral with regard to the speaker and the content of speech; in practice, however, it consistently privileges powerful over vulnerable speakers and harmful over critical speech. From Philadelphia to Skokie to Charlottesville, the First Amendment has been interpreted to protect speech by white men that silences and endangers women and minorities. As free speech doctrine and practice become increasingly concerned with private as well as state action, free speech becomes even more of a monopoly and monoculture dominated by the interests of white men. The impoverished and elitist conception of free speech that governs current American legal theory and practice undermines all three values the First Amendment is meant to protect: autonomy, truth, and democracy. This Article proposes that First Amendment theory and practice should be reoriented around ancient Greek concept of parrhesia, or fearless speech.     Widerstand in Hamburg 1933–1945 Die ersten Verbote politischer Organisationen, die Verfolgung ihrer Mitglieder und weitere Unterdrückungsmaßnahmen trafen ab März 1933 in erster Linie die Parteien und anderen Verbände der Arbeiterbewegung. Gleichzeitig wurde von diesen Verbänden, die zumeist in schärfster Gegnerschaft zum Nationalsozialismus standen, vielfältiger Widerstand gegen die NS-Diktatur organisiert. Auch aus christlicher Moti- vation wurde sich der NS-Diktatur widersetzt, wobei insbe- sondere der Widerstand der Zeugen Jehovas zu nennen ist. Mit Beginn des Zweiten Weltkrieges begann sich Widerstand neu und auf einer breiteren Basis zu formieren. Eine Reihe von Widerstandsgruppen bildete sich dabei weitgehend un- abhängig von den politischen Konstellationen aus der Zeit vor 1933. So gehörten der Gruppe um Helmuth Hübener oder dem Hamburger Zweig der „Weißen Rose“ junge Menschen an, die 1933 noch Kinder waren und in der NS-Zeit zur Schule gingen. Widerstand leisteten auch zahlreiche Frauen und Männer in den besetzten Ländern und Kriegsgefangene, Zwangsarbeite- rinnen und Zwangsarbeiter in Deutschland. Zum Widerstand im weitesten Sinne gehörte die Ablehnung nationalsozialisti- schen Gedankenguts, die Verweigerung der Mitgliedschaft in NS-Organisationen, die Vermittlung humanistischer Werte an junge Menschen oder die Aufrechterhaltung von Kontakten zu jüdischen Freundinnen und Freunden.     THE WHITE ROSE INTRODUCTION AND CONTEXT ‘Somebody, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don’t dare to express themselves as we did.’ Sophie Scholl at her trial. 1943. In a Munich court, brother and sister Hans and Sophie Scholl, with their best friend Christoph Probst, are tried for speaking out against the Nazi regime. As German teenagers in the 1930’s the Scholl siblings had supported Hitler and his rise to power. They had even been members of German youth organisations and, like many others, believed that Hitler was leading Germany into a glorious future. However, as World War II began and the reality of Hitler’s policies became apparent, Sophie and Hans Scholl started to act. Copies of a leaflet called The White Rose appeared at the University of Munich. This anonymous essay condemned the Nazi regime and encouraged ordinary Germans to rise up and resist the authority of their own leaders. Such open rebellion was unheard of. Over the next few months, five more leaflets followed. Seeing The White Rose movement begin to attract public support, the Gestapo redoubled their efforts to hunt down the ringleaders. 18 February 1943 saw Hans and Sophie arrested after leaving leaflets in the buildings of the Munich University. Christoph Probst was linked to the movement and also arrested. After four days of interrogation by the Gestapo, they were tried for treason, found guilty and executed on 22 February 1943. Hans was 24 years old, Sophie 21 and Christoph was 22.
